Two-minute Time Lord
- Description:
- Two-minute Time Lord is a commentary podcast about the BBC ' s popular family science fiction program, Doctor Who. We ' ll try to keep this context in mind as we review episodes, comment on the news of the moment, and otherwise pontificate: Doctor Who is not FOR a thirtysomething podcaster. It ' s for that nine-year-old behind the sofa. But his or her mum and dad have been invited along for the ride, as are those of us who were kids when Peter Davison first picked up a cricket bat. And we ' ll keep it to two minutes, because we ' re ALL in a hurry.

Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 38 secondsOur Series 9 reviews begin with a confession, a pre-credits turnaround, a comparison to "The End of Time" (That'll enrage my friends at Radio Free Skaro!), and a bit of bet-hedging!
-

-
2MTL 383: Pouring One Out for the New Paradigm Daleks
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 41 secondsOK, so that was a great second trailer for Series 9, with loads and loads of Daleks.
Except for those guys introduced in "Victory of the Daleks."
Alas, the New Paradigm.
-
2MTL 382: Peak Doctor
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 18 secondsIt's been a couple weeks of highs (Doctor Who) and lows (politics) for the BBC. Last time I dwelled on the lows. Let's turn it around this time.
-
2MTL 381: BBC Under Attack? Toby Hadoke Helps an American Understand (Time Dilation)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 20 minutes and 39 secondsShould the BBC give up on popular commercial programming like, oh, I don't know, Doctor Who? A "green paper" to be released today reportedly calls for reconsidering the British Broadcasting Corporation's purpose, while the government plans to force the BBC to dig deep into its own pockets to fund license fees for citizens over 75.
Is this the darkest timeline? 2MTL gets a little uncharacteristically political as I talk with friend of the show Toby Hadoke about what's behind these moves and whether Strictly and Sherlock and our favorite television show might be at risk.
(Also, check out Toby's play on BBC Radio Four, The Dad Who Fell to Earth.)
-
2MTL 380: Throwback Review of "The Age of Steel"
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 17 secondsThe Doctor and companions were threatened with maximum deletion last time, which I suppose is worse than simple deletion. I bet the Doctor had a clever way out of this one that had absolutely no deus ex machina involved, right?
Well, at least "The Age of Steel" is a cool name.
-
2MTL 379: Throwback Review of "Rise of the Cybermen"
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 13 secondsIf you were a classic fan who was on Team Cyberman rather than Team Dalek, this episode was long overdue. But was "Rise of the Cybermen" a proper re-introduction of the classic villains? Or were there too many stompy missteps out of the gate?
-
2MTL 378: Paging Pertwee
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 0 seconds2MTL comes out of a weeks-long retirement at a time when it would appear it would be easy enough to bring back the Third Doctor…
-
2MTL 377: (Not) Daydreaming of Being the Doctor
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 0 secondsWhy would a man-child geek culture hound, who has immersed himself in your Star Treks and Star Wars and Jason of Star Commands as a child, dreaming of being those characters and living in those worlds, become obsessed to the point of podcasting about a character, the Doctor, whom he absolutely cannot imagine being?
Asking for a friend.
-
2MTL 376: Torchwood Returns
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 22 secondsIt was big news, even for Big Finish: Torchwood and Captain Jack Harkness are back. The producers are holding their cards close, so you know what that means: rampant speculation and bucket-listing from your humble host!
-
2MTL 375: Titan Comics and the Forgotten Doctor
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 15 secondsThere was a time, you know. A time when Jack Harkness had never died. Let's go back to the time of the Forgotten Doctor, courtesy of Titan Comics.
-
2MTL 374: "The Stone Rose" Revisited
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsMy The Audio Guide to Babylon 5 cohost, occasional 2MTL contributor and spouse, Shannon, returns with a review of the recently reissued The Stone Rose by Jacqueline Rayner — but does she do so with Rose-colored glasses?
