348: Stick With Me Here, But John Cena as the Master (Survivors of the Flux)
Trust Your DoctorTrust Your Doctor normally has insane ideas, but this time they’ve gone too far.
We’re rapidly closing in on the end of possibly the whirl windiest season of Doctor Who ever written. It’s bizarre, it’s amazing, it’s huge. It’s everything you ever wanted from a Doctor Who story. Or at least, that’s what the boys over at Trust Your Doctor think. I mean, really, what else could it be? It’s Survivors of the Flux, written by Chris Chibnall and aired on November 28, 2021.
Show-notes:
0:26: Didn’t look up how to pronounce Azhur Saleem’s name. Sorry.
1:35: Here’s your Spotify wrapped! How did I do that? Well. Magicians never reveal their secrets. (Editor’s note: he just linked directly to it.)
2:22: You can actually listen to our Revolution of the Daleks episode over here.
3:17: Check out our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast, and help it do even better than any of our currently running podcasts.
4:00: It’s actually Justin underscore does underscore art: @justin_does_art.
6:21: Check out our other podcasts too: Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast and Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast.
5:02: You can actually see every episode of our podcasts we released in 2021 on our website, since I normally tag posts/episodes by their release year.
12:34: The word wizard has been ruined forever.
17:55: For those as interested in the behind the scenes as much as I am, here’s the BTS video from John Bishop’s twitter.
20:07: Check out the best episode of Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast: the Fred Trilogy episode.
21:40: I was shocked to discover that this tweet/instagram post was a damn month ago. Anyway, good news is I found the tweet where someone showed that Vin made himself bigger than The Rock.
27:02: Norse mythology in general is pretty fascinating, but Yggdrasil itself is one of the most interesting things in it. (Editor’s note: I have no idea why Dylan is so interested in Norse mythology all of a sudden.)
28:30: Don’t worry Fandango Movieclips is here to remind you of the fridge scene in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
36:39: I don’t remember what episode this was, probably the one we recorded the week I discovered it. Surprise, Dylan didn’t cut it out.
43:04: Worry not, we haven’t forgotten that this is an audio only medium. Here’s the shot we’re talking about.
45:58: The Killing Joke, a seminal comic classic.
53:37: I like when Kiyan says he’ll put things in the show-notes, because it means I don’t have to. (Editor’s note: was this just a random comment? I didn’t say anything to this effect around this timestamp, so whatever.)
57:33: Was this the thing the last show note was referring to? Chris Chibnall’s villain origin story? For some reason I can’t find a better quality upload of it in full anymore. There definitely used to be one on youtube.
1:03:25: I forgot where I read the US department of defense uses VHS tapes, but I can’t find any other information along this line, so it’s probably wrong.
1:05:30: We’re gonna talk about John Barrowman for a while, so I think it best to link an article that gives a good overview of the allegations against him for those who aren’t in the loop.
1:23:52: There was, I kid you not, twenty seconds of stunned silence to this revelation that I cut out.
1:26:55: “The last thing I have to say…” *looks at timestamp*
1:36:01: As promised, here’s the article from Steven’s email.
1:39:44: It must have been fun before we revealed this on the podcast to imagine that our show-notes person sometimes seemed to have multiple personalities. For a fun game, try guess who wrote this show-note.

That Which Is Missing
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, the whole world will soon end in a fiery cataclysm, which has nothing much to do with the podcast, but is probably worth mentioning at this point. Meanwhile, robots from the 1960s are wrangling about something, while an iconic love story comes to a final end. For now. Welcome to Doomsday.
Notes and links
You can find Tracy-Ann Oberman on Twitter at @TracyAnnO. She’s fabulous.
We’ve mentioned Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials before: Russell borrows from it liberally for this season’s arc. It’s an incredible series of books, soon to become a BBC television series, starring James McAvoy and Lin-Manuel Miranda. There’s even a trailer for you to enjoy.
And, of course, our regular reminder that you should read RTD’s The Writer’s Tale, which is Russell’s own account of his time running Doctor Who. Amazingly honest and insightful. A must read.
Nathan recommends reading Steven Moffat’s novelisation of The Day of the Doctor. It’s amazing.
Picks of the week
Todd
Todd is firing up his Blu-Ray player to remind himself of his childhood fear of the Cybermen. It’s Revenge of the Cybermen, which we cover in Episode 36: A Sociopathic Child.
Richard
Richard’s characteristically highbrow suggestion is The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), directed by Michael Powell and starring Roger Livesey and Deborah Kerr, who plays no less than three separate love interests throughout the film. Winston Churchill hated it, so it is definitely well worth a look.
James
James suggests the two Big Finish box sets in the Torchwood One series — Before the Fall and Machines, starring Tracy-Ann Oberman and Gareth David-Lloyd.
Nathan
Nathan wants you to spend a few hours catching up on Randomwhoness — a blog in which our friend Johnny Spandrell watches the entirety of Doctor Who in a random order, managing to find exciting new takes on each story.
Follow us
Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, James is @ohjamessellwood, Todd is @toddbeilby and Richard is @RichardLStone. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam, and the strings performance was by Jane Aubourg. You can follow the podcast on Twitter at @FTEpodcast.
We’re also on Facebook, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on iTunes, or we’ll snatch you from your everyday life, whisk you around time and space, fall in love with you, and abandon you in a parallel universe with no one to care for you apart from a vastly improved version of your entire family. We’re kind of bastards really.
And more

