Podcastica Episode 263: Resurrection of the Daleks OR And then More Murdering
PodcasticaLONDON 1984! Apparently a bleak hellscape in which the Daleks have a team of mercenary human clones (with helmets we're surprised didn't become a marketing opportunity) working to unearth Davros while also infiltrating various areas of human culture. See, there's a lot happening in Resurrection of the Daleks, but instead of anything getting resurrected, lots (and lots) of characters get gunned down...often for no reason. This is an unusual Doctor Who story if only for that fact, but it's one we'd have to review eventually!

Episode 43 - Death to the Daleks (with Paul Simpson)
Doctor Who LiteratureThis week in September 2022 saw the announcement of the title of the next Doctor Who episode ("The Power of the Doctor"), although not the release date. This week also saw "Cobra Kai" Season 5 drop on Netflix, though that's of slightly less importance to fandom.
My guest this week is Paul Simpson (@scifibulletin), who has several terrific stories to tell about the early years of the Target Books publishing office and some amazing details about the early writers (Malcolm Hulke and his graph paper!). Paul is currently managing editor of Sci-Fi Bulletin.
Release information and a link to "Doctor Who and the Daleks: The Illustrated Edition" can be found here.
Stick around for the second half of the program, when Jason discusses the "Death to the Daleks" novelization -- a perfect example of how Terrance adds value and insight and depth to the TV serial even in a very short book. There's lots to break down today.
Please e-mail the pod at DrWhoLiterature@gmail.com.

Fluffy Bums
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, we’re joined aboard a Soviet submarine by Mark McManus, Jack Shanahan and a low-effort lizard alien, who proceeds to run around the boat in the nude murdering members of the crew. But we’re all too interested in Jenna Coleman, David Warner, some guys from Game of Thrones and a discarded fibreglass suit of armour to notice.
Notes and links
The tale of Steven Berkoff’s wilful destruction of the climactic scenes of The Power of Three is told in its entirety in Episode 234: Stop Watching a Kids’ Show.
Those of you lucky enough not to remember 1983 might need to be told about The Hunt for Red October (1990), a film set on board a Russian submarine captained by a typically Scottish-sounding Sean Connery. Mark Gatiss is definitely looking over his shoulder at that film while he’s writing this episode.
Nathan refers to the most recent episode of Bondfinger, where we comment on am episode of The Saint which contains scenes of French people speaking to one another in English with a French accent. (Which is just the sort of thing they probably do all the time just to prank us.)
Here’s El Sandifer’s brutal assessment of the Ice Warriors: “…if we’re being honest, the fact that they are literally green reptile monsters from Mars has to mark the point where the show has simply given up on monsters and concluded that the audience will accept anything.”
Spencer Wilding played Skaldak in this story and was the Wooden King in The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe and the Minotaur in The God Complex. He also played Darth Vader in Rogue One. Fans of hefty lads will enjoy his Instagram. I certainly did.

Episode 63: Looks Familiar
Something WhoHere's a surprise for you - a new episode of Something Who only a month after the previous one.
And what an episode. Richard, Giles and Paul welcome their special guest - actor, stand-up comedian, writer, presenter and podcaster Toby Hadoke for a chat about a couple of stories about alien invasions that use duplicates: 4th Doctor story The Android Invasion, from Season 13, and 9th Doctor story Aliens of London and World War Three from Series 1. As per recent convention, this episode is the first half of that conversation, featuring The Android Invasion.
Please like or share our podcast with people who will enjoy it, so we can build our listener base high for happiness. You can rate us directly on Apple Podcasts or Podchaser.com
Giles' book A History of the Universe in 21 Stars: (and 3 Imposters) can be found in all good bookshops and also here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Universe-21-Stars-Imposters/dp/1787394654/
Paul appears in Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast https://missingepisodes.podbean.com/. And head over to https://www.bigfinish.com/, where we all love Paul's stories.
Richard has another podcast with co-host Emily, called "If It's Hurting, It's not Working" and it's a fun and informative look at work - why we work, how we work, and what makes a great job. And also what makes a great workplace, how to turn things round when we're not enjoying our work and, in the end, how we can all make our work better. Go to https://ifhurtnotwork.podbean.com/ and https://ifhurtnot.work for more.
Our cover art was designed for us by Bea Garrido. She's a really talented artist, who you can find on Twitter using @BeaGarrido00, where, among other artworks, you can get hold of the prints of some remarkable paintings of characters from Doctor Who.

