A Proud Bear Holding a Bag of Chips Getting to Be Celia Imrie
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastIt’s 2013 and Doctor Who is back for its anniversary season — with a new companion, a new outfit for the Doctor, and a lethal and potentially world-ending new threat from the Intenet, more than a decade before the invention of Web3. Keep a close eye on your apes, everyone: it’s The Bells of Saint John.
Notes and links
Celia Imrie is known and loved by all of us here at FTE from her role in Absolutely Fabulous as Jennifer Saunders’s rival in PR, Claudia Bing from Bing, Bing, Bing & Bing. Here’s an in-depth interview with her, about her career both as an actress and a writer, which published in The Scotsman in 2016.
Danny Hargreaves was Doctor Who’s extremely photogenic special effects supervisor, who was always a very welcome addition to any episode of Doctor Who Confidential.
And, finally, it’s time that we sat down and had a serious, proper talk about Doctor Who production codes. From the very beginning of the show in 1963, every story was referred to internally by its production code, which was initially a single capital letter from A to Z, then a double letter (AA to ZZ), then a triple letter (AAA to ZZZ) and then finally an initial number followed by a letter (4A to 4Z and so on). And so An Unearthly Child was A and Ghost Light was 7Q. Back in the day, certain of us knew the production codes for every story — sadly, in these hectic modern times, we have better things to do. You can find out all about the ins and outs of production codes here.

Opening music is "Technicolour Dreams" by Status Quo. Closing music is a song by Mihâly Vig, from Bela Tarr's film "A Torinoi Lo" (The Turin Horse). We recorded this episode on 21 August 2022.

Episode 40 - Horror of Fang Rock (with Steve Alexander)
Doctor Who LiteratureJason is on vacation this week, so here is a pre-recorded episode. We did not discuss the book cover, but this is one of the all-time great Target covers, so take an extra minute to drink that in. Jeff Cummins, everyone. Such a haunting, moody painting.
Jason is joined this week by Steve Alexander (@stealexanderuk), a very familiar voice to listeners of the Trap One and the "Hamster with a Blunt Penknife" podcasts. Steve brings terrific intensity as we discuss not only "Horror of Fang Rock", both TV episode and novelization -- but also the long line of Target novelization audiobook adaptations. Steve brings with him a Top Ten list of audiobooks and his revelation of the top spot is not to be missed.
Jason then reviews the novelization, in terms so glowing that the review itself could serve as a lighthouse.
Also discussed this week is the fascinating 2018 Scottish film The Vanishing, based on the original Flannan Isle Lighthouse mystery.
And don't forget to read the Wilfrid Gibson poem based on the same subject. Please e-mail the pod at DrWhoLiterature@gmail.com.

3.27 Army of Death
Doctor Who - Pieces of EighthOUR look at the Mary Shelley adventures with the Eighth Doctor comes to a close in this episode, as we go behind the scenes on Army of Death.
We have a rare podcast appearance from script editor Alan Barnes, who tells us how the trilogy came to be, as well as Mary's original encounter with the Doctor in A Company of Friends, we meet actor Mitch Benn who plays several stories in the tale, as well as sound designer/musician Kelly Ellis from Fool Circle Productions, who shares his experiences of bringing the adventure to life.
It's the penultimate episode in this series - a 13 part run that's become 28! It's just least Tom Baker's last season on TV, except neither Kenny nor Becca are going to regenerate into Peter Davison next week. Promise!
