Episode 50 - The War Games (with Ross Aitken, and many special guests)
Doctor Who Literature50 episodes of Doctor Who Literature, and this episode releases of the first anniversary of my original trailer for the then-forthcoming podcast, November 6. It's been a fun and rewarding year, we've read some great books and interviewed some great guests. Thanks to all of you who have been along for all or part of this journey.
"The War Games" is surely one of Doctor Who's best -- and most groundbreaking -- TV serials. The novelization by Malcolm Hulke has not quite received perhaps quite so much love, but we try to remedy that over the course of this episode.
Joining Jason this week is Ross from Gallifrey's Most Wanted Podcast as well as Stop! Let's Team Up. We discuss War Games, Jack Kirby, and Eli Wallach; and reflect on some of the badly-dated language used in the 1970s to denote race in the Target novelizations.
Many other special guests stop by this week to remember "The War Games" (TV and book) and to wish the podcast a happy 50th episode.
Read more about Rudolph Walker, who had a too-small part in Episodes Four and Five of "The War Games".
Pete Seeger's rousing rendition of "John Brown's Body", a fight song for the Union Army in the American Civil War, as referenced in the novelization.
Eli Wallach's excellent autobiography was published in 2005. The actor passed away a few years later at age 99.
"Doctor Who and the War Games" features cover art by John Geary.
Doctor Who Literature is now a member of the Direction Point Doctor Who podcast network.

Interview - Doctor Who Am I
The Doctor Who ShowDoctor Who Am I is described by IMDb as a documentary where, "an infamous Doctor Who screenwriter is reluctantly dragged back into the American Whoniverse, in this funny and moving documentary about finding family in the unlikeliest of places." It launched in the UK in late October and will be available on home media in some territories later this very month.
But did you know that, on the podcast which gave birth to the Doctor Who Show - Who Wars - we actually interviewed that screenwriter (Matthew Jacobs)? And that he spoke at length about the Doctor Who Am I project?
Yes, on August 9, 2015 we ran a 40m interview with Matthew, touching on Doctor Who Am I, The Emperor's New Groove, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Star Wars, and more. All conducted by Kate - @kamiduu.
What we have made here is an edit of that interview, basically cutting more than 50% out (so if you want to hear him talk Disney, Young Indy, George Lucas, etc, you will need to seek out the original episode), and we're left with a very Doctor Who and Doctor Who Am I oriented chat.
Seven years have gone by since this interview was conducted, but we think you'll find the chat relevant and a great preamble to seeing the doco!

4.12 Jacobean Tragedy (and Triumph)
Doctor Who - Pieces of EighthIT'S ANOTHER first for Pieces of Eighth - normally we don't do review episodes, but on this occasion we've broken our rule.
Today, we feature Kenny's roadtrip to Edinburgh with his Power of 3 co-host David Steel, as they travelled to watch Doctor Who Am I on the big screen, the documentary charting Matthew Jacobs' journey with fandom, from being (as he perceived it) an unwanted embarrassment after the TV Movie, to fully embracing the fact that people like - and indeed love - his work.
It's a moving film, directed by Vanessa Yuille, and Kenny and Dave give their thoughts en route to the cinema in the car, in the cinema beforehand, and give their instant reaction on the streets of the Scottish capital.
Becca's gutted not to have seen the film - yet - but we're also joined by seven listeners who share their thoughts on the film too.

352: Really Say Goodbye (The Power of the Doctor)
Trust Your DoctorThis week we return to the podcast that kicked off everything. It’s the moment that started everything, Trust Your Doctor, coming back for its triumphant…. death. It’s the beginning of the end but the moment has been prepared for, but only as far as we usually prepare on Decorative Vegetable podcasts. It’s The Power of the Doctor, written by Chris Chibnall and aired on October 23, 2022
Show-notes:
0:54 The Monoids appeared in The Ark.
1:58: We watched classic sci-horror series Children of the Stones on Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast, a classic sci-fi podcast that you should check out if you’re looking for a classic sci-fi podcast, like classic sci-fi, and/or like podcasts.
2:05: Check out fellow Doctor Who podcasts Krynoid Podcast and Flight Through Entirety. You’ll be glad you did.
6:25: If this is your first time hearing that Doctor Who is going to be a coproduction with Disney+, then I’m so sorry.
29:17: The Cyberium was introduced in The Haunting of Villa Diotati. The bulk of our show-notes on this show are links to the TARDIS wiki lol.
37:00: The King’s Man didn’t feature Ra Ra Rasputin… I was very sad.
49:52: Tom Baker is 88 years old. You can see him looking quite frail in this interview from a year ago.
52:23: I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it doesn’t even matter.
1:10:40: We actually did go back and rewatch this 1 minute segment and The Master really did just control the Qurunx, somehow.
1:15:0: Check out this picture for yourself… at the TARDIS wiki.
1:48:36: His name was Tosin Cole, and we should be ashamed for forgetting. (editor’s note: I mean I looked it up like one minute after this…)

Podcastica Episode 265: The Power of The Doctor OR When Does Ten Equal Fourteen?
PodcasticaWell, friends, we've all had a week to rewatch and process our feelings about The Power of The Doctor (as well as all the news that dropped right after that aired)! This time we're going to spend quite a bit looking at this adventure, what it means to us, how well it caps off the Chibnall era & Jodie's run, and also talk a bit about what the future holds (and also gripe a little about how long it'll be before we have some new Doctor Who on the telly again).

