Episode 78 - Earthshock (with Jon Arnold)
Doctor Who LiteratureEarthshock was a signal moment in the journey of many Doctor Who fans when it aired in March 1982, from the surprise reveal of a returning monster, to the unexpected departure of a regular cast member. Ian Marter's August 1983 novelization of the story is a bit different from what we saw on television, but is no less impactful.
We're very happy to have with us this week Jon Arnold (@The_Arn) as a first-time Doctor Who Literature guest. Jon can be heard on two other excellent podcasts, the Doctor Who-inspired Strangers in Space (@strangerscast), as well as the football (soccer)-themed @BustingBallsPod. Jon has also written several terrific volumes in Jason's favorite Who non-fiction range, The Black Archives from Observe Books, including a look at a TV story previously examined on this very show, Invasion of the Dinosaurs. And don't forget Jon's contributions to the Silver Archive range; Jon and Jason also discuss TV's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" this week.
Also mentioned this week is Jim Sangster (@monster_maker)'s newest DWLit-themed T-shirt.

Dangle Your Lallies
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, a technologically-augmented interdimensional mummy runs amok on a replica of the Orient Express in space under the control of a terrifying alien intelligence or something. It’s a day at the office for Doctor Who, in Mummy on the Orient Express.
Notes and links
Mummy on the Orient Express marks the triumphant return of Janet Henfrey to Doctor Who after about twenty-five years: she plays Miss Hardaker in The Curse of Fenric. She will come back some time after that to play the Adjudicator in Sil and the Seven Seeds of Arodor.
David Bamber is in charge of this version of the Orient Express: Nathan recognises him immediately as Cicero in Rome and as Mr Collins in Pride and Prejudice. Richard notes that he plays [Adolf Hitler][] in Valkyrie (2008), and perhaps more terrifyingly Noel in Camping, a sitcom created by Julia Davis. Si saw him turn up in an episode of Endeavour, the Inspector Morse prequel set in the late 1960s.
Meanwhile, Christopher Villiers returns to Doctor Who as Professor Moorhouse; thirty years earlier he was young Hugh Fitzwilliam in The King’s Demons. Alarmingly, Richard is right to suggest that he is a descendant of the aristocracy.
And finally, Frank Skinner is a famous standup comedian and radio presenter. The show Richard is thinking of may be The Rest is History on Radio 4, but he has been in many, many radio shows over the years.
You can see John Sessions’s 1994 audition to play the Doctor in the TV movie here on YouTube. He plays the terrifying General Tannis in the BBC webcast Death Comes to Time (2001).
In 2018, Jenna Coleman starred in a TV miniseries called The Cry, which was shot in Australia.

And more
We’ve got an exciting new Doctor Who project to launch at the start of 2024, but — annoyingly — we’re not going to tell you anything more about it yet. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, you can find Jodie into Terror, our flashcast on the entirety of the Whittaker Era of Doctor Who, at jodieintoterror.com, at @JodieIntoTerror on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and wherever podcasts can be found. We’ll be back with a new flashcast on the second Russell T Davies era in November.
Our James Bond commentary podcast is called Bondfinger, and you can find that at bondfinger.com, at @bondfingercast on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and everywhere else as well.
We can also be heard on the Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power, which has completed its coverage of the first half of the show’s entire run. Recording is continuing on schedule, and our coverage of Series C will be ready for you later in the year.
There’s also our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. In our most recent episode, we watched a massive soap opera event two-parter from Deep Space Nine, complete with long-lost children and scheming lookalikes — In Purgatory’s Shadow and By Inferno’s Light.

6.6 The McGannual
Doctor Who - Pieces of EighthONE OF the great crimes of the 90s, with regards from Doctor Who (aside from a lack of a TV series for the Eighth Doctor) was the fact that the show never got an annual that year.
Something of a British tradition, each Christmas, children are given a hardbacked book, containing comics and stories with their favourite characters from TV, film, toys, etc, as well as puzzles and games.
But now, 27 years after it should have been published, The Doctor Who Annual 1997 has arrived, from Terraqueous Distribution.
With Becca on maternity leave, Kenny's joined by his Power of 3 co-conspirator David Steel, and chat with editor Mark, as well as one of its many writers, Rob Nisbet.

Episode 72 - Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg & Star Trek: Picard
Who and CompanyThis month our guest is writer, publisher, and man of many hats, Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg! Arnold joins us to discuss the birth of his Doctor Who fandom, many different aspects of literary fandom, and exactly where the ideas originate for most of the books published through ATB Publishing.
Then Arnold takes us into strange new worlds as he brings his Pick of the Month, the Paramount Plus blockbuster hit series, Star Trek: Picard! We discuss why we all think Season 3 is some of the greatest Star Trek ever written, our shared love of Patrick Stewart, and why Terry Matalas is the current saviour of the known universe.
And be warned! There are MASSIVE spoilers for Picard (Season 3 in particular), so go watch those 10 episodes first! That's right, burn up that 7 day trial that you've been waiting to use and binge it. It's totally worth it!

