Welcome to the jungle! But there really aren't a lot of fun and games on the furthest charted planet in the universe as something is killing of the crew of a geology ship. As is far too often the case, The Doctor and Sarah Jane are the suspects, but the reality turns out to be far stranger with an anti-matter monster on the loose! That's right, join us on the Planet of Evil where there's an amazing jungle set!

  As if the alien Vulpreen weren’t enough, what remains of UNIT faces another formidable adversary. The mercurial Time Lord Missy is on the side of the Vulpreen, helping and encouraging them in their ambition to become the rulers not just of Earth, but of all Space and Time. 4.1 One Way or Another by John Dorney Kate leads an attack on a Vulpreen prison camp, unaware that UNIT friends are being held there. As paths converge, Kate and Osgood have different perspectives on the attack, and specific dangers to overcome. 4.2 Traitors’ Gate by Sarah Grochala Osgood is a prisoner in the Tower of London, which is now a Vulpreen base. To rescue her friend, Kate must devise a plan to raid her former headquarters. Inside the Tower, the Vulpreen are determined to access the Black Archive and the hugely dangerous alien technology it contains. How long can Osgood keep them out? 4.3 The Destiny Labyrinth by Alison Winter The UNIT team find themselves traveling through various epochs in Earth’s history. The only guide they have is working for the enemy, and the Vulpreen are hot on their heels. Help comes from a new friend, a young healer who already has a curious relationship with time. 4.4 True Nemesis by Andrew Smith Under Missy’s guiding hand, the Vulpreen are ready to strike out, to establish themselves as the new Masters of Time. UNIT’s confrontation with Missy in the depths of Portugal’s Douro Valley will decide the fate of not just the Earth but the whole Universe.

The controversy continues as An Unearthly Child remains AWOL on the BBC iPlayer, and further flashpoints occur as the Three Who Rule wildly speculate on the continued insistence of the BBC to pretend it’s still 2008 while Disney+ does whatever it’ll do in regards to airing the upcoming David Tennant specials and beyond. Plus animation, a Who exhibit at Riverside Studios, Vicki is back in Big Finish form and Warren has an interview with author DG Valdron about his three-book series diving deep into Doctor Who fan films, “The Pirate’s Histories of Doctor Who”!

We engage in a counterfactual discussion, speculating about what would have happened to Doctor Who if Russell T Davis had not been charged with bringing back the series to BBC1 in late 2003. We discuss what was happening with Who in 2003 — "The Scream of the Shalka" — and wonder what would have happened next. Would Who have returned to BBC1 later in the decade? Who would have been showrunner if not RTD? Or, would the programme have died a slow death as its fandom aged and slowly faded from memory? Opening music is "O'Carolan's Farewell" performed by Derek Bell and used in the opening of Death Comes to Time. Closing music is the Shoestring theme, composed by George Fenton. It’s been a mere 900 years since last week’s episode, and it’s time to check in with Ashildr to see if she’s still the naive and loving young girl she was back in her Viking village days. Or — like the rest of us — has she simply turned into Peter Capaldi’s Doctor? It’s The Woman Who Lived.

Nathan refers to the Blackadder the Third episode Amy and Amiability in which a young woman played by Miranda Richardson disguises herself as a highwayman called the Shadow, who has a serious problem with squirrels. The first scene of this story is very much written by someone who remembers that episode.

In his massive best seller Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell proposes the theory that it takes 10,000 hours to become really proficient at something. If you want to hear two of our favourite podcasters rip Gladwell’s book apart, they do that in an episode of their podcast If Books Could Kill.

Richard mentions the Sydney Theatre Company’s 2020 production of The Picture of Dorian Gray, directed by Kip Williams and starring Eryn Jean Norvill as the only cast member, playing no less than 26 characters. Williams is bringing that production to London’s West End in 2024, starring Succession’s Sarah Snook.

The Doctor Who production crew gave Maisie Williams and Rufus Hound video cameras so that they could record things that took place during the production. One of Rufus’s videos made it onto the Series 9 blu-ray release; three of them can be found on the BBC’s YouTube channel — here, here, and here. Watch them: they’re adorable.

Todd recommends the Torchwood episodes also written by Catherine Tregenna, particularly the sad and beautiful Captain Jack Harkness, as well as Meat and Adam (and Out of Time, a brilliant episode that we didn’t mention).

Simon

Simon wants you watch The Beast (2023) starring Léa Seydoux, who played James Bond’s love interest in the two most recent films. It’s a romance set in three different time periods, 1910, 2014 and 2044. It’s due for release some time early next year.

Richard

Richard has headed into Big Finish territory, particularly those stories starring Rufus Hound as the Monk, particularly The Missy Adventures, whose first three box sets also feature Rufus Hound. He also appears with Tim Treloar and Katy Manning in Volume 4 of The Third Doctor Adventures.

Wallander was a Swedish TV series based on the detective novels by Henning Menkell. It was re-made in English, in a version starring Kenneth Branagh as the detective, and featuring our very own haematophobic Viking Heidi (Barnaby Kay).
