Episode 44 - The Android Invasion (with Ross Aitken + excerpt from a mystery guest)
Doctor Who LiteratureThere comes a time in every Doctor Who podcast's life -- and I'm sure I'll have plenty of them -- where the episode under discussion just isn't that good. This is one of those weeks, but it's a tribute to Doctor Who in general that it took 44 weeks' worth of books to get to this point.
Jason opens up with several anecdotes meant to delay the inevitable. Talking about dorm room decorations, Brooklyn geography, Winona Ryder, off-Broadway musicals, and knitting.
A mystery guest speaks to us, via an excerpt from a forthcoming Doctor Who Literature episode, about "The Android Invasion" on TV. Listen on to find out who!
Ross Aitken (@traitken) from Gallifrey's Most Wanted (@GallifreysMWPod) joins Jason this week for an all-encompassing and unpredictable discussion about the entirety of Doctor Who -- we literally chat about 1963 and 2022 and most stops in between -- while taking a few minutes to scowl at the TV episode and book in question this week.
Jason then reads a more sarcastic than usual breakdown of the Terrance Dicks novelization -- but Terrance himself has some thoughts on this story, it seems, and they're not too dissimilar to Jason's and Ross's.

Ghost Reasons
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, Dougray Scott, Jessica Raine and two scary skeleton creatures are all so unspeakably horny that all Nathan, Corey, Si and Pete can do is Hide.
Notes and links
Jessica Raine, who plays Emma in Hide will go on to play Doctor Who’s first producer Verity Lambert in An Adventure in Space and Time, a drama about the origins of Doctor Who which is released a few months after this episode. But more about that later, perhaps. (Spoilers!)
Sound Effects No. 13: Death & Horror was an album produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1977 and used continuously in TV and stage productions ever since. Mary Whitehouse complained vociferously about its release, because of course she did.
Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014) also features time-travelling astronauts with a ghostly influence on the past. It’s hard to imagine that it makes that much more sense than Hide though, isn’t it?
I considered writing about the racist lyrics of Cole Porter’s Let’s Do It, but after a second’s reflection, I’ve decided to just let you Google them for yourself. But really, don’t.
The Stone Tape (1972) was a made-for-TV movie written by Quatermass’s Nigel Kneale and featuring Jane Asher and Doctor Who’s very own Ian Cuthbertson. Like Hide, it features researchers spending the night in a house haunted by a spectral woman, but Neil Cross would like to make it very clear that for copyright purposes, it is in every way a legally distinct entity from Hide.
El Sandifer is particularly scathing in her assessment of Nigel Kneale in her essay on (among other things) ITV’s 1978 TV movie version of Quatermass.
And finally, Whatever Happened to Susan Foreman? was an episode of a comedy radio programme called Whatever Happened To…?, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 1994 — featuring Jane Asher (again) as Susan Foreman. It was released as a special feature on the DVD of The Dalek Invasion of Earth.
Actually, there is one more thing. The story from The Sarah Jane Adventures that we talk about in the tag is called Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?. It’s amazing. Go and watch it immediately.

Slipback
The Doctor Who ShowIt's the end of September and, as promised last episode, Rob and Dave have read the Target novelisation of Eric Saward's 1985 Doctor Who radio play, Slipback.
In this episode they run through the novel, blow-by-blow, then have a discussion about it. Naturally, they also discuss the radio play too, for some handy comparison.
Before then, they discuss some interesting news from the past month, some short topics and, at the end of the show, talk about some non-Doctor Who content they've consumed of late. A couple of listener emails round out the episode.
Hope you enjoy the show! Contact us anytime, hello@theDWshow.net

Podcastica Episode 263: Resurrection of the Daleks OR And then More Murdering
PodcasticaLONDON 1984! Apparently a bleak hellscape in which the Daleks have a team of mercenary human clones (with helmets we're surprised didn't become a marketing opportunity) working to unearth Davros while also infiltrating various areas of human culture. See, there's a lot happening in Resurrection of the Daleks, but instead of anything getting resurrected, lots (and lots) of characters get gunned down...often for no reason. This is an unusual Doctor Who story if only for that fact, but it's one we'd have to review eventually!

Radio Free Skaro #870 - Doctor Who Title Generator
Radio Free SkaroAfter months of waiting, drumming our fingers, and alternating between hype and apathy, or hype-athy if you will, we finally have a title for Jodie Whittaker’s final story as the Thirteenth Doctor, and that title is…The Power of the Doctor. Not much to go on, but that won’t stop the Three Who Rule from mightily cogitating based on those five words, as well as talking about the new Flux soundtrack, Daleks in comic strip form, more Big Finish stuff, and as always, The Timelash!

Episode 43 - Death to the Daleks (with Paul Simpson)
Doctor Who LiteratureThis week in September 2022 saw the announcement of the title of the next Doctor Who episode ("The Power of the Doctor"), although not the release date. This week also saw "Cobra Kai" Season 5 drop on Netflix, though that's of slightly less importance to fandom.
My guest this week is Paul Simpson (@scifibulletin), who has several terrific stories to tell about the early years of the Target Books publishing office and some amazing details about the early writers (Malcolm Hulke and his graph paper!). Paul is currently managing editor of Sci-Fi Bulletin.
Release information and a link to "Doctor Who and the Daleks: The Illustrated Edition" can be found here.
Stick around for the second half of the program, when Jason discusses the "Death to the Daleks" novelization -- a perfect example of how Terrance adds value and insight and depth to the TV serial even in a very short book. There's lots to break down today.
Please e-mail the pod at DrWhoLiterature@gmail.com.

Fluffy Bums
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, we’re joined aboard a Soviet submarine by Mark McManus, Jack Shanahan and a low-effort lizard alien, who proceeds to run around the boat in the nude murdering members of the crew. But we’re all too interested in Jenna Coleman, David Warner, some guys from Game of Thrones and a discarded fibreglass suit of armour to notice.
Notes and links
The tale of Steven Berkoff’s wilful destruction of the climactic scenes of The Power of Three is told in its entirety in Episode 234: Stop Watching a Kids’ Show.
Those of you lucky enough not to remember 1983 might need to be told about The Hunt for Red October (1990), a film set on board a Russian submarine captained by a typically Scottish-sounding Sean Connery. Mark Gatiss is definitely looking over his shoulder at that film while he’s writing this episode.
Nathan refers to the most recent episode of Bondfinger, where we comment on am episode of The Saint which contains scenes of French people speaking to one another in English with a French accent. (Which is just the sort of thing they probably do all the time just to prank us.)
Here’s El Sandifer’s brutal assessment of the Ice Warriors: “…if we’re being honest, the fact that they are literally green reptile monsters from Mars has to mark the point where the show has simply given up on monsters and concluded that the audience will accept anything.”
Spencer Wilding played Skaldak in this story and was the Wooden King in The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe and the Minotaur in The God Complex. He also played Darth Vader in Rogue One. Fans of hefty lads will enjoy his Instagram. I certainly did.

Primary Sources – February 1986
The Doctor Who ShowWelcome to the 24th and, for now, FINAL episode of the podcast we’ve been dropping on the feed every month in between our regular monthly shows.
In today’s podcast, Rob sits down with his Doctor Who Show co-host, Dave, to discuss the letters from both Doctor Who Magazine from February of 1986 and some classic issues of the Sonic Screwdriver fanzine from the Doctor Who Club of Victoria.
Yes folks, this is a double episode to end the run on (for now). This is Doctor Who without a safety net. The conversations could go anywhere the guest wants them to go.
This is Primary Sources!