Everyone’s So Damn Special
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastMatt Smith’s last full season as the Doctor is a game of two halves — two costumes, two console rooms, two title sequences (or six, whatever) and two sets of companions over two consecutive years. And we’re in two minds about it. Welcome to the Series 7 retrospective.

Thank you to all the lovely people who sent us questions, particularly Rod Who (@who_rod), Frazer Gregory (@FelixFrazer), Joe Ford (@docoho) Steven Alexander (@stealalexanderuk), Bob Gilbey (@bobgilbey), Erik Stadnik (@sjcAustenite), Nathan Bottomley (@nathanbottomley) and Richard Stone (@RichardLStone).
Downtime (1995) was an officially licensed Doctor Who fan film written by Marc Platt (Ghost Light) and featuring Nick Courtney, Lis Sladen, Deborah Watling and various other Doctor Who guest stars. Plus some Yeti.
Here’s Brendan standing alongside a portrait of what seems to be his Spanish monk great-great-great-great-great-great-(etc.)-grandfather in the National Art Museum of Catalonia.
John and Gillian were child companions of the First and Second Doctors in many, many Doctor Who comics. They don’t get space syphilis, but evil fictional versions of them do turn up in the Virgin New Adventure Conundrum.
Alex Kingston has continued to play River Song for Big Finish opposite a range of different Doctors and at least one Master in The Diary of River Song.
And last of all, in 2012, the BBC released a sort of animated version of an unfilmed scene written by Chris Chibnall, which would have seen the Doctor tell Brian Williams about the fate of his son and daughter-in-law. It’s called PS.

Episode 49 - Image of the Fendahl (with David Barsky)
Doctor Who LiteratureAnd, incidentally, a Happy Halloween, to all of you at home.
Welcome to the first episode of Doctor Who Literature made after the airing of "The Power of the Doctor", the BBC centenary episode, and the last hurrah for Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall. I appeared on Trap One earlier this week to discuss the episode. And be sure to check out DWLit vets Conrad, Mark, and Pete, discussing the Disney/Doctor Who news.
Joining Jason this week to break down "Image of the Fendahl" is friend of the podcast and TV producer David Barsky, who brings us news on his latest series, braves a round of "20 Questions", talks cross-country travel, and discusses just what merit might be found in this slender novelization. Plus, a surprising abundance of jokes about novelization author Terrance Dicks' surname.
This is your last week to contribute any audio recollections in advance of next week's special Episode 50, covering "The War Games" and its novelization."Doctor Who and the Image of the Fendahl" features cover art by John Geary.

Actors who have played the Doctor in other roles
The Doctor Who ShowWhat a week! It started with us doing a hot take episode on the final Jodie Whittaker story, The Power of the Doctor, and we thought this episode following it would be a bit fluffy and frothy and very relaxed.
Nek minnit... we get the news that Disney+ has secured the worldwide rights to screen Doctor Who outside of the UK, starting in 2023. International fandom blew up, particularly here in Australia. Dave was called to appear on a couple of mainstream radio shows to talk about it. We play one at the end of the ep!
So while this episode is about actors who have played the Doctor in other roles, we also have a lot of discussion on both the trailer for the three upcoming specials, and the Disney+ deal. Three listener emails round out the episode.
Hope you enjoy the show! Contact us anytime, hello@theDWshow.net

Downtime (1995) was an officially licensed Doctor Who fan film written by Marc Platt (Ghost Light) and featuring Nick Courtney, Lis Sladen, Deborah Watling and various other Doctor Who guest stars. Plus some Yeti.

4.10 Bidding Adieu
Doctor Who - Pieces of EighthVIEWERS of Doctor Who in the 21st century have become accustomed to watching how the show is made behind the scenes, through DVD and bluray extras, and Doctor Who Confidential.
However, back in 1996, these things were unheard of, with the only additional content coming in the form of an official electronic press kit, with interviews with Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and Daphne Ashbrook, plus the likes of Philip Segal.
But Bill Baggs was ahead of his time, and sent a small guerilla team to Canada, accompanying Sylvester McCoy, to record a video diary of his final days of the Doctor, before handing over the TARDIS key to Paul McGann.
This is the story of how Bidding Adieu came to be.
You can order it HERE directly from producers BBV.
