In past episodes of the podcast we've considered various TARDIS teams being placed into stories from other eras of Doctor Who and how they would fare. In this episode, we turn that concept on its head somewhat and each come to the table with a Doctor Who story from each era that we think could ONLY be of its era and not be made in a different era with a different team.

Before then, we also talk some recent Doctor Who news, including Ncuti Gatwa confirming he will complete at least two series of the show; Season 20 comes to Blu-ray; Target novelisations of the 60th anniversary stories; and Mark Gatiss comments on how he would play the Doctor.

  • INTERVIEW: Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who

    26 June 2023 (11:37am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 28 minutes and 1 second

    Direct Podcast Download

With a new non-fiction Doctor Who book on the horizon, this time looking at the creation of Doctor Who back in 1963, Rob sits down for the third time in the life of the podcast with friend of the show and the book's author, Paul Hayes.

Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who is available from Ten Acre Films on July 24, 2023.

    = = =

‘Fresh and compelling… As definitive an account of those early years as I have read’ Toby Hadoke

When Doctor Who began on Saturday November 23 1963, few could have guessed that it marked the start of perhaps the most extraordinary story in the history of BBC television drama. But there had already been another story, equally extraordinary yet unseen, leading up to the transmission of that opening episode – the creation of the series itself.

Pull to Open explores the behind-the-scenes saga of Doctor Who in 1963, when a chain of events at the BBC brought together a disparate group to launch what would become one of British TV’s best-loved and most successful programmes. It’s the story of why these events happened; the BBC creative culture into which Doctor Who was born; how television drama was made in the early 1960s; and an insight into the people who started this epic journey.

Drawing from the BBC’s written archives and new interviews with some of those who were there, including Doctor Who’s first director Waris Hussein and original co-star Carole Ann Ford, Pull to Open is a detailed and comprehensive account of the programme’s path to the screen. Immerse yourself in the world of BBC Television in 1963 and discover how a series which was almost cancelled before a single episode was shown survived to cement its place in the popular culture of a nation.

    Foreword by Toby Hadoke

  • Mark Gatiss

    25 June 2023 (2:09am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 1 hours, 32 minutes and 57 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

From time to time, the Doctor Who Show devotes an episode to a series writer. A great chance to talk about numerous diverse episodes, sometimes from totally different eras of the show, only related by the name on the script.

In today's episode... Mark Gatiss. Possibly the most 'Marmite' of all Doctor Who writers, especially in the modern era. Fans tend to love and hate Gatiss' stories... but strangely can never agree which stories are meant to go in which column!

Stories covered in this episode include:

    The Unquiet Dead
    The Idiot’s Lantern
    Victory of the Daleks
    Night Terrors
    Cold War
    The Crimson Horror
    Robot of Sherwood
    Sleep No More
    The Empress of Mars

Plus a number of 'extras' including Gatiss' New Adventure novels, Nightshade, and St. Anthony's Fire, and the 50th anniversary special, An Adventure in Space and Time.

Before then we also talk some recent Doctor Who news, including new cast members for the upcoming Ncuti Gatwa era; Davo's wife has written a book; and are there some missing episodes materialising from the ether in time for the 60th?

  • Dave’s Big Day Out

    31 May 2023 (2:07am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 1 hours, 10 minutes and 28 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

On May 13, 2023, our Dave travelled up to Sydney to attend the Sophie Aldred fan event, run by our fellow Antipodean podcasters, The Sirens of Audio.

In addition to being there to support the return of small, fan-run events in this country, Dave was also tasked by the hosts to conduct an on-stage interview with Doctor Who author, Jon Blum. This was originally to be a joint interview with Jon and his wife, the celebrated Doctor Who author, Kate Orman, however Kate was unable to attend on the day.

This podcast is a half-hour discussion between Rob and Dave about the day in general, followed by about half an hour of audio from the Job Blum chat. As we mention on the podcast, the audio of the Blum interview isn't up to our usual podcast standards, but we're sure you'd rather hear a version of the chat than nothing at all, so we include it here.

    Enjoy!

  • Synopsis - The Shadow of Weng-Chiang

    26 April 2023 (2:07am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 15 minutes and 18 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

Our episode on April 30, 2023 features the Virgin Missing Adventure, The Shadow of Weng-Chiang, as its main topic.

In the past when we've done novels, we've included a blow-by-blow summary of the novel, so our listeners are across the story. The theory being that far less listeners have read all the Virgin or BBC novels, and may need the information.

