Episode 35: Happy Endings
The Doctor Who Book Club PodcastFirst of all, we profusely apologize for the delay in this month’s release, but what with family visiting at the holidays, influenza, and whatnot we really couldn’t hammer this one out by the end of November. This is ironic, because it may be our shortest episode ever.
This time around we discuss Paul Cornell’s Happy Endings, the celebratory 50th Virgin New Adventure perhaps also known as “The One in Which Benny Gets Married and Every Major Character from Every New Adventure is Invited to the Wedding”.
From the back cover:
‘Doctor, this is my fiancé. Please don’t kill him.’
You are cordially invited to the wedding of Mr Jason Kane and Professor Bernice S. Summerfield, to be held in the village of Cheldon Bonniface in the year 2010.
If everything works out, that is. Between rows, fights and pre-emptive divorce proceedings, there may not be a wedding at all. Especially if there really is someone who wants to prevent it happening.
Everybody’s coming: from Ice Warriors to UNIT veterans, a flirtatious Ace to a suspicious Hamlet Macbeth – and a very confused trio of Isley Brothers. The Doctor has to organize a buffet, Roz has a mystery to solve, and Chris has a girlfriend who used to be the Timewyrm.
Paul Cornell, of course, is known for introducing Benny Summerfield in Love and War and has also written Human Nature, for which he penned the teleplay for the television series.
Sit back, pour yourself a glass of champagne, and listen in as we review Happy Endings.
Feel free to email us at dwbcpodcast@gmail.com, follow the podcast on Twitter via @dwbcpodcast, Erik via @sjcaustenite, and Sean via @tardistavern. Also, a very big THANK YOU to those of you who approached us at L.I. Who and DFW Whofest!

Scrolls: World Fantasy Con Special
Geek SyndicateIf you have an abiding love for Fantasy, SF and Horror, you could do far worse than get yourself to one of the book conventions that crop up around the country on a regular basis. In 2013 the World Fantasy Con returned to our fair shores after a long absence, bringing with it a raft of international authors, book launches, intimate Q&As, large-scale panels and literary awards. Folk from all areas of the publishing industry were brought together with fans to celebrate and promote the ongoing explosion of imaginative fiction into mainstream life. The Scrolls team was sadly unable to attend this event en mass but we wererepresented by Phil Ambler, who's here to tell Dion all about it. Joining us are a group of authors and bloggers to share their experiences, have a laugh and digress into some disturbing areas. They are:Karen Davies, a.k.a KTScribbles author of The Red Knight, reviewer at SF Crowsnest and blogger.Paul Holmes a.k.a PabloCheesecake, blogger and reviewer at The Eloquent PageStephen Aryan, a.k.a SteveAryan very-nearly-published author, podcaster, bloggerand probably a bloomin' rocket scientist too.In the episode we chew over first impressions; talk personal highlights, general vibes and unfortunate issues; then give out some prime tips for people who are new to the convention scene. Along the way we hear of the perils of looking out of a bedroom window, discover an academic use for genitalia, get utterly lost in a toilet, and (finally!) learn where they keep all the free booze.Want to track down that elusive best seller from Fox Spirit? Head over to their home-page.Wish you could watch John Llewellyn Probert's ghost stories, as recorded at the con? Here you go!Last but not least, if the episode has whetted your appetite for future cons, here are the links to Bristol Con, Nine Worlds and the Fantasy Con in York.We hope to see some of you there in 2014!Until then, keep reading.

Waffle On PodcastWaffle On about Doctor Who and the 50th Celebration
Hello and welcome to this mini episode of Waffle On chatting away about Doctor Who and the big old 50th celebration. A podKast with a Kerb Krawl
Kasterborous PodkastChristian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
It’s probably fair to say that this has been one of the podKast (with a “K”)’s oddest weeks.
Disrupted by deadlines on the original recording date of Monday, Christian was unable to take part. “No problem,” thought he, “my colleagues James and Brian are more than able to cope with the technicalities of recording a Skype call and uploading it to Google Drive.”
That, listener, was his first mistake.
So we opted to record live on Thursday evening instead, using Google Hangouts. Although a podKast was “recorded” on Monday, it wasn’t actually recorded, something that James and Brian were naturally somewhat unhappy about. So this second attempt was a way for them to try and recall the best bits with Christian also offering his own thoughts and experiences of the week of Doctor Who.
Which brings us to the other odd moment, the one that can only be accurately related by you clicking play and watching or listening to this week’s podKast, where we learn that mild-mannered Kasterborous editor Christian Cawley was mistaken for someone “looking for a good time” outside the BBC Tees building in Middlesbrough.
(Thanks to DocWhom for inspiration with this week’s title and image…)

Listen to the PodKast
There are several ways to listen. In addition to the usual player above, we're pleased to announce that you can also stream the podKast using Stitcher, an award-winning, free mobile app available for Android and iPhone/iPad. This pretty much means that you can listen to us anywhere without downloading - pretty neat, we think you'll agree! (Note that it can take a few hours after a new podKast is published to "catch up".)
What’s more, you can now listen and subscribe to the podKast via our Audioboo channel! Head to http://audioboo.fm/channel/doctorwhopodkast and click play to start listening. You can also comment and record your own boos in response to our discussions!
Meanwhile you can use the player below to listen through Audioboo:
You haven't clicked play yet?! What are you waiting for? As well as our new Stitcher and Audioboo presence you can also use one of these amazingly convenient ways to download and enjoy this week's podKast.
- Use the player in the top right of the Kasterborous home page, or visit the podKast menu link.
- Listen with the "pop out" player above, which also allows you to download the podKast to your computer.
- You can also take advantage of the RSS feed to subscribe to the podKast for your media player, and even find us on iTunes!
Incidentally, if you are listening on iTunes, please take the time to leave a rating and review and help us to bring in new listeners to the podKast!

Doctor WhoochIn which there is also shenanigans and chicanery.
On this week's show, Brandon and Danica talk about things happening NOW! For the first time ever! They talk about "The Day of the Doctor" (which they saw live in theatre with a bunch of their friends), "The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot", and "An Adventure In Space And Time" - which we all delightful in their own way. They also get super tired, because they did all of that in one day, and rode a horse-and-cart. It was awesome.
