  • Kasterborous Down: The Show Goes On!

    17 April 2014 (8:10am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Dear readers, as you’ve probably noted, things have become a bit wibbly-wobbly at K Towers in the last day or so. Apologies for the inconvenience! Technology is fantastic, but alas, even the best tech falters on occasion. However, even when we’re down, we’re never completely offline!

Here are a few ways to make sure you can keep with Kasterborous if the site goes down:

    - Facebook: That’s right, if you were unaware, we’re live on the social media juggernaut and would love for you to connect with us. Plus, it’s an additional way to connect with other like-minded Whovians.

    - Twitter: If 140 characters or less is your medium of choice, you can find Kasterborous on Twitter here. Also, many of our writers are on Twitter as well (including yours, truly), so feel free to connect with us there as well.

    - Instagram: Pics, videos, and comments all through the oh so popular filters of Instagram; what’s not to love?

    - Audioboo: to the uninitiated, we have a fantastic weekly PodKast (with a K, of course!) featuring Christian, Brian, and James, who cover the major points of Who news from the week and tackle relevant and entertaining topics. One of the best things we have going here at K Towers, in my estimation. It can be found here at Audioboo.

Again, we so appreciate your patience and, as always, thank you for being part of our community and readership! Allons-y!

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastThis week’s podKast was originally recorded on Monday, using Skype and a compatible recording tool that we’ve used weekly in the past. Sadly, this time it didn’t work. The result is a second recording on Tuesday, this time using Google Hangouts. You can watch the results above, or listen on iTunes and Audioboo as usual.

In order to avoid sounding a little tired going over the same material again, we opted instead to cover news items that we hadn’t “rehearsed”. The results are certainly different, and we think as entertaining as usual.

The podKast hosts this week are Christian Cawley and James McLean, whose combined dishevelment will do nothing to dispel any illusions you might have about working from home.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastFollowing last week’s fascinating but silly shenanigans with John Guilor, the PodKast with a “K” gets down to business with James McLean and Brian A Terranova discussing some recent news without the formatted interjections of lead host Christian Cawley.

The result is a laid-back chat about some recent Doctor Who news. Some items you may have already heard discussed on the podKast, but not with Brian, so you’ll be getting some all-new thoughts and a very different feel to the usual show.

For the optimum enjoyment of this week’s podKast, we recommend some comfy slippers, a nice chair and a warm drink. Imagine yourself sat watching James and Brian as they chat, eavesdropping on their thoughts and opinions on recent Whovian topics.

Also, we spend a chunk of time discussing Mark Gatiss’ forthcoming BBC Worldwide junket to Brazil to promote Doctor Who and Sherlock, marvel at the sales figures for The Web of Fear on DVD, celebrate the reunion of the Doctor, Ace and Bernice, and share with you our recommendations!

    Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast

Hey podKast fans! It’s that time of the week when we ask you to grab a coffee or start your journey into work and settle down to listen to our weekly Doctor Who chat.

In this week’s podKast (with a “K”) Christian Cawley and James McLean guide you through the latest big stories in the Doctor Who world. We discuss Peter Capaldi’s jumper – costume or warmth aid? – and also ask whether or not the rumours concerning his planned single year in the role are anything more than ill-advised conjecture. As we recorded the podKast, Samuel Anderson’s casting as Danny Pink was announced, so listen out for a bit of discussion on that.

We also turn our attention to the increasing noise concerning the omnirumour, specifically whether or not missing serial Marco Polo has been found, and Matt Smith recently recorded an awesome video for a poorly child.

    What a guy!

Oh, and we also try to work out what is wrong with The Horns of Nimon. Someone has to.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastWelcome, dear listener/reader to this week’s podKast with a “K” in which we welcome Doctor Who fanzine producer Gareth Kavanagh, editor of Vworp Vworp! as a guest for the full show!

Christian Cawley and James McLean are in the hotseat too, with a nice selection of topics under discussion. To kick it off, we mull over the recent Buzzfeed.com list based around the idea of how Doctor Who might have been different had it been created in the USA rather than in Television Centre.

