Bonus Episode - Doctor Who Turns 58
Doctor Who LiteratureWelcome to the first bonus episode of Doctor Who Literature. For this episode we're discussing not the books, but the TV series itself, on this, November 23, 2021, it's 58th anniversary. Tying in to Jason's recent Twitter watch-through of the Classic Series, #drwhopilgrimage, this episode will feature two randomly selected episodes of the classic series, with live and unscripted commentary over each one. Most of Doctor Who is made up not of all-time stone-cold classics or the worst turkeys, but just average workaday episodes. What can we learn about classic Doctor Who by not watching the all-time titans, but just two random ordinary episodes? Which episodes will the episode generator give us, and what larger lessons about Doctor Who can we gather from these random stories?

Where'd you come from? Where am I going? - Village of The Angels Review
Who's He?In this episode of the Who's He? Podcast....
Review - Village of The Angels
This week Phil and Paul look but don't blink at Village of the Angels, chapter 5 of Doctor Who: Flux. With Weeping Angels, an old fashioned base under siege story and one hell of a cliff hanger, there was a lot to like. However, it did lead Phil and Paul to come up with a solution to beat a Weeping Angel that no-one had asked for.
Omega's Feedback Corner
Once again Phil is joined by Scott who reads out listener feedback.
Omega's Stats Corner
Oh no! We've got a touch of the stats again with the overnight viewing figures for Village of the Angels and the consolidate figures for Once, Upon Time.
The News
In this weeks news, we say a sad goodbye to the voice of Axos himself, Bernard Holley and we also say goodbye to the 13th Doctors TARDIS console room.

DWBRcast 244 - Village of the Angels!

Episode 51: Fresh Starts? - Part1
Something WhoWhen Paul and Giles burst into the editing suite, there's little choice but to marvel at the Audacity of it all.
This is the first half of our Anniversary special, comparing the first Doctor Who Story of all with the TV Movie. Both of which go by a variety of titles. This half focuses exclusively on An Unearthly Child / The Tribe of Gum / 100000 BC, but stick around, the second half will be along as soon as we've edited it.
Please like or share our podcast with people who will enjoy it, so we can build our listener base high for happiness. You can rate us directly on Apple Podcasts or Podchaser.com
Giles' book A History of the Universe in 21 Stars: (and 3 Imposters) can be found in all good bookshops and also here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Universe-21-Stars-Imposters/dp/1787394654/
Gav's book Doctor Who: Dalek Combat Training Manual can be found here (other retailers are available) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1785945327/
Also find his excellent YouTube series Terry Nation Army here: https://youtube.com/user/Dalek6388. And they've started a new podcast here: https://dalek6388.podbean.com/ which you should definitely listen to, once you've heard this.
And head over to https://www.bigfinish.com/, where we all love Paul's stories, especially for the Doctor Who and Jago and Litefoot ranges.
Richard's other podcast is called "If It's Hurting, It's not Working" and it's a fun and informative look at work - why we work, how we work, and what makes a great job. And also what makes a great workplace, how to turn things round when we're not enjoying our work and, in the end, how we can all make our work better. https://ifhurtnotwork.podbean.com/ Episode 3 is now out and there's a trailer at the end, before the outtakes.
The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end.

Primary Sources – February 1989
The Doctor Who ShowWelcome to the 14th episode of a short podcast we’re dropping on the feed every month in between our regular monthly shows.
In today’s podcast, Rob sits down with his Doctor Who Show co-host, Dave, to talk about the letters to DWM in February of 1989.
This is Doctor Who without a safety net. The conversations could go anywhere the guest wants them to go.
This is Primary Sources.

Episode 2 - The Zarbi
Doctor Who LiteratureWelcome back to the Doctor Who Literature podcast. This week, I'm discussing the second published Doctor Who novelization, adapting the notorious (and very highly-rated) 1965 serial, "The Web Planet". Bill Strutton's only contribution to the books line. Strutton, who had a prolific career and a fascinating biography, came to the books very early on, and some of his assumptions about the TARDIS and the Doctor's female companions look downright odd to us today in 2021. How does the book hold up, 56 years after its release? What positive messages can we take away from it today?

