Podcastica Episode 241: Survivors of the Flux OR For Whom The Division Bell Tolls
PodcasticaFolks, we are barrelling toward the finale for Doctor Who Flux! Our penultimate episode, Survivors of the Flux gives us lots to chew on. We get a deep download of Division lore, a twisted history of UNIT, and our very own Indiana Jones-like adventures (complete with an amazing hermit)! We're still loving this season, but we're also really hoping it'll stick the landing next week. How can the Doctor possibly save the universe and unpack the effects of the Flux?!

Episode 3 - The Crusaders
Doctor Who LiteratureThe third and final Frederick Muller-published Doctor Who novelization -- and its second by David Whitaker -- came out in February 1966. The book remains in print today and still generates many fresh topics for discussion. Are Ian and Barbara a couple? Are wars only waged between one good side and one evil side? Who are we supposed to root for in this book? When is it appropriate for an author to break the "show-don't-tell" rule? Is this a rote adaptation of the TV scripts for "The Crusade", or is David Whitaker using the book platform to tell a new story, one too broad and deep for the small screen? Join us as we discuss all these things.

Crossovers
The Doctor Who ShowThis month we're riffing on a challenge our listener @alicianeptune set for her YouTube viewers on the channel youtube.com/c/LatinAlice where she asked them to think about placing favourite book, film, or TV characters into other properties. In turn, she was riffing on older episodes of ours, placing Nu-Who Doctors in Classic episodes and Classic Doctors in Nu-Who episodes. This is a very meta topic this month!
Before then, of course, there’s some news from the past month in Doctor Who, and some mini-topics to discuss. You know the drill for our monthly episode by now, dear listener.
Hope you enjoy the episode. Contact us anytime, hello@theDWshow.net

347: I Regret Nothing and I Don’t Take it Back (Village of the Angels)
Trust Your DoctorWell, I suppose it was worth a shot trying to get him to take it back. (Editor’s note: No.)
We somehow went this entire episode without making a “Children of the Stones” joke. Can you believe that? I can’t believe that. We made a dozen of those jokes while we were watching the episode, so the fact that we didn’t make a single one in the episode is a little shocking. It’s Village of the Angels, written by Chris Chibnall and Maxine Alderton and aired on November 21, 2021.
Show-notes:
3:05: I couldn’t find out exactly when they finished Flux specifically, but I read that Jodie and Mandip wrapped the final special in October. Here’s a handy dandy timeline of the entire season’s + specials production schedule.
4:33: Here’s the article explaining why Doctor Who is apparently banned in China. Apparently the ban has something to do with treating history seriously, which I guess the Chinese government says that shows like Doctor Who don’t. Weird but hey. The article also reminded me that Winnie the Pooh is also censored in China. Lmao.
6:40: Here’s the “bloody good story” and “absolutely brilliant” tweets for ya.
11:40: Devon is a county in the south west of the UK.
16:19: Kiyan and I are referencing Geraint Cooper, from Torchwood.
18:06: Here’s a clip in case you forgot what an Ood vomiting out its brain looked like.
18:48: COME QUIETLY OR THERE WILL BE TROUBLE.
24:17: Kiyan probably could not find the phrase “There is no planet called Time” in the Halloween Apocalypse transcript, because the phrase was actually said in War of the Sontarans.
31:42: From Chakoteya: “JERICHO: Oh, I’ve seen many things beyond my comprehension, Doctor. I was one of the first British soldiers into Belsen at the end of the war. If you think a few stone statues will destroy my equilibrium you are mistaken. What do you need me to do?” Bergen-Belsen (or just Belsen) was a concentration camp.
32:20: I will never find this tweet but I don’t even care to defend this tweet.
33:15: Sorry for linking to Daily Mail, but they had the best picture of Jodie Whittaker looking miserable at the beach.
35:55: Here’s the tweet from the official BBC account of the angels and their scar, for all you fanatics to compare to.
48:47: Don’t worry, Know Your Meme comes through once again.
48:51: And here’s the link to the monkey puppet meme. I made this reference on our latest episode of Inevitable: A Classic Sci Fi Podcast, where we talked about the Firefly episode, Trash.
50:45: Check out our classic sci-fi podcast, Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast.
53:18: We covered assignment 3 of Sapphire and Steel like a year ago.
54:35: From Out of the Rain. Yeah, I’m linking Wikipedia for this and not tardis.fandom.com What are you gonna do about it?
59:29: We regretfully covered The Predator on our soon-to-be-defunct movie trilogy podcast, Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast.
1:01:07: Be sure to listen to listen to our episode on movie trilogies over on Triple Play: A Predator Podcast. This has to be the most useless show-note I’ve ever written.
1:29:55: We also have an episode on Pirates of the Caribbean over on Triple Play.
1:35:25: Check out Flight Through Entirety.