This practice has been appreciated, but has also blown out episode run-times. Given that not every listener even needs the summary, we put our heads together to come up with a way to provide a summary but not blow out the episode.

And here it is... a standalone summary of The Shadow of Weng-Chiang. If you've never read the novel before, or you have but feel like a refresher is in order, this 15m podcast will tell you what happens in the novel, from start to finish. Have at it.

See you on Sunday with our Shadow of Weng-Chiang episode, where you'll hear our actual thoughts on the story in question!

Featuring input from Anthony Carroll (squared), Chris March, Richard Smith, Terry Hayward, Jeremy Bonwick, and Neilers C, a team of Doctor Who fans weigh in on a letter to Doctor Who Magazine #238 from May, 1996 on the topic of...

    SEX!

Yes, hanky panky, coitus, relations, lovemaking... whatever you want to call it. Does it ruin Doctor Who? Fans certainly thought so with the TV movie hurtling at them back in 1996. Have our attitudes changed, or is it still a bit... icky?

In every era of Doctor Who there are stories which, for whatever reason, aren't as well remembered as others. They're the ones you skip over when you're browsing your DVDs, wondering what you should slip on. Maybe it's because of other, "better" episodes in the same season. Maybe it's received fan wisdom putting you off. Maybe you had a genuinely bad experience with the story in the past.

Tonight, however, we turn our mind to stories that are underrated and which you might not be too keen on choosing for your viewing pleasure... yet you should. We blaze through all 13 Doctors, presenting 26 choices for your perusal.

Before then, of course, we also talk some recent Doctor Who news, including details of how long Ncuti Gatwa's first series will be, Christmas specials for years to come, and the sad passing of legendary series writer, Chris Boucher.

  • Call Out: Ever want to be on Primary Sources?

Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 44 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

When our final episode of Primary Sources went out on September 18 this year, Rob talked about the idea of some special episodes at a future date.

Well folks, the time has arrived.

In this short podcast, Rob will explain his concept and read you a letter from DWM #238 from the 8th of May, 1996. Your mission is to reply to it.

Pick up your recording device of choice and riff back to Rob about the letter he read. Try to be concise (maybe jot down your main points before you record), and try not to go beyond 4-5 minutes, maximum. Most importantly, have fun with it!

Get your submissions in by December 3 - that's a week from now - to be sure of making it onto the episode, which will go out on our feed later in December.

Looking forward to wherever the letter takes you...!

Send your submissions, ideally in MP3 format, to hello@thedwshow.net

  • Interview - Doctor Who Am I

    6 November 2022 (5:07am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 19 minutes and 28 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

Doctor Who Am I is described by IMDb as a documentary where, "an infamous Doctor Who screenwriter is reluctantly dragged back into the American Whoniverse, in this funny and moving documentary about finding family in the unlikeliest of places." It launched in the UK in late October and will be available on home media in some territories later this very month.

But did you know that, on the podcast which gave birth to the Doctor Who Show - Who Wars - we actually interviewed that screenwriter (Matthew Jacobs)? And that he spoke at length about the Doctor Who Am I project?

Yes, on August 9, 2015 we ran a 40m interview with Matthew, touching on Doctor Who Am I, The Emperor's New Groove, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Star Wars, and more. All conducted by Kate - @kamiduu.

What we have made here is an edit of that interview, basically cutting more than 50% out (so if you want to hear him talk Disney, Young Indy, George Lucas, etc, you will need to seek out the original episode), and we're left with a very Doctor Who and Doctor Who Am I oriented chat.

Seven years have gone by since this interview was conducted, but we think you'll find the chat relevant and a great preamble to seeing the doco!

What a week! It started with us doing a hot take episode on the final Jodie Whittaker story, The Power of the Doctor, and we thought this episode following it would be a bit fluffy and frothy and very relaxed.

Nek minnit... we get the news that Disney+ has secured the worldwide rights to screen Doctor Who outside of the UK, starting in 2023. International fandom blew up, particularly here in Australia. Dave was called to appear on a couple of mainstream radio shows to talk about it. We play one at the end of the ep!

So while this episode is about actors who have played the Doctor in other roles, we also have a lot of discussion on both the trailer for the three upcoming specials, and the Disney+ deal. Three listener emails round out the episode.

Hope you enjoy the show! Contact us anytime, hello@theDWshow.net