TDP 1158: Rani Takes on the World Beyond Bannerman Road from bigfinish worlds of doctorwho review
Tin Dog PodcastTDP 1158: Rani Takes on the World Beyond Bannerman Road from bigfinish worlds of doctorwho review This title was released in April 2023. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 30 June 2023, and on general sale after this date. Life on Bannerman Road was always an adventure for Rani Chandra and her friends. A childhood of mystery and wonder, of meeting aliens, time travellers, lost princes, intergalactic robots and so much more - all alongside Sarah Jane Smith. Sarah Jane is gone. Childhood ends. Everyone grows up eventually. But the story doesn't stop there. When Rani and Clyde are reunited, adventure finds them once again - ready and waiting to take on the world! 1.1 Here Today by Joseph Lidster Years after her adventures with Sarah Jane Smith and friends, Rani Chandra is a successful journalist - she’s brought down a government, and her podcast is making waves. And she's about to be surprised by a visit from her best friend, Clyde Langer - who has an announcement of his own. But tonight Clyde isn’t the only visitor to Ealing... In the skies above, a flying saucer approaches - and only one person on Earth can stop it destroying London! 1.2 Destination: Wedding by James Goss Rani and Gita Chandra have been invited to a dream wedding on a luxury island resort. But how did Tiff from school end up marrying a film star? And why has she asked all the worst people from her life alongside the Hollywood A-listers? While Gita samples the canapés and criticises the flower arrangements, Rani senses something amiss... The perfect wedding comes at a price - but who will be paying? 1.3 The Witching Tree by Lizzie Hopley Chasing a podcast award, encouraged by a secret source, Rani investigates a ‘haunted’ restaurant built around a twisted tree. The owners could be faking the spooky activity, but Rani soon realises the tree is not what it seems. As a terrifying threat to planet Earth is revealed, Clyde and Phoenix are dragged into the fight. Rani is torn between revealing the truth, or keeping a secret too terrifying to broadcast..

#226 - A Couple of Rankers
Doctor Who: The Metebelis 2Ben and David continue their look at the Doctor Who Monthly readership rankings with a chat about where the Troughton, Pertwee, and Tom Baker stories stacked up. We share our theories, such as the Web Planet Affect, to why the stories ranked in the order that they did and discuss on which stories do we think are underrated, overrated, and correctly placed? We notice too that animations do not seem to make a difference with a missing story's popularity. The opening track is "Gentlemen, Good Luck" and closing track is "Mahogany", both from The Sun Maker soundtrack composed by Dudley Simpson. We recorded this episode on 22 May 2023.

Dave’s Big Day Out
The Doctor Who ShowOn May 13, 2023, our Dave travelled up to Sydney to attend the Sophie Aldred fan event, run by our fellow Antipodean podcasters, The Sirens of Audio.
In addition to being there to support the return of small, fan-run events in this country, Dave was also tasked by the hosts to conduct an on-stage interview with Doctor Who author, Jon Blum. This was originally to be a joint interview with Jon and his wife, the celebrated Doctor Who author, Kate Orman, however Kate was unable to attend on the day.
This podcast is a half-hour discussion between Rob and Dave about the day in general, followed by about half an hour of audio from the Job Blum chat. As we mention on the podcast, the audio of the Blum interview isn't up to our usual podcast standards, but we're sure you'd rather hear a version of the chat than nothing at all, so we include it here.
Enjoy!

Episode 77 - Four to Doomsday (with Jason Davis, and Matt West)
Doctor Who LiteratureFor a story like Four to Doomsday, what else could we do but give you three terrific interviews, with two guests?
Up first is Jason Davis (@TheJasonDavis), writer and editor extraordinaire, of TheJasonDavis.com, This interview was recorded live at Gallifrey One in Los Angeles in February 2023, and you already heard the first half of that interview in my Harlan Ellison special. This is the rest of that conversation.
Then I was joined on short notice by Matt West (@WingedPodcast) of Q the Winged Podcast and Miwk Publishing (on which Matt gives me a pronunciation lesson).
Followed by a return visit from Jason Davis.
Between the three of us and the three interviews, he hit just about every corner of science fiction from television to the printed page.
You can find some more of Matt's work on the original Pyramids of Mars DVD.
And Jason (this podcast's Jason) was most recently on Trap One to discuss the Season 9 Blu-ray Collection.
Doctor Who Literature is now a member of the Direction Point Doctor Who podcast network.

The Goldilocks Zone
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, Nathan, Brendan, Simon and Colin are trapped in a room with only forty-five minutes to decide whether Kill the Moon is terrible or a towering work of genius. It goes quite well, surprisingly.
Notes and links
Brendan suggests that Kill the Moon addresses the Guns versus Frocks, um, disagreement, which reached its peak during the heyday of the Virgin New Adventures. Nathan wrote an essay about his take on the debate many, many years ago.
El Sandifer’s essay on TARDIS Eruditorum contains, as you might expect, a clever reading of this episode, and both Brendan and Nathan find reasons to refer to it here.
Colin and Brendan mention science fiction shows called The Expanse and Babylon 5, but I absolutely refuse to do any research into them at all.
Follow us
Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, Simon is @simonmoore72, and Colin is @colin_neal. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow the podcast on Twitter at @FTEpodcast.
We’re also on Facebook and Mastodon, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we’ll make such a fun and ambitious episode of your favourite TV show that you die of embarrassment whenever your friends mention it.
And more
We’ve got an exciting new Doctor Who project to launch at the start of 2024, but — annoyingly — we’re not going to tell you anything more about it yet.
Recording is continuing on schedule, and our coverage of Series C should be ready for you later in the year.
There’s also our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. In our most recent episode, we were bored rigid as the crew of the Enterprise completely dismantled a horrible authoritarian human colony in The Masterpiece Society. Back to Deep Space Nine next week.
