In this episode of the Who's He? Podcast, Phil and Paul return once again to the written word of Target with a look at Doctor Who and The Loch Ness Monster by Terrance Dicks. Based on Terror of The Zygons, a classic of Doctor who, Phil and Paul critique the changes made between screen and book and does it also add up to be a classic in written form also?

Also this week, Phil talks to composer and DJ Dominic Glynn who most of you should know rearranged the Doctor Who theme for season 23. Amongst other things, Dominic talks of his time working on the show and who and what inspired him to become a composer. Don't miss it!

And in the news, Peter Capaldi on series 11, the passing of another Who actor and in Omega's Tat Corner, some tat that is strangely familiar.

  • Doctor Who: Verity!

    Doctor Who: Verity!

    Direct Podcast Download

    11:30 (GMT) - 30 Mar 2016

After last week's delightful interview with Katy Manning, we thought it a perfect time to cover Jo Grant's first outing. Join Deb, Katrina, Liz, Lynne, and Tansy as they discuss"Terror of the Autons", which was not only Jo's first story, but the Master's, as well as what many call the first real "UNIT family" story. Some even argue it's the genesis of a budding romance between the Master and the Doctor...

Tansy is on Valium, Liz forgets her intro, and Kat gets to talk about punk rock. A good time is had by all! And of course, it wouldn't be a Verity! ep if the Verities didn't take a sweet tangent into social issues. This time it's an examination of accents and the class systems of various countries.

Joined by guest game-master Joshua Lou Friedman (of Long Island Who and Gallifrey One convention fame), we play a game of identifying Doctor's quotes -- but not just our beloved Gallifreyan Doctor. We've also included Doc Emmett Brown, and Dr. Sheldon Cooper in the mix. Let the games...begin!

They say there'll be thousands pouring into Manchester tomorrow. From all over the county, north and south. It'll be a piece of history. People will remember this!" Lost in the smog of the Industrial Revolution, the TARDIS crashes four miles south of Manchester, in the grounds of Hurley Hall - a grand mansion belonging to a local factory owner, a proudly self-made man. But while Hurley dreams of growing richer still on the wealth of secret knowledge locked up in the Doctor's time and space machine, his servants hope only for a fair day's pay for a fair day's work. His young maid Cathy, for instance, whom Nyssa learns is looking forward to joining the working people's march to St Peter's Field, in the heart of the city. There'll be speeches and banners and music. It'll be like one big jamboree... Or so she thinks. For the city's establishment have called in their own private militia, to control the crowd. One of the darkest days in Manchester's history is about to unfold - and the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan are right in the thick of it. Written By: Paul MagrsDirected By: Jamie Anderson Cast Peter Davison (The Doctor), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), Janet Fielding (Tegan), Hayley Jayne Standing (Cathy), Robbie Stevens (Hurley), Gerard Kearns (William), Philip Labey (Thomas Tyler), Wayne Forester (Walton/Roberts/Rev Small), Liz Morgan(Mrs Hurley/Sister). Ian Briggs, Nicholas Briggs or Nicholas Mallet? Let me rephrase the question. We have faith in each other but have no idea what the Doctor has faith in. What is up with Sorin's scarf and should we have faith in that? But if they mention inhuman again, Josh may throw something through the computer screen and his rifle is cocked. Is it weird that both Ace's grandfather is named Frank and also died in a fire? Mind blown. Ace is not a little girl anymore and her distraction is the strangest bit of dialogue in all of Doctor Who history. Onto Episode 3 kids - it's over the top, strange, filled with over-exaggerated metaphors. Enjoy the banter! After all, it's raining men. Hallalujah.

"Haven't I seen you somewhere before?"

Dunno. Have you watched The Golden Voyage of Sinbad?

Hurrah! It's double helpings of Tom Baker in 1980's Meglos, one bristlier and greener around the gills than the other.

It's a saga of succulents, savants and power supplies wherein Romana is fondled by a bunch of flowers, K9 is assaulted by a bunch of light opera extras and the Doctor is plagued by a bunch of pricks.

Debate rages between the Wigs and the lunatic fringe and the poor man's John Le Mesurier is caught dithering in the middle.

Will Meglos succeed? Is Brotadac's anagram apposite? Will anyone remember any of this in the morning?

Listen in as Jim and Martin discuss ... sorry... what were we talking about again...?

    21:42 (GMT) - 27 Mar 2016

As Erik will be rejoining us next month, this month we are again joined by our friend Felicity Brown as we discuss the BBC Books Past Doctor Adventure The Wages of Sin by David A. McIntee, featuring the Third Doctor, Liz, and Jo. From the back cover:

The Doctor has always been wary of meddling with established history. But what happens when the history books lie?

With the secrets of time travel restored to him after his long exile on Earth, the Doctor has made a test flight into the past. Accompanying him are his assistant, Jo, and an old friend, scientist Liz Shaw. The travellers realise they are visiting one of the most significant times in Earth's history - and one of the most dangerous...

It is Russia, 1916, and Europe is in the grip of the Great War. With the TARDIS missing, its crew find themselves trapped in a country on the brink of revolution.

The Doctor and Liz are soon caught up in the deadly machinations of Tsar Nicholas's court, while Jo appears to fall under the sinister spell of the infamous Mad Monk, Rasputin...

David A. McIntee also wrote The Lords of the Storm, The Shadow of Weng-Chiang, White Darkness, and The Dark Path, all of which we've discussed previously. The Wages of Sin stands out as one of the few (if not the only) historical novels in the Third Doctor's range of stories.

    15:57 (GMT) - 27 Mar 2016

Just uh. Don’t mind me. Just a cactus. Nothing more.

This week Kiyan and Dylan record a new episode, and specifically ensure that there are no cacti in the room. No guarantees about Eucalyptus though. It’s Meglos, written byJohn Flanagan and Andrew McCulloch. It aired in September and October of 1980.

We dedicate this episode to Adrienne Corri.

    Show-notes

00:28 The Cailleach is a Gaelic deity that appears in season 17’s The Stones of Blood.
07:27 Scene Sync was an advancement of CSO technology used only in this story. It allowed CSO shots to include moving backgrounds. A documentary about the technique, The Scene Sync Story, was included on the DVD release of Meglos.
08:18 Solfatara is a volcano in Italy whose name is derived from the Latin sulpha terra, or “sulfur earth.” Sorta makes you wonder what Zolfa-Thura smelled like…
19:00 Goosebumps is a children’s horror book series. The second book in the series, Stay Out of the Basement, features a sentient plant.
24:35 Eucalyptus is a native Australian tree that’s considered an invasive species in California. Read more about its invasive properties here.
28:54 Couldn’t find the specific documentary that detailed the Death Star’s inaccurate lasers, but here’s an article with a video that discussed the same thing!
