We got a bit of the fit of the giggles in the DWP Campervan this week when we realised we had reached the lofty heights of Episode 150 of the Doctor Who Podcast.  So it seemed only apt that we talk about comedy and its relationship with our favourite program, Doctor Who.

And who better than to talk about comedy, but a comedian?  Long time contributor to the show Ashley Frieze finally takes up a pink vinyl seat in the Campervan alongside Trev, James, Tom and Leeson and talks about what has made us laugh in Doctor Who.  We also discuss comedians who have made the leap from standup to Doctor Who as well as comedy gold and misfires.

Ian and Michele also join the fun and discuss – The Horns of Nimon – proper story or panto?

Ah, the Cybermen. Their convoluted history was neatly sidestepped by Russell T. Davies when he introduced parallel-universe counterparts in Series 2 — but have those Cybermen been quietly ushered off the stage?

In this week’s episode we take an “evening newscast” look at things as we review the remarkable Torchwood: Children of Earth mini-series. We go almost step by step through the monumental television event that changed the series and mood of the Whonivers on the whole.

Also, a bit of serendipity, (or perhaps we just channeled our inner fortune tellers powers) as Dr. Phil points out that CERN is about to announce the Higgs boson or “God Particle” has been found. A bit spooky, huh?

Plus, a look at other things making news in Doctor Who including some speculation on a possible start date for Series 7.

San Diego Comic-Con talk, BFI premieres, and several new toys that will be filling the toy boxes and bookcases  of child and middle-aged nerd alike. And to top it off, we present our commentary of The War Machines, the 1966 serial that introduced us to the character of "Doctor Who" and a rather far fetched notion of computers connecting to each other across the world into some sort of an international network. There's nothing quite so dated as our vision of the future, is there?

However, Tony was late to the recording as he hadn't had his dinner (and you don't want to be in the same room as Tony when he's hungry) so Paul and Phil cracked on with the news without him, which took all of 5 minutes as it was a very slow week for news.
Eventually Tony turned up and they got on with the task in hand. In this episode, you will find Smurfs, little known facts about Paul McGann, Popeye The Sailor Man and the hazards of transporting free range chickens.

You may already have this. If you do, sorry. If you don't... "I always find that violent exercise makes me hungry. Don't you agree?" Yes, Gallifrey's very own silver-haired and rather wrinkly James Bond is at it again in 1972's salty six-part saga, The Sea Devils. Jim and Martin marvel as the Doctor frolics above, on and below the sea, Jo fights, frets and flies a hovercraft and the Master shows off most of his wardrobe (string vests strangely absent). Mr Creosote rolls in from Whitehall and eats everything in his path, Trenchard bores the hind legs off a donkey and Cap'n Hart offs an alarming amount of amphibians. All that with copious sandwiches thrown in. Who could ask for more from Who?

The Dying Days of the Twentieth Century

On the Mare Sirenum, British astronauts are walking on the surface of Mars for the first time in over twenty years. The National Space Museum in London is the venue for a spectacular event where the great and the good celebrate a unique British achievement.

In Ardisham, Kent, the most dangerous man in Britain has escaped from custody while being transported by helicopter. In Whitehall, the new Home Secretary is convinced that there is a plot brewing to overthrow the government. In west London, MI5 agents shut down a publishing company that got too close to the top secret organisation known as UNIT. And, on a state visit to Washington, the Prime Minister prepares to make a crucial speech, totally unaware that dark forces are working against him.

As the eighth Doctor and Professor Bernice Summerfield discover, all these events are connected. However, soon all will be overshadowed.

This time, the Doctor is already too late.

The novel is unique in that it is the final Virgin New Adventure before they lost their license to publish Doctor Who books. It's doubly unique in that it is the only New Adventure featuring the Eighth Doctor, so it's a respite from the machinations and manipulations of Doctor Seven.

This is the third novel we've read by Lance Parkin (The Infinity Doctors and, of course more recently, Cold Fusion), and we both agree that he's an ambitious writer. We're looking forward to see what he can do with a story that is, on its face, not dissimilar to a Torchwood episode.

The opportunity arrived for another of my famous or should that be infamous audio diary episodes, the occasion this time was the fifth anniversary of the Staggering Stories podcast. This basically led to a mad adventure in the Staggering Mobile, not sure which one of us was Scooby Doo, all the way to Cardiff and a few other places too. Had we all remembered how far away Wales is some of us wouldn't have had such an adventurous journey home!
