We take a sidestep from Doctor Who this time and enter the world of The Tripods television series, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this month.

We'll be joined by Chris Jones, author of the forthcoming book "All For Nothing?", which will be released at a special Tripods fan event next week. The event will also feature appearances from all four principal cast members, together for the very first time since the show was filmed, as well as other cast and production crew.

We are also joined by Tripods superfan Will Hadcroft, better known to Doctor Who fans by his audio dramas The Resurrection Plant and Dark Contract.

To "cap" it off, we'll have a special focus on the sensational soundtrack for The Tripods, composed and arranged by Ken Freeman.

Pamela Salem is an actress who starred in memorable roles in classic Doctor Who stories The Robots of Death and Remembrance of the Daleks.

We kick off our Ian Marter retrospective with a look at his time at Oxford University. Thanks to back issues of St. Edmund Hall Magazine, we uncover new information that places Marter at Oxford three years earlier than is widely and incorrectly reported in other published sources. From our research, we found that Marter was at St. Edmund Hall, aka Teddy Hall, from 1963-1966 and was heavily involved with drama in the college's John Oldham Society and the Oxford's drama cuppers.

Before Oxford, Marter went to school at the Beckenham and Penge Grammar School in Greater London and went to Oxford on a scholarship to study English language and literature. Among other highlights, Marter directed a well received production of John Osbourne's Luther in 1964 during the Trinity Term of his freshman year at the Oxford Playhouse. He also acted in productions of Fire in Heaven, The Sport of My Mad Mother, and Anton Checkov's The Cherry Orchard. In his final year at St. Edmund Hall, Marter co-starred in Samuel Beckett's play, Waiting for Gadot and was in Richard Burton's production of Doctor Faustus, by Christopher Marlowe which was also released as a film in 1967, giving Marter his first screen credit. Marter was awarded a Class III degree from St. Edmund Hall, which may help explain why he never corrected the record about his time at Oxford.

After leaving Oxford in 1966, he landed an assistant stage manager job at the Bristol Old Vic and by the following year, he was acting once again. We briefly talk about his small role in the Vincent Price horror film, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, and his reoccurring role in ITV's Crown Court where he played a police constable and then barrister, Quentin Ingrams, QC. Finally, we discuss being cast as Lt. John Andrews in "Carnival of Monsters" and how Doctor Who may have been different if he landed the role of Capt. Mike Yates a few years earlier. The opening and closing music is "Sinfonietta: IV. Allegrteto," composed by Leoš Janáček and performed by the Pro Arte Orchestra, which was the opening theme for ITV's Crown Court. We recorded this episode on 12-13 August 2024.

Warren has returned from his European travails, and just in time as casting for The War Between the Land and the Sea (henceforth known as TWBTLATS) is announced to much fanfare, A Disney poobah nods approvingly at Doctor Who as an idea, Catherine Tate herself hosts the BBC Proms, and Blake’s 7 news takes the internet (well, us) by storm with an amazing box set on the way for the UK (and North America?). All this as a preamble for some of the greatest acting in British televisual history as we commentate on Part Three of Planet of the Spiders!

Welcome to an extra long episode of Doctor Who Literature, but one of the deepest and most rewarding ones we've ever produced.

The subject is the February 1966 Doctor Who episode The Massacre, a troubled production where the original author tried to disclaim credit, the video is lost and only a few publicity photos survived, and the surviving audio is hard to untangle as William Hartnell only appears in a small handful of scenes.

We have three guests this week to help unravel the story:

--Repeat DWLit guest Denise Sutton joins Jason for a specially-recorded live introduction in Central London.

--Repeat DWLit guest Ian Potter, a Black Archives writer, helps Jason try to unravel the troubled production (and troubled production team!) at the heart of the TV serial.

--The Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, an American Baptist minister and Doctor Who fan, whose surname ties into this story, helps us understand the historical and religious context of August 1572.

And although he doesn't appear in this episode, we could not have produced this week without James Cooray Smith, who ⁠literally wrote the book on The Massacre⁠.

The Doctor and River are on a collision course - but this time it might not be a match made in heaven. 4.2 Face of the Apocalypse by Lizzie Hopley After locking onto an unusual algorithm, the TARDIS lands in a hi-security Intergalactic Bank where the computerised system only recognises one face - River Song. The Doctor discovers River dismantling the main computer and immediately suspects her of something dodgy… But a case of stolen identity becomes far more serious as River’s face starts to appear throughout history and the Bank vaults start filling up with Temporal Prisoners. Is River the victim of a sting or a bored computer nerd? One thing’s for certain, the ‘glitch’ is no longer a glitch and is on its way to destroying all of spacetime, starting with Prisoner Number One. 4.3 Archipelago by Tim Foley River Song has one last request. If the Doctor undertakes a dangerous journey with her on the planet Fortuna, she’ll never bother him again. But this is no ordinary voyage. As the storms batter their tiny vessel, the travellers are confronted with some brutal home truths. There is a captain in search of a husband. There is a ship in need of a light. And there are lovers lost in the maelstrom who will always be islands apart...