Following this, we spend a few moments appreciating the contributions that the late Christopher Barry made to Doctor Who between 1963 (The Daleks) and 1979 (The Creature from the Pit). Given that we have unofficial fourth podKaster Gareth Kavanagh on hand as well, there’s also a bit of missing episodes chatter in there for you lucky people as well, not to mention some updates on the progress of Vworp Vworp! issue 3…

Rounding off the show (yet taking up a greater chunk of the running time than either of the other topics) are our recommendations, with 1977 serial Underworld getting the lion’s share of the discussion. Also, listen out for Gareth’s request for help deciding which Doctor Who book from his collection he should read next – leave your suggestions in the comments below!

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastYou probably don’t know this, but Kasterborous editor Christian Cawley has been a little under the weather of late, which has resulted in this week’s podKast landing horrifically late – almost overtaking itself in the process.

Worry not, however, dear listener, as Christian has teamed up with James McLean (a poorly Brian Terranova was also sadly unavailable) in order to discuss some of the most important Doctor Who news of the past week. In this week’s huskier-than-usual podKast (Christian’s recovering chest infection sounding a little Barry White-esque, quite appropriate for a podKast recorded on St. Valentine’s Day), we discuss the recent speculation concerning Doctor Who‘s supposed return in July, the apparent lack of female scriptwriters in the show since 2005, whether our favourite Time Lord has really been a sexual creature since day one, a case pressed recently by Steven Moffat, and whether the BBC will close the doors on the TARDIS for good should its flagship show suddenly end up being run by illegal aliens following the referendum on Scottish independence (yes, we really went there).

As ever, we’ve also got the recommendations, among which is The Sun Makers. Oh, and something we didn’t mention in the podKast – it’s a new series! We’re on our fourth volume as of this week’s edition. Milestone!

You’ll notice a new theme tune this week – huge thanks to Russell Hugo for his sterling work in this area!

    Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast

You’re in for a treat this week as Doctor Who scriptwriter Andrew Smith recalls 1980′s Full Circle in a special interview recorded at The Lass O’Gowrie in March 2013.

Also featuring Tylos actor Bernard Padden in his first convention appearance, the interview was recorded as part of a Writercon event at the now-defunct public house and cultural epicentre.

Let this week’s podKast stand as both testament and tribute to The Lass, and all who sailed in her.

While you’re at it, listen out for stories about production on Full Circle, including a never-before told story about Lalla Ward…

If you’re somehow addicted to the sultry tones of Brian Terranova and James McLean, worry not as the duo are present to provide an introduction to the interview, conducted by editor Christian Cawley.

This is the first in a series of convention interviews on the podKast, and we’ve got some big names coming up in the next few weeks!

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastWell, it had to be done – the Kasterborous podKast team of Christian Cawley, Brian Terranova and James McLean got together at the weekend to discuss The Time of the Doctor and offer their thoughts on whether Matt Smith’s Doctor Who finale was a hit or a miss.

Our decision? Well, it’s not quite Time and the Rani, but it would seem that we weren’t as happy with it as we might have hoped to be…

Before the main event, however, there is plenty to get through, such as our Doctor Who-themed Christmas presents and editor Christian Cawley’s appearance on BBC radio documentary The TARDIS on Teesside.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastThis week, we set our sights on Christmas Day and Matt Smith’s sad departure from #DoctorWho. It is, indeed, The Time of the Doctor, and there is much to discuss…

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastThis week’s podKast (with a “K”) gets in an early celebratory mood for Christmas with a selection of recommendations, a chat about Brian Terranova’s latest Sonic Screwdriver prop and a look at Doctor Who: Legacy, in a section that also chats with the game’s developers.

Perhaps most interestingly, however, is the news that Steven Moffat has assured fans that there will be no Series 8 split. While we may have to wait until August 2013 for the Peter Capaldi era to begin properly, it is at least reassuring that we will get to see him in a run of 13 episodes.