346: Negative Progress (Once, Upon Time)
Trust Your Doctor1 step forward, 23597908945832974317590327591375932175 steps back.
Have you ever seen that Disney Christmas special, “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas?” I remember owning it on DVD as a kid, but I actually for some reason remember thinking that the sequel, “Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas” was better. I don’t know why I remember this. I’m not sure anybody else even agrees with me. It’s Once, Upon Time, written by Chris Chibnall and aired on November 14, 2021.
Show-notes:
1:07: Dylan (I) obviously meant “John perTWEE and Joffery Beevers.” Also, the guy whose name we mispronounced for the entirety of The Prisoner (on Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast) was George Markstein.
15:02: It is actually called the uvula, I was being serious!
34:32: Tamagotchis still exist, so if you want one for yourself you can easily go and get one now. (Editor’s note: so do the Digimon v-pets.)
35:16: I’ve tried to find a reference for Box before with no avail, so I’ll see if Kiyan wants to try. (Editor’s note: I don’t know what this means, but check out Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast.)
36:13: The “The World If” meme.
36:34: The title of Episode 5 was even “Three End” because we made a pun off the future name of Triple Play.
45:05: Spoilers for two minutes from now, I’m talking about Brendan. (Editor’s note: why was this necessary? Also check out Flight Through Entirety.)
1:03:20: Don’t worry, Wikipedia will hook you up with information on Keyser Söze.
1:05:25: Not the same director, or even writer actually. Easy to get confused though.
1:17:17: Here’s that Keys of Marinus Revisited episode for you. Funny that “Three End” also covered Keys of Marinus. Is Flux a secret Keys of Marinus remake? (Editor’s note: no.)
1:25:30: Check out Firefly on Inevitable.
1:26:02: I’m reading from How Angles Really Look, so go and read about some more terrifying angels.
1:29:10: I put on my robe and wizard hat. You’re welcome.

The Word Elegant
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, Simon Moore joins us again for a quick jaunt to the planet Apalapucia, where we visit a medical facility so staggeringly baffling and inept that it’s even terrifying to an audience living in the English-speaking world. It’s going to be quite a while before we get to see a doctor — that’s why it’s called The Girl Who Waited.
Notes and links
All of us think that this episode is very Star Trek, Star Trek: Voyager in particular. Nathan compares it to Blink of an Eye, in which the Voyager crew interacts with a planet where time passes incredibly quickly, and they watch the planet develop technologically from the Bronze Age through to becoming a spacefaring civilisation. (It guest stars Daniel Dae Kim, amazingly.) This is not to be confused with the Original Series episode Wink of an Eye, in which hyper-accelerated aliens invisibly take over the Enterprise for some reason.
Richard compares the direction of this episode to the Louis Malle film Elevator to the Gallows (1958), in which a man murders his mistress’s husband with hilarious results. It’s French, after all.

Richard compares the direction of this episode to the Louis Malle film Elevator to the Gallows (1958), in which a man murders his mistress’s husband with hilarious results. It’s French, after all.

Whocast #453 – This beautiful yet unborn plot

Reality Bomb Episode 093A - Remembering Petra Mayer
Reality Bomb - a Doctor Who podcastNPR Books Editor Petra Mayer, who has been a longtime contributor to Reality Bomb, died suddenly on November 13. In this special episode Graeme Burk is joined by the Verity! podcast's Deb Stanish to remember Petra and the special enthusiasm she had for Doctor Who. We revisit the highlights of Petra's 26 appearances on the program, and represent four complete segments including Petra's first time on the program, doing a Gallery of the Underrated on the Sylvester McCoy story The Happiness Patrol way back in episode 013 (July 2014); Petra's stinging critique of the lack of women writers in Doctor Who from episode 018 (December 2014); Petra and Deb Stanish at our second New York City live show talking about the enduring power of regeneration in Doctor Who back in episode 038 (September 2016); and finally we have Petra's contribution to our "Variations on a Timeless Child" episode (083) on a retcon that did not please her (to put it mildly) from September 2020.
Petra Mayer will be missed by Doctor Who fans everywhere.
