Two-minute Time Lord
- Description:
- Two-minute Time Lord is a commentary podcast about the BBC ' s popular family science fiction program, Doctor Who. We ' ll try to keep this context in mind as we review episodes, comment on the news of the moment, and otherwise pontificate: Doctor Who is not FOR a thirtysomething podcaster. It ' s for that nine-year-old behind the sofa. But his or her mum and dad have been invited along for the ride, as are those of us who were kids when Peter Davison first picked up a cricket bat. And we ' ll keep it to two minutes, because we ' re ALL in a hurry.

2MTL 190: "You Haven't Seen The Aztecs?!"
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 27 secondsI was publicly shamed by Rob Shearman and Toby Hadoke in The Doctor Who Podcast #53 for not having seen "The Aztecs." This week, while recovering from the Plague, I made amends.
It's a good 'un.
-
2MTL 189: Hoping for a (Torchwood) Miracle
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 14 seconds"Children of Earth" was undeniably brilliant, but it ran the Torchwood concept through a Cuisinart. Is there enough left for "Miracle Day" to feel like Torchwood, or something new entirely? And is that a good thing?
-
2MTL 188: "World War Three" Two-minute Throwback
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 34 secondsYes, "World War Three" is better than "Aliens of London." Which is somewhat like saying a stab wound is better than amputation. All the same, there's some important and valuable stuff in RTD's otherwise least-successful Doctor Who story.
PLUS an announcement: there's a trivia throwdown coming at Gallifrey One between The Doctor Who Podcast and Staggering Stories. I'm moderating this cataclysmic struggle, so I need your trivia questions and answers. Send them to quiz@twominutetimelord.com by February 10!
-
2MTL 187: CRISIS AT THE NTAs EVERYBODY PANIC not really
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 8 secondsRecrimination! Rage! Retweeting! We're looking at the (non-)controversy over Doctor Who's losses at the National Television Awards yesterday, and the ritual assignations of blame.
Everything's fine, folks. Really.
-
2MTL 186: IDW's New Eleventh Doctor Series
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 2 minutes and 57 secondsIn the first issue of the newly-relaunched Doctor Who comic series from IDW, writer Tony Lee captures the Eleventh Doctor so meticulously you're tempted to credit Matt Smith for the acting job.
(Tony was last seen in these parts reviewing The Pandorica Opens and talking about comics in 2MTL 143.)
-
2MTL 185: "Aliens of London" Two-minute Throwback
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 2 minutes and 52 secondsMichael of the excellent Tin Dog Podcast frequently observes, when he reviews an old and not-much-missed story, that "it's actually not that bad!" Would that I could say the same of an episode that brought to 2005 some of the stereotypical criticisms leveled at the classic series: bad effects, bad monsters and bad pacing.
-
2MTL 184: Yes, I Have a Freak Flag
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 0 secondsPlease indulge me in yet another slightly extended podcast, with a little look at the proud eccentricities and the less-proud excesses and turf wars of Doctor Who fandom.
Andy Ihnatko's tongue-in-cheek Freak Flag Compact
-
2MTL 183: The (Anti-American???) Politics of Doctor Who
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 57 secondsDoctor Who is anti-American? That's not exactly what Oklahoma City University professor Mark DiPaolo said in his Journal of Popular Culture article, but his assertions about the show's politics made some interesting fodder for BBC Radio 4's Thinking Allowed. Does this family SF show have a political point of view worth exploring…?
-
2MTL 182: "The Unquiet Dead" Two-minute Throwback
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 21 secondsResuming our trek through the revived series from the beginning, we take a look at the Victorian pseudo-historical featuring Charles Dickens, whose stories provided skeleton and muscle for the 2010 Christmas special.
-
2MTL 181: "A Christmas Carol" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 30 secondsIt was certainly a Christmasy Christmas special Steven Moffat provided us this year, although it DID bear a few resemblances to one from a few years ago. Here's my take on "A Christmas Carol." Many, many thanks to BBC America, Worldwide, and the mothership in Cardiff for bringing the show to the U.S. on the original trasmission date!
-
2MTL 180: Trying to Be Cricket About Doctor Who's Changes