-
2MTL 373: "The Girl in the Fireplace" Throwback Review
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 34 seconds"The Girl in the Fireplace" is a glimpse into the future: Steven Moffat's second Doctor Who story pretty much establishes the format that the show will follow when he takes over as showrunner and casts Smith, Gillan and Darvill. Plus, we revisit a 2MTL topic from 2009 and marvel at the entire cast's relational flexibility, and talk about the other John Byrne.
-

Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 21 minutes and 43 secondsPaul Cornell has a dream project with Titan Comics: a crossover event with all three stars of their ongoing DOCTOR WHO series! It's early yet, so Paul is circumspect about the plot, but you can find out who his artistic collaborator will be and discover the tone of this highly anticipated team-up of the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors. 2MTL 371: Conventional Wisdom
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 6 secondsReflections on conventions in general and Gallifrey One in particular: why they matter and how I hope to make the most of them this year.
Special thanks to all of the people with positive feedback on my segment for Radio Free Skaro Live!
-
2MTL 370: Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of "Rose"
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 10 minutes and 48 secondsFrom Gallifrey One, here's my celebration of the 10th anniversary of the airing of "Rose." Thanks to my friends at Radio Free Skaro for inviting me to share the stage once more for their Friday morning live show, "Behind the Magic".
-
2MTL 369: "School Reunion" Throwback Review
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 2 secondsIt's been a LONG time since we've done a Throwback Review. So let's pick up where we left off: with an insufferable TARDIS couple realizing that things are just a little bit complicated, and a heaping helping of nostalgia from the Archetypal Companion and the Shooty Dog Thing.
-
2MTL 368: The Last "Last Christmas" Panel (Time Dilation)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 31 minutes and 35 secondsIt's still Christmas, darn it! And the Doctor Who series isn't over yet! At least that's what I'm trying to convince myself, by inviting National Public Radio's Petra Mayer and Doctor Who: Verity!'s Tansy Rayner Roberts over to 2MTL to talk one last time about Last Christmas, Steven Moffat and Clara Oswald.
-
2MTL 367: "Last Christmas" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 26 secondsJolly old St. Nick? Radagast to the Doctor's Gandalf. Dreamcrabs? Scary. Mystery North Pole outpost? More and less than it seems. "Last Christmas"? Several levels of delightful.
-
2MTL 366: Cybermen Intervention
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 28 secondsSure, the Cybermen looked impressive in the Series 8 finale. But were they sufficiently Cybermenny? Is it time to rethink the Cybermen, or better yet, take a break and bring them back to first principles?
-
2MTL 365: The All-Star Series 8 and Beyond Panel (Time Dilation)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 1 hours, 7 minutes and 30 secondsIt's a Time Dilation episode of 2MTL, in which the "Two-minute" part becomes a colossal lie! Joining me in reviewing Series 8 and predicting Doctor Who's future are:
- Lynne Thomas of Verity! and Uncanny Magazine!
- Kyle Anderson of Doctor Who: The Writer's Room and Nerdist.com!
- Graeme Burk of Reality Bomb and Who's 50: The 50 Doctor Who Stories to Watch Before You Die!
- Mark Goodacre of the NT Pod and one of my favorite 2MTL episodes ever, 2MTL 316: What IS "Doctor Who Canon" Anyway???
-
2MTL 364: "Death in Heaven" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 55 secondsBest. Moffat. Finale. Ever.
Best. Moffat. Series. Ever.
And yet, somehow, I'm not sure how much more I can take!
-
2MTL 363: "Dark Water" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 37 secondsSometimes the BBC can't help but spoil the surprise. Sometimes the reveals aren't all that revealing. Sometimes you dismiss the obvious because it's too obvious. Sometimes it doesn't matter, because the episode is brilliant and even wickedly funny because there's no surprise.
-
2MTL 362: "In the Forest of the Night" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 12 secondsSeries 8's more unhurried pacing reaches its apex with the "lyrical and beautiful," per Steven Moffat, "In the Forest of the Night." Did the episode hold interest? Did The Doctor and Clara resemble themselves from just a couple of episodes ago? Well….
