It's 1793 and the Reign of Terror is slicing through the elite of Paris - but not if the Scarlet Pimpernel has anything to do with it! With a very British pluck, and daring bravado, he rescues French aristocrats from Madame Guillotine's embrace. But who hides beneath the Pimpernel’s mask? And isn’t the Scarlet Pimpernel just a fictional character? At Highmoor House, in England, Peri plays lady of the manor while the Doctor tends to the strange wounds of her ‘husband’, Sir Percy Blakeney. As Peri prepares to host a lavish ball in Sir Percy’s name, French agent Citizen Donat, and a sinister alien force are uninvited guests, both intent on unmasking the Scarlet Pimpernel and putting an end to his heroic escapades, forever!

Two and a half years into a three-year research contract, George Almore (Theo James) is on the verge of a breakthrough. Stationed halfway up a snow-capped mountain near Kyoto at a secret facility codenamed ‘The Garden’, he has been working on a model that is a true human-equivalent android. His prototype is almost complete. But this most sensitive phase of his work is also the riskiest. Especially as George has an ulterior motive for his work that must be hidden at all costs: Being re-united with his dead wife, Jules (Stacy Martin).    ARCHIVE RELEASES ON DIGITAL DOWNLOAD 18th JANUARY.   To talk about this episode and any other episode you can visit the Bags of Action Facebook group here - Facebook Group . For the next three weeks, we are presenting some archive content in the leadup to our three-part Miniscope on the works of director Rachel Talalay.

Rachel has been a friend to us here at RFS, appearing no fewer than six times, and we thought it was worth re-releasing our interviews and commentaries with her over the years as a lead-in to our conversations about her work on Doctor Who.

This instalment features our first two interviews with Rachel. The first is Warren’s interview with her, which we originally released on Radio Free Skaro #445 in the runup to the Series 8 finale in 2014, as well as our second chat with Rachel from Radio Free Skaro #463, recorded in a very busy lobby at the LAX Marriott at Gallifrey One in February 2015.

Thanks for listening to these, and we hope you enjoy the first part of our Miniscope on director Rachel Talalay, covering “Dark Water” and “Death in Heaven”, on the next episode of Radio Free Skaro.

This week, we answer the most important questions about the latest leg of our flight — the Russell T Davies Era. What happened to Nerys during the Year of Hell? Which monsters would we most like to party with? Who is the best guest character, and why is it Ida Scott? And, finally, is this the best era in the show’s history?

    Notes and links

Thank you to Pete Lambert, Steven Alexander, Bob Gilbey, Joe Ford, Simon Hart and Nathan Bottomley for supplying us with questions to answer on Twitter, and to Colin Neal for his contribution to our final round of Snog Marry Avoid.

Nathan would like to clarify here that the Astrid he’s referring to is not Kylie Minogue’s Astrid Peth but Astrid Ferrier from The Enemy of the World, who seems to be a source of fascination for Patrick Troughton’s Doctor.

Here is Christopher Eccleston’s appearance on Blue Peter on 21 March 2005, just a couple of days before Series 1 was first broadcast.

You can listen to the Forest of the Dead commentary that Nathan mentions here: it features David Tennant, Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat. And you need to hear it.

Here’s El Sandifer’s piece on The Idiot’s Lantern, in which she briefly analyses the differences between Eccleston’s and Tennant’s performance styles.

Miranda Raison’s companion character in the Big Finish audios is called Constance Clarke, who is a Wren working at Bletchley Park during World War II.

Project: WHO? is a 2005 radio documentary about the process of bringing Doctor Who back to television in 2005, featuring all of the production crew and actors that we would grow to know and love over the next five years. It’s still available as an audiobook. (Audible US) (Audible UK) (Audible AU).

To celebrate the end of the production of RTD’s Doctor Who, the cast and crew shot a lovely video in which they lipsync to The Proclaimers’ “I would walk five hundred miles”. They’re all in it, and it’s absolutely adorable. (I still cry. I just checked.)

Joining us for this episode is Kenny Smith, editor of Big Finish's very own monthly magazine, Vortex, and co-host of the Power of 3 podcast.

We'll also take a look at what we were doing during the wilderness years, ie. the 90's, before Big Finish burst on to the scene in 2000 with brand, new, full cast Doctor Who adventures.

You say you want a revolution. Well, you know...THAT IT SHOULD NEVER INVOLVE DALEKS! Really, Daleks in your revolution is bad. But this week we sit down to discuss the New Year's Special Revolution of the Daleks! It's a mostly entertaining story with the return of some welcome faces, one face we'd really like to see punched, and two faces who leave at the end (but live!). For all we liked about this adventure, there were a few troubling aspects that left things feeling a little lopsided going into Season 13.