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 3 secondsOn the eve of Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol, Paul Cornell's treatise on cricket prompts me to finally come to terms with Series 5.
-
2MTL 179: Top Gear's Lessons for "Doctor Who USA"
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 11 secondsTop Gear America's taking it on the chin, dare I say unfairly, from the purist fans of the original. And that helps me predict whether Doctor Who will follow in The Office's footsteps as another BBC property being remade for U.S. audiences.
-
2MTL 178: Shearman and Hadoke's Running Through Corridors, Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 20 secondsRob Shearman and Toby Hadoke's new book is the first in a series that takes a deep look at every Doctor Who episode from 1963 through 2009, beginning with the Hartnell and Troughton years. If you have any curiosity about the classic series at all, no matter how many stories you've actually seen, you won't regret snapping up a copy. Here's why.
(Many thanks to the Twitterfolk.)
BONUS: My full-length interview with Rob and Toby is on The Doctor Who Podcast #53.
-
2MTL 177: Timeless Doctor, Mortal Friends
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 21 secondsCan a time traveler ever truly leave his companions and acquaintances behind? After all, the Doctor "is" friends with Winston Churchill even though Churchill's long dead! Thoughts about the mystical — except in the Doctor's own case — connections between all times and places lie within. (This one ran a little long; sorry!)
-
2MTL 176: "The End of the World" Two-minute Throwback
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 2 minutes and 52 secondsResolved: "The End of the World" was the most important Series One episode to Doctor Who's breakout success in 2005. When you have a strong opening, the follow-up had better be a killer, and it was.
-
2MTL 175: "My" Doctor Is Not a "Bloke"
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 11 secondsIn which the second extra scene in the Series 5 box set, in which Amy grills the Doctor about his past companions, rings a touch false to your humble correspondent.
-
2MTL 174: The Series 5 Box Set Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 13 secondsDespite a few areas where a little extra effort would have gone a long way, Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series is a worthy addition to your shelf-ful of Blu-rays and DVDs. Here's a review of the upcoming release (November 8 in the U.K., November 9 in North America).
Another take: Michael's Tin Dog Podcast 142.
-
2MTL 173: "Death of the Doctor," Resonating Concrete, and Knowing Your Modern Doctors
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 9 seconds"Rose, I'm trying to resonate concrete." Sometimes, the Doctor is tinkering with something he can't take his attention from, which traps him in a revealing conversation. It's a scripting strategy that RTD and Steven Moffat have used since 2005, most recently in "Death of the Doctor," and it's worked to great effect in revealing what makes the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Doctors tick.
-
2MTL 172: Top Gear meets Doctor Who in "Max Warp"
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 6 secondsRight there at the intersection of the Venn diagram between the gearheads and the Whovians is Big Finish's Eighth Doctor Adventure, "Max Warp." Does this Top Gear parody spin out or catch fire?
Another take: The Flashing Blade Podcast 1-38.
-
2MTL 171: "Rose" Two-minute Throwback
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 33 secondsBeginning an occasional subset of 2MTL podcasts, in which I give a two-minute (more or less, time's a relative dimension and all that) review of Doctor Who episodes since 2005. We begin with "Rose," perhaps the only episode in which we got a fair look at the Ninth Doctor.
-
2MTL 170: Nostalgia, the Split Series, and Comics, Oh My
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 0 secondsThree topics for you today: A potential bonus for the U.S. thanks to the split 2011 season, new comics from Tony Lee and Paul Cornell, and a look at the curious case of classic-series nostalgia among new-series fans.
-
2MTL 169: BBC Week Finale plus Shaun Lyon of Gallifrey One
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 18 minutes and 33 secondsPART THE FIRST: The wrap-up to BBC Week, with a look at the possible global future of Doctor Who. PART THE SECOND: Shaun Lyon, head of the Gallifrey One convention, talks about the new developments for Gally 22 in February — the hotel has run out of convention-rate rooms, but there are plenty of other options if you're heading to Los Angeles.
-