Something Really Different on Screen
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, Nathan and Peter find themselves trapped in the corridors of a grimy English hotel with Si Hart and Conrad Westmaas, where the rooms are full of biting into a woollen jumper, turning up to your maths exam totally naked, and the fact that one day, you, your loved ones and everyone who has ever heard of you will be completely and irrevocably dead. The janitor seems pretty fit though. It’s The God Complex.
Notes and links
It goes without saying that the ur-text for the scary hotel that’s the repository of the previous residents’ secret fears is Kubrick’s The Shining (1980). The AV Club review of this episode identifies it as an influence straightaway.
During the Hinchcliffe Era, nearly every story featured the Doctor and Sarah being menaced by an evil from the dawn of time who had not been sufficiently executed enough. We discuss the issue in our The Hand of Fear episode, Not Sufficiently Executed Enough.

Richard's other podcast is called "If It's Hurting, It's not Working" and it's a fun and informative look at work - why we work, how we work, and what makes a great job. The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end.

Crossovers
The Doctor Who ShowThis month we're riffing on a challenge our listener @alicianeptune set for her YouTube viewers on the channel youtube.com/c/LatinAlice where she asked them to think about placing Doctor Who characters into other properties.

Whocast #454 – Two and a half Idiots
Who – “Village of the Angels” – annehmen. Denn seit wann macht der Whocast halbe Sachen? Ob aber Chris Chibnall halbe Sachen gemacht hat oder dieses Mal wieder komplett verkackt, erfahrt Ihr in den kommenden 120 Minuten.

Everyone but James!
The Doctor Who PodcastJoin Leeson and JNT as they bring you Part 4 of Radio Leeson and their thoughts on Chapter Four of Flux, Village of the Angels. And many other things too as it turns out! JNT tackles the first couple of questions he’s received (get yours to him at feedback@thedoctorwhopodcast.com with AskJNT in the subject field) – and he then performs a guitar medley of his ol’ man’s favourite songs. No, we’re not sure why either, but we understand he’s taking requests.
Sanity returns in the form of Phil and Scott – and Michele, Brent, Drew and Ian drop by too. In fact, all the DWP hosts are on this one, apart from James, who has become obsessed with looking for songs with lyrics relevant to Doctor Who stories. Please send help.
We hope you enjoy the show. Please let us know you think, particularly of Ian’s Kooky Theory of the Week!! Or is it all that kooky after all?! Let us know! Email us feedback@thedoctorwhopodcast.com, get in touch with us on Twitter or search us up on Facebook.

Podcastica Episode 240: Village of the Angels OR Everytime a Church Bell Rings
PodcasticaSometimes there's an advantage to recording a day later that we normally do, especially when that day is Doctor Who's 58th anniversary! We dive into Village of the Angels, but we also have lots of news that dropped in honor of Doctor Who Day! And this episode just blew us out of the water! Possibly the second greatest Weeping Angel story ever. There's also lots of us to speculate on as we enter the final third of the Flux storyline! Do we have any idea what's going on? Maybe! Possibly? Probably not! But we're having a ton of fun on the ride!