-
2MTL 361: "Flatline" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 33 secondsYes, yes and more yes, as this supposedly "Doctor-Lite" episode gives us both Clara-as-the-Doctor and The-Doctor-as-someone-who's-thinking-he's-doing-his-job-too-well.
-
2MTL 360: "Mummy on the Orient Express" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 42 seconds"Mummy on the Orient Express" does what it says on the tin, and. while not a "romp" as such, it's perfectly timed after last week's angst and controversy.
-
2MTL 359: "Kill the Moon" NOT Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 5 minutes and 55 secondsSix things make a podcast: "Kill the Moon" defied my attempt to do a simple, cohesive review. So here's an extended series of impressions the episode left on me. (Thanks to K and R for kibitzing.)
-
2MTL 358: "The Caretaker" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 29 secondsA rubbish brown coat (not the legendary Tennant overcoat, sadly, that would have been funny) is a paper-thin disguise for a Doctor who is a bit of a rubbish caretaker. While he endangers Coal Hill School to fire Jimmy Vee into space, Clara makes some rubbish attempts to keep her two worlds separate. The episode? Not at all rubbish. But it's time to talk about Clara, and how the Doctor and showrunner are treating her.
-
2MTL 357: "Time Heist" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 6 secondsAs a bank robber, the Doctor makes a surprisingly good bank robber. And Stephen Thompson turns in a story that is no "Curse of the Black Spot." I solemnly promise not to cite "Leverage" again this season.
-
2MTL 356: "Listen!" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 20 secondsThe latest in Steven Moffat's series of biological functionally-titled episodes, "Listen!" is entirely about hiding behind the sofa, and why we do that, and what greatness the fear that drives it might lead us to. And, to my great surprise, we get a profound look underneath the Doctor's mask.
-
2MTL 355: "Robot of Sherwood" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 6 secondsIf Robin Hood had assaulted the Doctor with a quarterstaff, with a full-on "Ho! Ha Ha! Guard! Turn! Parry! Dodge! Spin! Ha! Thrust!", I perhaps would have bought in.
-
2MTL 354: "Into the Dalek" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 24 secondsSpoiler: The Daleks are back.
Spoiler: The Twelfth Doctor is not especially warm and fuzzy.
Spoiler: There's a lot of pew-pew-pew and boom-boom-boom.
Spoiler: For the second week in a row, it's not the A-plot that has me so excited about Series 8.
-
2MTL 353: "Deep Breath" Reviewed
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 37 secondsPeter Capaldi delivers. Of that, there was no doubt. What else does "Deep Breath" have going for it, and does it measure up to Steven Moffat's first crack at introducing a Doctor?
-
2MTL 352: The Fate of the Impossible Girl
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 27 secondsSo the tabloids think that season is Clara's swan song. I'm not ready to see her go, but…
Guess what haters – Clara is the best companion, second maybe only to Donna.
— Kyle Anderson (@FunctionalNerd) August 16, 2014
…really, Kyle Anderson of Nerdist.com? Let's not go quite that far. Yet.
-
2MTL 351: The Gallery of the Cleverdumb
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 0 secondsThe Two-minute Time Lord Podcast will have no truck with the "so bad it's good" notion. Instead, we celebrate the notion of "cleverdumb" storytelling: meticulous in certain aspects, and gleefully and purposefully washing its hands of others. Exhibit A: the US series Leverage. Exhibits that follow: certain episodes of our favorite family sci-fi drama–but why are there so few "cleverdumb" Doctor Whos?
(One guess who inspired the title for this podcast.)
-
2MTL 350: Peter Capaldi in Wonder Woman's Armor
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 59 secondsA clickbait headline hurtles toward Ye Olde Compare-and-Contrast between the promised grim-'n'-gritty Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the widely inferred darkness of the Twelfth Doctor.
-
2MTL 349: More Than 2,000 Years in the TARDIS?
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 1 secondTwo thousand years! That's how old The Doctor is now, as stated by the Twelfth in the latest trailer and as implied in his predecessor's swan song, "The Time of the Doctor." That's a pretty huge leap from roughly 900 years old at the start of Steven Moffat's showrunnership. Is it a fair leap when you consider the assumed ages of his predecessors? Or is "fairness" even a fair issue?
