#232 - Coalescing on Consensus
Doctor Who: The Metebelis 2We wrap up our conversation about the Doctor Who Magazine readership story rankings with our assessment of how the Tennant, Smith, Capaldi, and Whittaker stories lined up. We comment on how fandom seems to be coalescing upon a consensus of what is the best (and worse) of the modern Doctors Who's stories. There are a few stories that we feel should be higher (and lower), but generally the order seems pretty spot on. Opening music is "I am the Doctor," composed by Murray Gold and closing music is "Thirteen," composed by Segun Akinola. We recorded this episode on 3 September 2023.

Review - The Mind Robber
In "The Mind Robber," the TARDIS is forced off course into a dimension of fiction. They encounter various fictional characters and creatures from different literary works, including Medusa, Rapunzel and Gulliver and discover they all being manipulated by The Master (not that one).
Yes, come and join Phil and Paul in the Land of Fancy, er... I mean Fiction where all things are possible if the budget allows it. Our intrepid reviewing duo tackle the televised and written formats of this story and while they find a few minor differences, what did this story really add up to? Episode 90 - The Highlanders (with Daniel Knight)
Doctor Who LiteratureThe last Doctor Who novelization published before I became I fan of the TV show, it's The Highlanders. Joining us to discuss is a guest who's visited the Culloden battlefield several times, and who actually purchased his copy of this book in the Highlands, it's Daniel Knight (@DanielKnight1973)!
Musical cues featured in this episode include The British Grenadiers and The Skye Boat Song. One particular gag in the text owes a life debt to Netflix's late lamented "The Who Was? Show".
If you enjoyed this episode, please follow, subscribe, and rate us!]
"Doctor Who – The Highlanders" features cover art by Nick Spender.

Making My Head Hurt
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastSo Doctor Who is back, doing the same old thing for another year, but this time we’re relitigating the main moral question of a thirty-year-old episode: can we kill a genocidal dictator even though he’s just a small child with a dirty face lost on a battlefield somewhere? Tom Spilsbury joins us to discuss The Magician’s Apprentice.
Notes and Links
Nathan compares the hand mines in this episode to the terrifying Gloom Spawn from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Tom and Peter mention two videos that accompany this episode. The first one is a deleted scene on Karn starring Clare Higgins as Ohila; the second one is a six-minute skit by Steven Moffat called The Doctor’s Meditation, in which the Doctor’s attempts to meditate fail because of the poor quality of the water he’s drinking and so he spends days and days getting the townsfolk to dig wells instead.

His body glows with energy, but this is no regeneration into a future form - instead, the Doctor’s past faces begin to appear as he flits haphazardly between incarnations... Staggering to his TARDIS, the Doctor sets out to solve the mystery of his 'degeneration'. Who has done this to him? How? And why? From the Earth to the stars, across an array of familiar times and places, he follows clues to retrace his steps, encountering old friends and enemies along the way. Tumbling through his lives, the Doctor must stop his degeneration before he loses himself completely... In the midst of the Time War, the Time Lords have received a communication from Falkus, the prison moon of Skaro. Its sole inmate, Davros, wishes to make them an offer. He will help them win the Time War... but only if the Doctor comes to his rescue.

Podcastica Episode 289: Image of The Fendahl OR The Rider Wait-For-It Tarot Deck
PodcasticaClassic Doctor Who! Doesn't it feel so good to be in that warm, cozy blanket? Well, there might be a few burrs in this specific blanket as Image of The Fendahl rubs us the wrong way in places. On the one hand, we're happy to see Tom Baker and Louise Jameson again, but at the same time there's almost too much going on in this story and it gets kinda dark at times...does things we're honestly surprised to see on Doctor Who!