So, prepare yourself, dear listener, to enjoy the Kasterborous PodKast with Christian Cawley, Brian Terranova and James McLean!

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastIt’s probably fair to say that this has been one of the podKast (with a “K”)’s oddest weeks.

Disrupted by deadlines on the original recording date of Monday, Christian was unable to take part. “No problem,” thought he, “my colleagues James and Brian are more than able to cope with the technicalities of recording a Skype call and uploading it to Google Drive.”

That, listener, was his first mistake.

So we opted to record live on Thursday evening instead, using Google Hangouts. Although a podKast was “recorded” on Monday, it wasn’t actually recorded, something that James and Brian were naturally somewhat unhappy about. So this second attempt was a way for them to try and recall the best bits with Christian also offering his own thoughts and experiences of the week of Doctor Who.

Which brings us to the other odd moment, the one that can only be accurately related by you clicking play and watching or listening to this week’s podKast, where we learn that mild-mannered Kasterborous editor Christian Cawley was mistaken for someone “looking for a good time” outside the BBC Tees building in Middlesbrough.

(Thanks to DocWhom for inspiration with this week’s title and image…)

This week’s Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”) has had a troubling gestation. Originally “recorded” on Monday by James McLean and Brian Terranova, the hour-plus chat about various topics including The Light at the End (Big Finish’s Doctor Who anniversary story) somehow didn’t actually find itself stored in any meaningful way.

    We were without a podKast.

So, we decided to try again, this time with the full team and on Google Hangouts. We’ll be broadcasting online from 11.15pm GMT (6.15pm EST) tonight, so if you’re interested in offering us your thoughts about the various topics to be discussed (including, briefly, The Light at the End) then feel free to message us through Hangouts, YouTube or on Twitter.

For updates about the broadcast, keep @kasterborousdw open between now and then!

    Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast

This week’s Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”) covers a lot of ground, so gird your loins dear listener and prepare yourself for a journey through time, space and vague grasps of copyright law!

We kick off this week’s show with a chat about the wonderful new trailers for The Day of the Doctor before focusing our sharp legal brains at Stef Coburn’s claim that his father invented the TARDIS and could the BBC kindly pay up.

As unlikely as that might sound, we urge you not to get too upset about his attitude – after all, Brian Terranova will be regaling you with tales of chats with Simon Fisher-Becker, Ian McNeice and Sylvester McCoy at last week’s L.I.Who event!

While the interviews themselves require a little tidying up before we can present them to you, fear not – we have an interview this week with Manchester impresario Gareth Kavanagh in which he gives us a summary of the coming events in the Who at Fifty festival over the next couple of weeks.

Frankly, dear listener, there is a lot to get through, so let’s get started!

    Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast

In our continuing but loosely-defined run up to the Doctor Who 50th anniversary, we cast our minds back 10 years in this week’s podKast to the 40th anniversary. Yes, there was a 40th anniversary of our favourite show, but you’d be hard-pressed to recall anything particularly significant about it.

Christian Cawley, James McLean and Brian Terranova give it a go, however, mentioning Big Finish audio Zagreus, Scream of the Shalka and even 35th anniversary novel The Infinity Doctors by Lance Parkin.

Before we make it there, however, we mull over Peter Davison’s recent comments about companions, a topic that can also be found discussed at length on the current Kasterborous editorial.

Look out too for this week’s recommendations, including Summer Falls and Other Stories, as featured in the past two runs of Doctor Who.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastThis week’s podKast brings a selection of interviews from the recent Doctor Who missing episodes event in London. Thanks to Gareth Kavanagh you can expect to hear from Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling – who both appeared in the recovered episodes of The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear as companions Jamie McCrimmon and Victoria Waterfield – and writer Mark Gatiss, whose passion for the London Underground leads him to tell us something about an upcoming Sherlock episode…

All of this means, however, that the usual trio of Christian, James and Brian has been dispensed with for a week. Instead, Christian and Gareth Kavanagh, editor of Vworp Vworp! and our man on the ground at the event, discuss and introduce clips from the exciting day in London in which long lost episodes of Doctor Who were screened for the first time in 45 years!

