Can the show Doctor Who work without Doctor Who? In this episode, David suggests that Doctor Who is not required and that the real only constant needed for the series is the TARDIS and a crew. Ben entertains this thesis and we discuss what such a show would be like and how it could work and its limitations. We ask if the show has evolved to such a place where the Doctor may be superfluous… or maybe not. Opening music is "My Beautiful Ghost Monument", composed by Segun Akinola. Closing music is the intro theme to Blake's 7, composed by Dudley Simpson. We recorded this episode on 13 November 2022.

There is lots to like in this story, even though we felt it probably could have been told in four episodes. So grab your parka and pay respects at the monastery because it's time to go after The Abominable Snowmen!

WE LIED! We told you episode 4.16 was the last of the run, and it really, really was planned to be... and now, it's the penultimate episode of season four!

Before our fifth season kicks off, looking at Phase One of the EDA (we like that phrase - we'll have to use it more in future), we present an overview of the BBC Books series, as not all of our listeners will be aware of the ins and outs of the ongoing adventures.

In September 2003, Panini published the fifth of their Doctor Who Magazine specials, The Complete Eighth Doctor, which looked at the Wilderness Years, the making of the TV Movie, and looks at this incarnation in audio, comics and books.

The feature on the books was written by friend of the podcast Matt Michael, and only featured the novels up to Reckless Engineering, with a further 10 to follow before the range came to an end, so the feature is not fully complete.

In it, Matt considered the highs and lows of the Doctor's novel outings, and to set the scene for the next 18 episodes, we present the feature, Hallo Spaceboy, read by its author.

But instead, Dylan and Mark discuss Paul McGann's Big Finish output more generally.

Under discussion: The relative merits of Marc Platt's Doctor Who oeuvre, ghost sandwiches, Lord Byron's sexual deviancy, wise words from Terrance Dicks, and sarky butlers.

Also: What does the Doctor Who theme tune sound like when put in a blender and punted down the stairs? What connects Doctor Who to King Kong? What does a Cyberman smell like? And how close were Big Finish to the edge of destruction in 2011?

After a whole week of anniversary celebrations on Flight Through Entirety, it’s time for us to acknowledge how ridiculous it all is, and who better to take charge of that than our very own Peter Davison, who lovingly chronicles his own utterly fictional attempts to shoehorn himself into the Anniversary Special in The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.

    Watch the episode!

The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot was a special feature on various DVD and Blu-ray releases of The Day of the Doctor, of course, but it’s still available to watch on the BBC website. So have at it!

Peter Davison’s first foray into Doctor Who-related sketch comedy formed part of BBC Two’s Doctor Who night in 1999: a sketch called The Kidnappers, in which he starred with Doctor Who’s very own Mark Gatiss and David Walliams. It’s a special feature on the DVD release of An Unearthly Child, and it’s still available to watch on YouTube.

    And more

You can find Jodie into Terror, our flashcast on the Whittaker Era of Doctor Who, at jodieintoterror.com, at @JodieIntoTerror on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and wherever podcasts can be found. We’ll be back with a new flashcast on the second Russell T Davies era in November 2023.

Our James Bond commentary podcast is called Bondfinger, and you can find that at bondfinger.com, at @bondfingercast on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and everywhere else as well.

We can also be heard on the Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power, which a few weeks ago started its coverage of Series B of the show. In this week’s episode, we find ourselves on the very esge of the Galaxy in Horizon.

And finally, there’s our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, Nathan isn’t angry so much as disappointed with perennial Deep Space Nine fan favourite The Siege of AR-558.

Call Out: Ever want to be on Primary Sources?

    The Doctor Who Show

    Direct Podcast Download

    01:52 (GMT) - 26 Nov 2022

When our final episode of Primary Sources went out on September 18 this year, Rob talked about the idea of some special episodes at a future date.

Well folks, the time has arrived.

In this short podcast, Rob will explain his concept and read you a letter from DWM #238 from the 8th of May, 1996. Your mission is to reply to it.

Pick up your recording device of choice and riff back to Rob about the letter he read. Try to be concise (maybe jot down your main points before you record), and try not to go beyond 4-5 minutes, maximum. Most importantly, have fun with it!

Get your submissions in by December 3 - that's a week from now - to be sure of making it onto the episode, which will go out on our feed later in December.

Looking forward to wherever the letter takes you...!

Send your submissions, ideally in MP3 format, to hello@thedwshow.net

It’s book review time. And it’s a long one.

In this episode, we review Temporal Logbook 3: Changed Lives from our friends at Pencil Tip Publishing.

This is an anthology collection by various authors. All proceeds from the publication are donated to SETTLED, an independent charity providing free and trustworthy information, advice, and support in different languages to EU citizens in the UK. And we are excited to have our very own Shaun Collins who was asked to write one of the short stories in the book.

Plus we discuss the recent announcement of a new companion played by Millie Gibson.

    Enjoy!

The original FTE team has already spent an hour discussing The Day of the Doctor, but it wouldn’t be a fiftieth anniversary celebration without James, Peter and Simon on the couch toasting everyone’s health. There will be cocktails, as we convene just one more time to discuss The Day of the Doctor.

You’ve already had your fair share of notes and links today, so we’re just doing one this episode — the 1976 edition of Terrance Dicks and Malcolm Hulke’s book The Making of Doctor Who, which was the source for Terrance’s famous description of the Doctor, a description that is quoted in this episode — “He is impulsive, idealistic, ready to risk his life for a worthy cause. He hates tyranny and oppression and anything that is anti-life. He never gives in and he never gives up, however overwhelming the odds against him. The Doctor believes in good and fights evil. Though often caught up in violent situations, he is a man of peace. He is never cruel or cowardly. In fact, to put it simply, the Doctor is a hero.” Happy birthday, Doctor!