-
2MTL 348: Oops.
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 45 secondsOn the power of the (leaked) written word (and the importance of Wheaton's Law)…
-
2MTL 347: A Tale of Two Action Figures, or Why the War Doctor Doesn't Count
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 15 secondsWith apologies, the War Doctor just doesn't seem "real" enough to warrant a space on my shelf among the ordinally-numbered Doctor action figures in my collection. As magnificent as John Hurt was, why am I reluctant to include him in the tribe?
-
2MTL 346: Capoptimism
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 53 secondsHerewith, three reasons why old-school fandom is buzzing with such excitement for Peter Capaldi, when the historic pattern has been more guarded.
-
2MTL 345: Rebecca Moore and the Famous Infographic (Time Dilation)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 12 minutes and 42 secondsRebecca Moore and her fellow undergraduates at BYU-Idaho did a little study this year about female characters' representation in post-2005 DOCTOR WHO. You might have heard about it! I talk with Rebecca about what prompted the study, and what happened when her teammate Joseph Struhs's infographic got noticed on Tumblr and by The Guardian and went viral.
For other takes on the study, check out Verity! episode 43 and Charlie Jane Anders's io9 article, "Why the Bechdel Test is More Important Than You Realize."
-
2MTL 344: Something New?
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 27 secondsAt the Hay Festival, showrunner Steven Moffat promised that the new season of Doctor Who will be radically different. Does casting Peter Capaldi alone make that true?
-
2MTL 343: The Hugo Rorschach Test
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 24 secondsLast month the Hugo nominees were revealed and thankfully, the controversies found in other award categories were absent in the Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form) category. Which Doctor Who-related work, including the non-episodes AN ADVENTURE IN SPACE AND TIME and THE FIVE(ISH) DOCTORS REBOOT deserve the nod? And, these days, what does a Hugo really mean?
(Sorry I've been away; launching The Audio Guide to Babylon 5 with Verity!'s Erika Ensign and my wife Shannon has been a bit of a distraction!)
-
2MTL 342: A (Character) Study in Clara
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 58 secondsA departure for 2MTL: why pontificate about a character when I can approach it fictionally? Here's a character study about Clara Oswald, and what might have been beneath her blurted confession in "The Time of the Doctor."
-
2MTL 341: "Tooth and Claw" Two-minute Throwback
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 47 secondsEight years ago we saw a new side to the Doctor and his companion, who reached stratospheric levels of self-satisfaction. Was Queen Victoria right about what awful people they were? Are a smug Doctor and Rose worse than, say, a Doctor trying to brain a caveman or strangle a companion?
-
2MTL 340: ReMastered
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 22 secondsWe made it through the Matt Smith era without the return of the Doctor's arch-nemesis, the Master. A couple of weeks ago, the rumors started to circulate. Is he back to face Peter Capaldi? And should he wear a new face?
-
2MTL 339: DOCTOR WHO's Annual Checkup with Keith Topping and Jason Snell (Time Dilation)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 27 minutes and 34 secondsIn this Time-Dialated, Gallifrey One-facilitated interview show, two popular media observers with impeccable DOCTOR WHO credentials — Yer Actual Keith Telly Topping and The Incomparable's Jason Snell — help me look outside the fishbowl to see just how well our favorite television series is doing in the wider world of SF fans and TV viewers.
-
2MTL 338: Paul Cornell and Gary Russell at Gallifrey One
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 38 minutes and 53 secondsIn our first of two extended Time Dilation episodes of 2MTL featuring interviews from Gallifrey One, we hear from two well-known Doctor Who pros that have launched new phases of their careers. Paul Cornell talks about his novels London Falling and the upcoming The Severed Streets, redefining Marvel's Wolverine, and IDW's "The Girl Who Loved Doctor Who." Gary Russell reflects on his long history with Doctor Who, and how he's carried that to Australia as a series producer for Planet 55 Studios.
