Real Characters
Last year we asked ourselves and our listeners a simple but important question: What makes Doctor Who important to you? The answer now lies within the pages of Real Characters: The Psychology of Parasocial Relationships with Media Characters, by Dr. Karen Shackleford, PhD (Ed.) from Fielding University Press providing insight into why we connect with fictional characters. The Doctor Changes, but the Feelings Stay the Same, is the bow-tie worthy Eleventh Chapter. Real Characters is available now on Amazon.

John Jennings & Lovecraft Country
Who and CompanyIt's February and our guest this month is Eisner and Bram Stoker Award winning writer John Jennings! John is also a professor of media and cultural studies at the University of California at Riverside and has just created the ABRAMS Megascope line of graphic novels, and of course he's a huge Doctor Who fan. John drops by to talk about his impressive writing career, how his Doctor Who fandom began, and what scared us all growing up.
Then John brings his Pick of the Month, the HBO hit sci-fi drama series, Lovecraft Country! We discuss the anthology-like structure of the show, how the show represented the Black experience, how the book differs from the show, and quite a bit about Lovecraft himself.

Episode 39: Hiding in Spacesuits
Something WhoGav surprises us all with his return to the Something Who bunker, perhaps drawn by the siren call of wine and science. Along with Paul, Giles and Richard he discusses two Doctor Who stories with a connection to 1969: Third Doctor story The Ambassadors of Death, which was written in that year, and Eleventh Doctor outing The Impossible Astronaut / Day of the Moon, which is set in 1969, both with strong links to the space programmes of that era.
We try to stay on topic, but inevitably we stray into programmes of the same era and we give Amy's Crack a particularly thorough examination. Oddly, despite the fact that everybody had a go writing Ambassadors, it's Moffat's episodes that seem to have the most loose threads.
Please like or share our podcast with people who will enjoy it, so we can build our listener base high for happiness. You can rate us directly on Apple Podcasts or Podchaser.com
The teaser clip that Giles refers to in the episode is here: https://youtu.be/dDhmZwiS-0g
Gav's book Doctor Who: Dalek Combat Training Manual can be found here (other retailers are available) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1785945327/ref=cm_sw_r_u_apa_fabc_FxBdGbD82685Z
Also find his excellent YouTube series Terry Nation Army here: https://youtube.com/user/Dalek6388
The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end.

335: Confusing Confluence of Culinary Ideas (Dead of Night)
Trust Your DoctorHonestly this title alone was confusing.
We record these podcast in the dead of night now actually. Like way late at night. Like 7 PM. I know, so late right. In the UK the sun is probably still up at that time, being all a million miles from the equator and all that, but down here thanks to the end of DST we’re solidly two hours into darkness at that point. Yeah sun goes down at 5. Well 5:30 now but you get the point. It’s Dead of Night, written by Jane Espensen and aired on July 22, 2011.

112. Claws of Axos Meets It's a Knockout
On the Time LashBen and Mark discuss hangovers, wasted potential and climates of fear as they try to spin a few hours out of ‘The Pyramid at the End of the World’ and ‘Warriors of the Deep’. Ben and Mark try to criticise the failings of ‘Pyramid’ without being too insensitive, discussing how successfully Doctor Who tries to tackle Brexit and Trump through the Monk’s trilogy. Meanwhile, Margaret Thatcher throws a spanner in the works for Johnny Byrne’s Cold War allegory ‘Warriors of the Deep’. Is the Doctor’s blindness actually just a bit insulting? How did that chemical lab meet building regulations with such a dangerously access unfriendly lock? What exactly does Turlough offer young boys watching at home? ALSO: Ben and Mark audition for the Degsestial Funmaker’s Shakespeare Company, Mark’s girlfriend drunkenly tries to describe the Myrka and there’s a competition to win a copy of Sylvester McCoy’s new film ‘The Owners’ on DVD.
