Episode 73: Doctor Who Am I?
Something WhoHere's another of our special episodes.
Over a year ago our podcast Twitter account was followed by Matthew Jacobs, the writer of the TV Movie. This was both exciting and terrifying in equal measure, as we'd just made an episode that featured the TV Movie, that had not been entirely complimentary. We became aware that Matthew was promoting an independent film called Doctor Who Am I? And recently Richard took the chance to watch it on DVD, though it's now widely available in the UK on a variety of platforms. So, excitingly, in this episode, Richard talks with Matthew and Vanessa Yuille who created the film together. This is funny and sometimes deep conversation about the nature of being a fan, with the added excitement of someone with a pneumatic drill attacking the outside of Matthew's apartment. We talk about Vanessa and Matthew's journey with the film, US fans and conventions, and we touch on Matthew's childhood connection with the with Doctor Who, when his father played Doc Holliday in The Gunfighters.
Thanks to Vanessa and Matthew for sharing your stories and for the generous donation of your time.
Please like or share our podcast with people who will enjoy it, so we can build our listener base high for happiness. You can rate us directly on Apple Podcasts or Podchaser.com
Richard's other podcast "If It's Hurting, It's not Working" is currently on hiatus, but it's a fun and informative look at work - why we work, how we work, and what makes a great job. And also what makes a great workplace, how to turn things round when we're not enjoying our work and, in the end, how we can all make our work better. For all episodes, go to https://ifhurtnotwork.podbean.com/ and https://ifhurtnot.work.

TDP 1141: #DoctorWho 8th 5. Doctor Who: Time War 5: Cass
Tin Dog PodcastThis title was released in January 2023. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 28 February 2023, and on general sale after this date. The Doctor and his great-grandson Alex are back travelling the universe together… but when that universe is in the grips of a Time War, the unexpected lurks round every corner... 5.1 Meanwhile, Elsewhere by Tim Foley (1 part) The Doctor and Alex arrive on a tropical beach where something’s amiss. Meanwhile, elsewhere… a desperate pilot runs for his life. Meanwhile, elsewhere… it’s Cass Fermazzi’s first day on an errand-class starship. Meanwhile, elsewhere… it’s the beginning of the end of everything. 5.2 Vespertine by Lou Morgan (1 part) It’s Cass’s first trip in the TARDIS, and the Doctor is determined to make it one to remember. But when they arrive at a research base that shouldn’t exist, built above a missing explorer’s ship that should never have been found, it seems their visit’s going to be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Because deep beneath the ice, there’s more than just a long-lost ship waiting for them… 5.3 Previously, Next Time by James Moran (2 parts) Part One: The Doctor, Cass and Alex land to find out what's causing temporal anomalies with the TARDIS, and come across an uninhabited planet, a mysterious factory, and a weapon so dangerous, it could destroy the Universe. But things go catastrophically wrong… Part Two: The factory has vanished along with the TARDIS, and the formerly uninhabited planet is now fully populated by people who have been here for thousands of years, people who have never heard of the Time War OR Daleks. Something very strange is going on with time itself - and it's running out, fast.

Bonus Episode - Chris Boucher and Harlan Ellison (with Philip Hinchcliffe and Jason Davis)
Doctor Who LiteratureThis week we take a break in between the 1981 and 1982 seasons to explore the legacies of two writing titans.
Harlan Ellison wrote the 7-page introduction that appeared in most American reprints of Target novelizations, put out by Pinnacle Books. How did that essay come to be commissioned, and why did Harlan write it? We have answers! We're joined by Jason Davis, who edited several of Harlan's collections, and shares his knowledge with us, in an interview recorded live at Gallifrey One in Los Angeles in February 2022.
You can find Jason at Humanity Is My Business.
We are then rejoined by Philip Hinchcliffe, Doctor Who's producer between 1974 and 1977, and producer for Chris Boucher's first two TV episodes, to discuss the work and legacy of Mr. Boucher, who passed away in December 2022. This interview was recorded in January 2023.
And stay tuned for a bonus conversation, also recorded live at Gally, with long-time show contributors David Barsky and Bill Evenson. This conversation is, ah... much less scholarly and stately than the other two.
Doctor Who Literature is now a member of the Direction Point Doctor Who podcast network.

(00:11:20) “The Doctor Who Years“ was a streaming video, charting the history of Doctor Who on BBCi’s official Doctor Who website, where it is no longer available for viewing. It was produced to coincide with the return of the series to BBC Television screens in 2005, and was intended to present a potted history of the original Doctor Who series, broadcast between 1963–1989, in a manner which would be entertaining to new viewers, unfamiliar with the original series. The video was presented in three parts, The Sixties, The Seventies and The Eighties and featured material from every Doctor Who serial, presented chronologically and accompanied by narrative text and pop music that had featured in the UK Singles Chart at the time the clips were originally broadcast.
(00:14:02) “Some Mothers Do Ave Em” was a BBC sitcom, created and written by Raymond Allen and starring Michael Crawford and Michele Dotrice. It was first broadcast in 1973 and ran for two series, including two Christmas specials in 1974 and 1975. After a three-year absence, the programme returned for a third series in 1978 and again in 2016 for a one-off special. The series regularly garnered 25 million viewers and was broadcast in 60 countries. The series follows the accident-prone Frank Spencer and his tolerant wife Betty through Frank’s various attempts to maintain a job, which frequently end in disaster. The sitcom was noted for its stunt work, performed by Crawford himself, and it featured several well-known and much-lampooned catchphrases that have become part of British popular culture. The famous roller skating scene (featuring Hayden’s dad’s best friend) can be seen here. A judiciously edited version of this highlights where Hayden senior’s friend appears and can be seen on our Youtube channel here.
(00:16:08) Ncuti Gatwa’s latest costume compared with the one worn by Lenny Henry in his 1980s Doctor Who spoof can be seen on our Tumblr page here.
(00:18:26) This audio clip from Eastenders can be seen here.
(01:23:22) The “Tom Baker: In Confidence” interview from 2010 can be found here.

The Day of the Jackal
Waffle On PodcastWaffle On about The Day of the Jackal.
Part 2 of 12 celebrating 1973.
Hello and welocme to this special year in which both Meds and Kell turn 50 years old. So what better way to celebrate than to do a years worth of films from 1973 and this month we have Edward Fox looking rather cool in The Day of the Jackal. Its a stunningly good film full of suspense and cravats. Also we have never seen such dedication to getting the French accent right, well at least Anton Rodgers tries.
We hope you enjoy this episode, please do share and stay safe.