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

It’s time for our monthly live podKast this weekend, and from 3pm tomorrow (Sunday, October 6th) UK time we’ll be on Google Hangouts to record this week’s show – and we want you to get involved!

Topics under discussion this time around include the Doctor Who Figurine Collection, some of the big news of the past week (including, perhaps, David Tennant’s accent – both his own and his thoughts on that of others…) and The Three Doctors. That’s right, as the weeks wend their timey-wimey way to the 50th anniversary, we’re taking a look at the Doctor’s previous anniversaries, starting off with 1973′s trio of Time Lords.

To take part, you can head to our Google Hangout or YouTube page from 3pm UK and 11am EST US time where James, Christian and Brian will be ready to talk – and be talked back to!

Watch out also for updates on Twitter and Facebook between now and then.

    Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast

This week’s podKast covers a trio of topical Doctor Who news items AND gives you the chance to win a copy of Doctor Who: The Vault from BBC Books!

James McLean, Christian Cawley and Brian Terranova are on hand to offer their thoughts and discuss the recent #SaveTheDay teaser, the sad tone to the rediscovered William Hartnell interview and Steven Moffat’s suggestion that Fires of Pompeii‘s Caecilius and Torchwood: Children of Earth‘s John Frobisher resemblance to the Twelfth Doctor (for obvious reasons) will be written into the show.

We’ll leave you to listen to the show rather than challenge you to guess as to what we thought about these topics (although the word Atlantis is uttered with derision…) but note that the competition is towards the end. Email your answer to christian@kasterborous.com before midnight, Saturday October 5th – so act quickly!

So why a competition? Well, it’s simple. Since we’ve been running the podKast through Audioboo, our audience figures have skyrocketed. We’re talking of an effective doubling of our listeners, so not only do we wish you all a hello and welcome, our competition is there to give something back for your growing support over the past two years.

    Let’s hit play!

    Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast

There is much to talk about in this week’s Kasterborous podKast (with a “K) as Christian, James and Brian turn their attention to the phenomenon of animated reconstructions of missing episodes.

Note: we’re not discussing the ongoing missing episodes rumour in this podKast.

Over the past few years, BBC Worldwide have released several Doctor Who DVDs from the classic era with animated episodes to replace those lost to time. These have been well received on the whole, but we thought we’d mull over some of the differences in approach from the animators, in amongst discussing some of the recent 50th anniversary and Christmas special news.

In fact, we even go the whole hog and cover the Paul Cornell version of the Master – also played by Derek Jacobi – in The Scream of the Shalka!

Following the remarkable success of our first live podKast on Google Hangouts and YouTube on August 4th – scheduled so that we could commentate on the unveiling of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor – we’re running a repeat performance later today in what we hope will be the first of a regular monthly “live show”!

While we’ll have a rough outline of topics to discuss, we’ll be taking questions from viewers too so if you want to take part, you can email, tweet (@kasterborousDW) or leave a comment on the video, which will appear in the space above from 3pm (11am EST). You can also enjoy proceedings on Google Hangouts and on YouTube.

Don’t miss it – although if you do, the podKast will still be available to rewatch later. You’ll also be able to listen – as usual – on Stitcher and Audioboo, but these audio versions won’t be available until during the week.

Usually on the podKast (with a “K”), we talk about stuff then squeeze the recommendations in at the end.

This week, we’re flipping it around, talking about a little bit of stuff at the start (transforming TARDISes, time lapse videos of police box builds, etc.) and filling the rest of the episode up with a massive recommendation – the new Spearhead from Space Special Edition on Blu-ray!

Interestingly, James McLean hasn’t yet seen the new upgraded high definition version, which means that he can be your way in, asking the questions of Christian and Brian as they discuss the upgrade, the extras and the remarkable impact the serial had on Doctor Who back in 1970.
