DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 035 - Stage Fright
Diddly Dum PodcastHayden and Matt’s recent visit to the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular set them pondering as to whether Doctor Who works in a stage format. Therefore, in this week’s podcast, the Four Faces of Delusion look at the history of Doctor Who on stage – Curse of the Daleks, Seven Keys to Doomsday, The Ultimate Adventure, The Trial of Davros and Doctor Who Live: The Monsters are Coming.
Along the way we see C3PO and Princess Leia go toe to toe with Nick Briggs, Murray Gold “accidentally” bumps into Hayden and insists on a selfie with the noted podcaster, we learn of the Satanic message hidden within the Series 8 music when played backwards, Matt reveals his secret for getting Doctor Who Proms tickets, we explore the links between Peter Miles and Peter Gabriel and Doc explains the Rule of Seven in TV sci-fi. Arm yourself for future pub quizzes as we work out which was the first ever scene in which a Doctor kisses a companion – and it isn’t what you might think (Benton doesn’t count as a companion).

A Really, Really Good Length
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastAfter acquiring a mysterious treasure map from a German Expressionist filmmaker, Richard goes off to discover a fabulous treasure hidden deep in the bowels of a space mall, while Brendan and Nathan stay behind pouring milkshakes on each other. It’s Dragonfire.
Well, that’s democracy for you
You now have less than a week to vote for a Peter Davison story to be the subject of yet another FTE commentary podcast; we’ll be announcing the result at the end of our Tom Baker commentary episode next week.
To cast your vote, just visit the shownotes for Episode 116.
Buy the story!
Dragonfire was released on DVD in 2012. It was released on its own in the US (Amazon US), of course, but in Australia and the UK, it was released as part of the Ace Adventures box set, along with The Happiness Patrol, for some reason (Amazon UK).
Notes and links
Tony Osoba plays Kracauer, one of Kane’s followers. This is the second of three Doctor Who appearances: he was previously a Movellan in Destiny of the Daleks, and will go on to play an astronaut in Kill the Moon. He was also in Charles Chilton’s Space Force 2, a BBC science fiction radio series which served as a sequel to Chilton’s Journey into Space. He also appeared in Porridge, starring Ronnie Barker, in which he played a black Scotsman, which was apparently a hilarious thing in the 1970s.
Australia’s answer to Martha Stewart (without the criminal record) was called Tonia Todman, and who expected her to turn up in this episode? She’s still with us, apparently, and seems to have outlived her fame, such as it was.
Big Finish have staged a reunion between the Seventh Doctor, Mel and Ace in A Life of Crime, Fiesta of the Damned and Maker of Demons.
Coincidentally, many of this story’s characters share names with famous figures in the history of film criticism, including Pudovkin, Kracauer, Belazs (nearly) and Eisenstein.
The guard’s line about “the semiotic thickness of a performed text”, which we are all terribly fond of, is a direct quote from Doctor Who: The Unfolding Text, which was an early attempt at academic criticism of Doctor Who.
Nathan mentions a version of the Sylvester McCoy title sequence created in 2016 by Cloister Productions using modern CGI in less than 24 hours.
Dominic Glynn did a full stereo remix of his version of the Doctor Who theme for The Trial of a Time Lord box set in 2008.
Picks of the week
Brendan
Brendan recommends a Big Finish audio starring Sylvester McCoy and Bonnie Langford: Flip Flop, which consists of two discs that can be played in either order. Big Finish calls it “a unique innovation in storytelling”, which is sweet of them.
Nathan
Nathan recommends getting a subscription to Audible (US) (UK) (AU), where you can buy audiobook versions of many of the Doctor Who Target novelisations, particularly Delta and the Bannermen read by Bonnie Langford.
Richard
Richard goes all highbrow on us this week, recommending the films of Japanese screenwriter and director Akira Kurosawa, including Ran (1985), Yojimbo (1961), and The Hidden Fortress (1958.
He also recommends the films of Josef von Sternberg, particularly those starring William Hartnell–lookalike Marlene Dietrich, including The Scarlet Empress (1934), Morocco (1930) and Shanghai Express (1932).
Follow us!
Brendan is on Twitter as @brandybongos, Nathan is @nathanbottomley, Todd is @toddbeilby and Richard is @RichardLStone. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam, and the logo was designed by Anthony Wells. You can follow the podcast on Twitter at @FTEpodcast. And more surprising and completely reliable information about the show can be found at @FTEwhofacts.
Brendan recounts his experiences reading his way through the Doctor Who novels on his blog, The Doctor Who Reader.
We’re also on Facebook, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on iTunes, or we’ll lounge around in the emergency services tea room ignoring your increasingly urgent messages about that ice jam in the upper docking bay.
Bondfinger
Over on Bondfinger, we’re halfway through our flight through the Pierce Brosnan era, with commentaries on GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies. Fans of things much better than those films will enjoy our commentaries on the Timothy Dalton films. Or will they?
We also have plenty of Rodgecasts online, and there are other Bonds available, as well.

