Latest Podcast Episodes

Welcome to an extra long episode of Doctor Who Literature, but one of the deepest and most rewarding ones we've ever produced.

The subject is the February 1966 Doctor Who episode The Massacre, a troubled production where the original author tried to disclaim credit, the video is lost and only a few publicity photos survived, and the surviving audio is hard to untangle as William Hartnell only appears in a small handful of scenes.

We have three guests this week to help unravel the story:

--Repeat DWLit guest Denise Sutton joins Jason for a specially-recorded live introduction in Central London.

--Repeat DWLit guest Ian Potter, a Black Archives writer, helps Jason try to unravel the troubled production (and troubled production team!) at the heart of the TV serial.

--The Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, an American Baptist minister and Doctor Who fan, whose surname ties into this story, helps us understand the historical and religious context of August 1572.

And although he doesn't appear in this episode, we could not have produced this week without James Cooray Smith, who ⁠literally wrote the book on The Massacre⁠.

We'll be back next week to cover another William Hartnell adventure, with a much shorter episode!

Michael Herbert is a historian and the writer of the forthcoming biography, "Don't Believe Everything You See" - The Life and Writings of Malcolm Hulke. The book is due to be published by Telos Publishing some time in 2025.

(00:02:01) “Sorry!” is a television sitcom that aired on BBC1 from 1981 to 1988 starring Ronnie Corbett and centres on Timothy Lumsden who, 41 years old, still lives at home with his domineering mother and henpecked father.

(00:27:43) The screen test for Ben Hur (1959) between William Russell and George Baker can be found here.

(00:39:14) “Robo-Hunter” is a recurring strip in the British Comic 2000 AD, initially written by John Wagner and illustrated by Ian Gibson. The series stars Sam Slade, a laconic, ageing, cigar-smoking bounty hunter of robots that have gone renegade. In the first storyline, “Verdus” (also known as “The Robot Planet”), published between 1978 and 1979, Slade is dispatched to a distant colony planet to solve the mystery of its vanished colonists.

(00:48:25) This song is from “Lady Penelope Investigates”, a gramophone record released by Century 21 Records in November 1966. It is a compilation LP of their 1966 records F.A.B. and The Stately Homes Robberies.

(00:56:40) In 1928, the young architect Georgii Krutikov, in defending his diploma work at VKhUTEIN, presented a thesis project completely insane for the time, a “City of the Future,” which immediately became a sensation. The concept of a “flying city” was as follows: the architect proposed to leave work, leisure, and tourism on the ground, while living areas would be moved to communes floating in the clouds of the city. (01:00:12) “Shelley” is a British sitcom made by Thames Television and originally broadcast on ITV from 1979 to 1984 and from 1988 to 1992. It stars Hywel Bennett as Dr James Shelley, a sardonic, perpetually unemployed anti-establishment ‘freelance layabout’ with a doctoral degree.

And we look to the past, or rather how the past is being re-presented through new blu-ray and streaming releases with Jon Arnold and Max Kaschevsky... which leads nicely into Gallery of the Underrated, where James Cooray Smith (of Graeme's favourite Doctor Who-themed newsletter, The Psychic Paper -- which you should really subscribe!) brings the recently CG animated missing story, The Celestial Toymaker.
