After “The Church on Ruby Road,” there should be no question that Ncuti Gatwa will master the role of The Doctor. However, we do need to address the fact that this is now a show with goblins and flying wooden ships….

Once again, it's time to share a few highlights from the past year of Something Who as we bring you a compilation from our episodes in 2023.

And there's a lot to choose from. In addition to our regular presenting team of Richard, Paul, Giles and Simon, we had a lot of guests this year, including Tim Burrows from The Missing Episodes podcast on our 10th anniversary discussion of the Omnirumour. We chatted to an actual Doctor Who writer in Matthew Jacobs, along with Vanessa Yuille, who together made the wonderful fan film Doctor Who Am I? Both Matthew and Vanessa were almost upstaged by a pneumatic drill, but saw the funny side.

We spoke with Steve Manfred about his friendship and collaboration with writer Neil Gaiman. Elizabeth Morton spoke with us about her family connections to Doctor Who, as well as her writing career. And Benjamin Cook, Rich Tipple and Timothy K Brown discussed their work on colourising the first Dalek story for the 60th anniversary.

Night and the Doctor is a series of five minisodes released on the Blu-ray box set of Series 6 — Bad Night, Good Night, First Night, and the completely unrelated Up All Night. In Last Night, the Doctor runs into a future version of himself, with a new haircut and a suit, about to take River to their last date on the planet Darillium.

Speaking of Moffat recycling his own ideas, Sally Sparrow is first featured in a short story in the 2006 Doctor Who Annual called What I Did on My Christmas Holidays by Sally Sparrow, in which Sally receives messages from the Ninth Doctor, who is trapped without the TARDIS in 1985. Its Christmas time and its part 12 of 12 celebrating 1973. 

What a film to end on, this classic was always shown (here in the UK) either on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day. Its a bit dubious in parts in todays standards which is why it doesnt get shown much nowadays which is a shame. Still we dont care and we loved it.