Toby's been a great friend of the podcast, having been interviewed a few times and contributing a review of "The Big Bang" for 2MTL. Be sure to see him perform "Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf" at Chicago TARDIS if you can!
-

Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 6 minutes and 39 secondsBBC Week continues, with five-year expatriate professor Mark Goodacre, the Resident Alien, talking about his concern over the BBC and drawing a parallel with those dark Doctor Who years that began in 1989. PLUS: A bonus spoiler section at the end, regarding certain revelations from the "Death of the Doctor" Sarah Jane Adventures screening!
-

Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 25 secondsWho Fix co-founder, Tachyon TV co-conspirator, and video and new media professor (wait, that sounds terribly legitimate) Neil Perryman fixes blame for Dimensions in Time while making some best-case and worst-case predictions for Doctor Who's future. This is Day 2 of BBC Week on 2MTL.
Next up: Mark Goodacre, the Resident Alien, with an expat's perspective on the BBC and Doctor Who.
-
2MTL 165: BBC's Under Pressure; How's Doctor Who?
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 10 secondsToday kicks off a one-week series of Two-minute Time Lord Podcasts exploring the relationship of Doctor Who and the BBC, an institution with an increasingly cloudy future. While Doctor Who is in no immediate danger, BBC budgets continue to be cut and the license fee is under attack.
What might it mean for the long-term future of Doctor Who? Would changes to the BBC affect its most popular drama?
Find out more about BBC Week on 2MTL on today's podcast, and come back for the rest of the week for thoughts from three guest contributors from the U.K.: Neil Perryman, Mark Goodacre and Simon Harries.
-
2MTL 164: Censorship and Free Expression in Doctor Who
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 33 secondsA few days after the U.S.'s Banned Books Week, I explore the ways censorship and free expression have been tackled within the range of Doctor Who video, audio and print, with the help of many suggestions from my friends on Twitter and Facebook. When censorship's come up in a Doctor Who story, how simplistic has it been?
Next week: a special week of programming with some special guests taking different perspectives on a special topic. I think it'll be special. I hope you'll like it.
-
2MTL 163: Jumping into the Vortex (My Talk With Carolina Who)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 22 minutes and 26 secondsThe lovely folks at the Raleigh Doctor Who Meetup Group invited me to speak at their third annual banquet last Saturday, and co-organizer Brad Gillespie kindly recorded it on his Flip camera. I talk about why I started 2MTL ("shiny, happy spite"), returning to Doctor Who fandom after falling away, and why Doctor Who is a better Star Trek than Star Trek ever was. But first, there's a quick disclaimer about my thoughts on fezzes and fans in 2MTL 162.
-
2MTL 162: The Convention of a Thousand Fezzes?
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 7 secondsIn which I explore my misgivings about the Fezzing of Los Angeles, with a carefully applied corrective.
-
2MTL 161: That McGann Guy Could Be a Good Guest Star
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 22 secondsA little while back, I noticed a flurry of activity in the ol' Twitter feed, campaigning for Paul McGann's return as the Eighth Doctor in the new series. If it could be done, should it? I think so, because there's one completely unique quality to the Eighth Doctor that Steven Moffat could exploit the heck out of. And that is….
-
2MTL 160: Time Differential Shorted Out for Classic DVD Releases
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 14 secondsShall we take a moment to revel in, or even squee over, the news that we're getting accelerated and synchronized classic Doctor Who DVD releases in North America, Australia and New Zealand? Indeed we shall.
Ahem.
Squee!
-
2MTL 159: I'm Grumpy About Mitchell Being Grumpy About Doctor Who
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 54 secondsResolved: There's absolutely nothing wrong with Doctor Who being made for kids AND adults, regardless of what comedian David Mitchell says. I'm more worked up about kids' properties being taken over BY adults, such as The Transformers, than about adults sharing in the enjoyment of a program that appeals to all ages.
-
2MTL 158: Series 6 and Series 7 in 2011? Madness!
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 2 minutes and 52 secondsAs widely reported, Steven Moffat announced at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh TV Festival 2010 that rather than a single 13-episode series of Doctor Who in 2011, we'll get two shorter series in the spring and fall. Related pros, cons, speculation and unreasonable demands lie within!
-

Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 7 secondsTwo minutes of the old compare-and-contrast game: just how similar are these two "companion's boyfriend" characters?
-
2MTL 156: Notes on River Song
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 7 secondsMy better half takes the controls of the TARDIS to reflect on River Song — and thinks that the payoff to the character's mystery will have to be huge.
-
2MTL 155: "Time Dilation" Interview with Hurricane Who's Jarrod Cooper
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 16 minutes and 40 secondsLast April revealed some major challenges for the Hurricane Who convention, with some guests reporting that they had not yet been compensated for their October appearance and were unable to contact convention head Jarrod Cooper. (I reported on these events, which were first made public on the Gallifrey Base forum, in 2MTL #125.)
In this podcast, Jarrod calls in for an extended interview in which we discuss what happened, his efforts to satisfy Hurricane Who's obligations, and his hopes for the convention's future.

2MTL 153: Subscribing to "The Four Doctors"
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 17 secondsBig Finish's next subscriber exclusive is a doozy: "The Four Doctors." Not just for the multi-Doctor goodness, but also because it is planned to be PERMANENTLY exclusive to subscribers. Is this a good idea?
-

Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 5 minutes and 8 secondsJust a few weeks later, it's time to briefly take stock of Series 5's shortcomings and strengths. Spoiler: I can't wait for Series 6.

-
2MTL 150: The Doctor's Top Ten Kisses, Part Two
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 5 minutes and 20 secondsConcluding our countdown from 2MTL #149, we look at the more substantial, more meaningful story moments that involved the Doctor getting a little closer to the people he encountered — with a guest appearance from someone whose shoes fit particularly well.
-
2MTL 149: The Doctor's Top Ten Kisses, Part One
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 25 secondsWe don't know that EVERY classic incarnation of The Doctor was averse to being physical with his companions, but we've seen that ever since Survival went off the air he's become a LOT more touchy-feely while the cameras are rolling. Herewith, ranked on the bases of consistent characterization, plot advancement, dramatic effect and significance to the Doctor Who story, is part one of our rundown of the Doctor's osculatory adventures.
-
2MTL 148: Plan B for Watching Doctor Who Internationally
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 25 secondsFor about as long as I've been podcasting, I've been on the warpath seeking the international release of Doctor Who episodes as close to the BBC One airdate as possible. I'm forced to admit that may not be practical most of the time for smaller networks such as BBC America.
So here's my Modest Proposal for Plan B: more-expensive premium downloads of the episodes as soon as they've aired on BBC One, before they hit the international networks. Give a listen for the details, and let me know what you think.
-
2MTL 147: Revisiting "Vincent and the Doctor"
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 4 secondsWhile the U.K. suffers the beginning of the Long Night Without Doctor Who, the U.S. and Canada have only gotten around to "Vincent and the Doctor," very much an outlier among the whole of Series 5. Thoughts about character development, starry nights and Fandom Wars (TM) within!
-