Episode 135: When Sydney Met Verity
The TARDIS TavernThe 50th anniversary of Doctor Who brought us a literal trifecta for the fans on the big as well as the small screens. There was, obviously, "The Day of The Doctor", Peter Davison's The Fiveish Doctors, and the BBC docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time.
For those of you that haven't been listening to this podcast for the last year and a half, we both think An Adventure in Space and Time is pretty much required viewing for anyone with a pulse, let alone anyone who has the slightest bit of interest in Doctor Who. So please listen in as we talk about William Hartnell, Verity Lambert, Sydney Newman, and the genesis of the show we've dedicated so much time to.

Big Blue Box Podcast - Episode 44
The Doctor Who Big Blue Box PodcastBonjour Who fans. It’s been a fairly slow week for news but fear not, we’re reviewing potentially one of the best classic Who stories this week. Let’s go!
The News
Doctor Who is to appear in the new LEGO Dimensions game. We’re super excited about this as it feels like Doctor Who should have been a part of LEGO for years now. The game due to launch in September this year and features physical LEGO toys which are then placed onto a pad which “magically” places them into the game.
The BEEB has gone all mysterious on us. They posted a short news snippet regarding the read through for episode 10 of the new series but have blurred out the title and the writers name? The post also includes this cryptic line “We'll have more big news for you soon, both about the ongoing production of the new series and the broader world of Doctor Who. As the Doctor himself might say, it's a roller coaster, isn't it?”. Hmmmm.
Big news to finish off with! As though the convention God’s were listening to our rant about how the stars of Doctor Who don’t attend many UK conventions we’re now going to get an entire weekend convention this November. Yes, the Doctor Who Festival starts Friday 13th November until Sunday 15th and will feature Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat among others. There will also be behind the scenes production talks, cosplay showcase, meet the writers, a drama school and much more. Head over to The Doctor Who Festival site for more information and tickets go on sale Friday 5th June at 10am. We’ll see you there!
“City of Death” Review
Classic Who goes international for City of Death with the romantic city of Paris as a backdrop to this alien story. It has it all – crashed spaceships, funny one liners, reversed polarity and sinister aliens. However, does it leave us with a sweet taste of wine and grapes or is it like a bowl of cooked frogs?
This week’s trivia question
Last episode we asked you – Who was the only Doctor since its first appearance to never use the Sonic Screwdriver? The answer is Colin Baker (although he did use a Sonic Lance).
This week’s question is – What were the very first words written in history? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!
Great to have you with us again this and thank you for your always interesting and amusing thoughts on our review episode. Have an awesome week and until next time – Allons-y!

095: The Stones of Blood
The Krynoid Podcast"It's getting rather exciting, isn't it?"
Well mileage may vary and opinions certainly differ a wee bit between your intrepid hosts on this one.

For it is The Stones of Blood, a tale of vampiric slabs, a reclusive mistress-villain with a morbid fear of lemon sherbets and the latest mismatched cop duo - Android and Wirrn.
The Doctor wears a barrister's wig, Romana sports a chav cap and Vivien Fay shows off her deep silver tan. Professor Rumford forgets her words and her bra but remembers her truncheon, and K9 spills his guts while being goosed by a jack plug.
The local druids summon a wrinkly comedy star, a camping couple suffer post-coital depression, and two clouds of bling argue the toss while the Doctor doesn't appear to give one.
So did the story stir the blood of Jim and Martin or leave them stony faced?
Listen to find out.