Redux 3: That Vague Memory of 6 Years Ago (The Monster of Peladon)
Trust Your DoctorI only have vague memories of 6 years ago apparently.
In this episode Kiyan will espouse the belief that you should watch Monster of Peladon every single day, over and over and over again until you get it. Now I don’t necessarily disagree, but I have to wonder, is that what people want us to do with The Massacre? And if so, how is this not just some sort of twisted version of stockholm syndrome? It’s Monster of Peladon, written by Brian Hayles and aired between March 23 and April 27, 1974.
Show-notes:
8:13: The basic premise of 4 to Doomsday is that some aliens are on a spaceship headed to earth and are going to wipe out humanity with a virus.
12:05: According to the Doctor Who wiki the Fourth Doctor used a sonic lance on his sonic screwdriver in Robot.
21:30: I was talking about The Aims of Discourse by James Kinneavey. You can read it at that link for free with a jstor account.
38:43: Check out Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast. We’re currently (at the time of writing this) watching Sapphire and Steel.
1:04:36: Looks like Cold Warrior is just a random tv show from 1984. I could barely find any info about it other than this wiki page and an even more threadbare imdb page.

The Magic Mavic Chen Principle
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, the Doctor and River Song get married in an episode that completely rewrites itself before our very eyes, and the eyepatch anecdote makes its triumphant return to the show. You are all cordially invited to The Wedding of River Song.
Notes and links
Richard identifies some possible inspirations for this episode, including Cloud Atlas (2004) by David Mitchell and The Master and Margarita (1967) by Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov.
Nathan mentions Steven Moffatt’s adaptation of Dracula (2020), in which two of the three episodes use the same narrative framing technique he uses in this episode, where the events of the episode start to impinge on the story being told in flashback at the start of the episode.
Steven B calls The Doctor’s Wife a “nerd-baiting title in our episode on that story, called, appropriately Nerd-Baiting Title. Nathan levels the same accusation against the title of this story.

Steven B calls The Doctor’s Wife a “nerd-baiting title in our episode on that story, called, appropriately Nerd-Baiting Title. Nathan levels the same accusation against the title of this story.

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, a quick trip to Colchester with Joe Ford and Jack Shanahan, to try on a new frock at Sanderson & Grainger before being horribly murdered. In the meantime, of course, James Corden is learning a valuable lesson about fatherhood, while the Doctor comes to terms with his impending certain death, probably. It’s Closing Time.
Notes and links
We start the episode by making a list of similarities between this story and Series 5’s The Lodger. By the most amazing coincidence, Joe and Jack joined us for the first time on our episode about The Lodger earlier this year.
No, Nathan, it’s nail polish remover, not nail polish that finishes off the Cybermen in The Moonbase. (Thanks, Brendan.)
Brendan cracks the joke that the Cybermen came from Marinus, which is actually a thing that happens (spoilers) in the Doctor Who Magazine comic The World Shapers.
Joe is right — the scene where those Cylons start singing All Along the Watchtower in Battlestar Galactica (2004) is one of the great moments in television history. No spoilers.
Team Knight Rider only ran for a single season in 1997–1998, which suggests that the cliffhanger Brendan mentions didn’t have the effect on audience figures that the creators might have been hoping for.
And finally — it’s not Brendan who cracked the code in the tag: the theory that the M in Swarm stands for Meglos comes from @joshryancarr on Twitter. At the time of publication, Flux Chapter 6 is mere hours away, and so there’s still time for this theory to be proved true. Fingers crossed.
