Radio Free Skaro #914 - Rate Limit Exceeded
Radio Free SkaroThe news is sparse this week, as sparse as the Thursday/Friday schedule for San Diego Comic Con, reflecting the general malaise of the entertainment media complex in these times of IP dominance and labour strife. But that won’t stop the Three Who Rule from giving their half-baked opinions on costuming, editing video tape via razor blades and gumption, the non-legacy of VR, and Threads, the latest in a long line of social media hellsites. So go on, skeet that toot into your eardrums, tweeps! Not the nighttime crowd, obviously.

Steven's new project is Reimagining Doctor Who, which comes highly recommended.
Many thanks to Jim Sangster (@Monster_Maker) for research assistance and for a dramatic reading from the diaries of Angus Mackay, a member of the Mawdryn Undead guest cast.

Radio Free Skaro #913 - Most People Depart With a Scream
Radio Free SkaroIt’s the end, but the moment has been prepared for…by the Three Who Rule who are ringing in Canada Day weekend by wringing out the very last vestiges of the Timelash, our popular(?) time-filling exercise in Doctor Who reflection. We also have news of Doctor Who mostly absent from SDCC, MIA for Fortnite, and country cousin Star Trek all but vanishing from Crave, which continues to be Canada’s HBO by going from quite decent to very crappy in under a year. The Doctor Who PodcastJoin Drew, James, Brent, Michele and Ian as they take the DWP campervan for it’s latest spin around the Whooniverse!
Arc of Infinity is the subject of Debut Who – a story from 1983 that Ian has somehow managed to avoid seeing, despite being on this earth for fifty years and a Doctor Who fan for thirty! Imagine seeing an Ergon for the first time in 2023?!
The first volume of Big Finish‘s The Diary of River Song comes under scrutiny from Michele and Brent.
As well as random campfire discussions about theme music arrangements, the new approach to marketing the show has taken, a pitch to Big Finish for an audio story featuring the Ergon and the Garm, Mark Hamill’s Joker, spreadsheets and ex-possums – join the team for a feature length edition of the DWP!

A panel of three great friends of the podcast then join Jason to discuss Five Doctors -- is it the greatest episode of all time? Again, the answer may surprise you. Welcome back to Graeme Burk (@GraemeBurk), Professor Stacey Smith?, and David Barsky.

Absolutely Ainley
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastIt’s happened again: it’s the end of the season, and all our long-dead relatives have come back as Cybermen. Only this time, instead of hanging around the kitchen reeking of tobacco, they’re wandering through graveyards and — well, that’s it really, wandering through graveyards. Fortunately, Missy is here to liven things up a bit. It’s Death in Heaven.
Notes and links
Nathan alludes to discovering during the week of recording some of the terrible consequences of Australia’s presence in Afghanistan. This is upsetting reading, so content warnings apply.
We mention Doctor Who and the Silurians as a previous story where the Doctor comes into conflict with soldiers, and we refer to El Sandifer’s take on the end of that story, a scene which presents this conflict explicitly but which is never followed up in any satisfactory way.
Richard brings up Chris Addison’s Radio 4 comedy series Civilisation, which co-stars the original Ford Prefect, Geoffrey McGivern.
And, finally, the Doctor plummeting to his death from a plane inevitably reminds us of Roger Moore in a similar situation as James Bond in Moonraker (1979).

There’s also our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. In our most recent episode, we watch an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called Genesis, in which the crew devolve into various types of monsters and animals, upsetting fans who have the (baffling) expectation that their franchise will take itself more seriously.

TDP 1162: 7.2. Doctor Who: Daleks! Genesis of Terror
Tin Dog PodcastThis title was released in May 2023. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 30 June 2023, and on general sale after this date. In a paved garden outside time, the Doctor is presented with an awful prophecy: the conquest of all time by the Daleks. To prevent this terrible fate, the Time Lords have decided on a radical course — to weaponise time themselves, and destroy the Daleks before they were ever created. And they want the Doctor to carry out this extraordinary task! Soon, he and his companions Sarah and Harry are on the battle-ravaged planet Skaro, where a war has been raging for centuries. The war is now waged by teenagers using the last surviving weapons. Everything is desperate. But the Kaled’s chief scientist has a new weapon that he thinks might just change everything… Disc 1: Full cast version of Terry Nation's first draft of episode one of Genesis of the Daleks, with Nicholas Briggs providing the stage directions, plus readings by individual cast members of the storylines for the other episodes. Disc 2: BBC broadcaster and journalist Samira Ahmed interviews Philip Hinchcliffe.

INTERVIEW: Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who
The Doctor Who ShowWith a new non-fiction Doctor Who book on the horizon, this time looking at the creation of Doctor Who back in 1963, Rob sits down for the third time in the life of the podcast with friend of the show and the book's author, Paul Hayes.
Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who is available from Ten Acre Films on July 24, 2023.

‘Fresh and compelling… As definitive an account of those early years as I have read’ Toby Hadoke
When Doctor Who began on Saturday November 23 1963, few could have guessed that it marked the start of perhaps the most extraordinary story in the history of BBC television drama. But there had already been another story, equally extraordinary yet unseen, leading up to the transmission of that opening episode – the creation of the series itself.
Pull to Open explores the behind-the-scenes saga of Doctor Who in 1963, when a chain of events at the BBC brought together a disparate group to launch what would become one of British TV’s best-loved and most successful programmes. It’s the story of why these events happened; the BBC creative culture into which Doctor Who was born; how television drama was made in the early 1960s; and an insight into the people who started this epic journey.
Drawing from the BBC’s written archives and new interviews with some of those who were there, including Doctor Who’s first director Waris Hussein and original co-star Carole Ann Ford, Pull to Open is a detailed and comprehensive account of the programme’s path to the screen. Immerse yourself in the world of BBC Television in 1963 and discover how a series which was almost cancelled before a single episode was shown survived to cement its place in the popular culture of a nation.
Foreword by Toby Hadoke

Who's He? Podcast 423 | Don't want to be a puppet or a ventriloquist
Who's He?In this episode of the Who's He? Podcast....
Review - The God Complex
In this episode, the Doctor, played by Matt Smith, along with his companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), arrive at a mysterious hotel that seems to be a trap for unsuspecting victims. Each room in the hotel contains the worst fears of the people who enter them, and the fears manifest as a creature that eventually kills them.
To chat about this story, Phil is joined by Mark Cockram from the All Of Time and Space Podcast to chat about this story that Mark chose for discussion. Obviously they get the chills about those damn ventriloquist dolls but for some reason the word "sexy" is used a couple of times for no apparent reason.