Movie Special #2
Who and CompanySo we thought we'd do something a little different this month...
About a year and a half ago, we paired some of our favorite movies with Doctor Who stories and we got such a great response that we decided to do it again. Now telling you the movies and the stories would be cheating, but we can tell you that this time we have 4 movie/Doctor Who pairings and they are movies that you know and love....well most of them anyway.
Back to our regular format next time! Thanks for listening!

Episode 54: Dr. Who Classic Hardcovers year 6 (1979) with Tony Whitt
Doctor Who Collectors Podcast1979 was a tough year for the world with high inflation and gasoline prices doubling! It was a good year for Dr. Who. Tom Baker’s Doctor in his 2nd year in the USA and now rural parts of Canada. WH Allen decided to reprint 1 book and print 8 new books this year. Not even keeping pace with 1 per month. Nelson-Doubleday works with Pinnacle to produce a book club hardcover of 3 stories only available in the USA. Tony Whitt and I go through the list in publication order with Tony giving perspective on the actual stories. Larry talks about book conditions and values. These books are very expensive to procure. This will also be the last year you see a cover by Chris Achilleos.See The Video Interview only on Patreon! ($15 level or above).

Episode 42 - The Time Warrior (with Conrad Westmaas)
Doctor Who LiteratureIt's been a busy week in world news, especially in England, with the selection of a new Prime Minister, the passing of the Queen, and the accession of a new King.
Here on Doctor Who Literature, we tackle the novelization of "The Time Warrior", a book with sole writing credit to Terrance Dicks, but actually the work of two men: Terrance, and Robert Holmes.
We spend some considerable time on the book's Prologue, written by Holmes. This week's guest, Conrad (@HairOfTheHound_), lays down one of the great guest-readings of all time. Jason and Conrad have a long chat about the state of Doctor Who in 2022, "The Time Warrior" on TV, that prologue, and all the other wonderful material in the book.
Conrad takes a run at becoming Champion of "20 Questions". Will he succeed?
Finally, Jason goes through the rest of the book chapter by chapter. What happens to Eric the Squire in the book vs. on TV? Who is Professor Dingle? Who is Professor Crabshaw? Who has the upper hand in their alliance -- Linx, or Irongron? The answers to all these might surprise you...Please e-mail the pod at DrWhoLiterature@gmail.com.

There’s an Apostrophe
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThe Doctor has a very limited first date repetoire: watching the destruction of Earth with weird aliens, visiting a far-future traffic jam full of weird aliens, seeing an entire marketing department being slaughtered by weird aliens, and stopping a gentle space whale from being endlessly tortured by English people. And his first date with Clara is no exception: hiring a space moped from a weird alien called Dor’een and visiting The Rings of Akhaten.
Notes and links
It’s in her essay on The Bells of Saint John that El Sandifer says that the second part of Series 7 “is an extended exercise in not fucking up too badly that is, in everyone’s eyes, undermined by fucking up at least once, though opinions differ on precisely where.”
The Rings of Akhaten came ninth last in Doctor Who Magazine’s First Fifty Years poll in 2014. (Yes, that’s number 233, as Peter happened to remember with perfect accuracy.) You can find the rest of the results here. Time and the Rani came third last, so, you know.
Emilia Jones, who played Merry in this episode, is 20 years old now, of course. In 2021, she starred in a film called CODA, in which she played Marlee Matlin’s daughter. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2022.
Yes, a before-they-were-famous Rock “the Dwayne” Johnson did feature in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager called Tsunkatse, in which he is beaten up by Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine. Here is Johnson admitting to this on Twitter (complete with video evidence), and here is Jeri Ryan’s reply.
Here’s Big Finish announcing the casting of Lauren Cornelius as Dodo Chaplet in the First Doctor Adventures. The press release is curiously reticent about what accent Lauren is intending to use.
