Jubilee

Rob Shearman has written a number of Big Finish audios, and some books, including Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical and Everyone’s Just So Special. These are all available from his page on the Big Finish website.

Fans of upsetting and occasionally funny near-future dystopias will enjoy Black Mirror, which is available on Netflix.

As usual, Elizabeth Sandifer has an insighful take on this story, which Nathan is impressed by. Shearman himself comments on the article.

If you’re in the mood for a much more harrowing patriarchal dystopia, Hulu has recently made a brilliant TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

Doctor Who and the Pirates

This story was written by Jac Rayner, who has written a number of Doctor Who plays and novels. She also maintains a blog.

The One Doctor

Richard and Nathan both remember watching The Maths Show in primary school, which occasional featured a segment called Doctor Where, in which the Doctor and Sally-Anne explained concepts like scale and probability.

The hapless Fry drinks the emperor of the planet Trisol in the Futurama episode My Three Suns.

The Brink of Death

Michael Jayston starred in a dramatisation of Geoffrey Household’s 1939 novel, Rogue Male, in which a British ex-serviceman travels to Europe to assassinate the unnamed dictator of a major power. (Oh, okay, it’s probably Hitler.)

The Third Doctor, currently still exiled to Earth, has to play ‘messenger’ for the Time Lords and deliver a ‘box’ containing something to someone on or around the planet of Solos – on the day they are just about to achieve independence from the Overlords of the Earth Empire in the 30th Century. Of course things don’t go as planned, with the Marshall of the Skybase staging a military coup, Jo getting kidnapped, and the planet’s population slowly turning into bug-like monsters.

So it's finally here. The bicentennial. The Big 2-0-0. The Oncoming Storm celebrates 200 episodes of Doctor Who books, audios, and comics by acknowledging that they won't get to talk about all of the best non televised adventures of the Doctor before they wrap up, so it's time for a list! Josh, Ashley, Jeff, and Rachel have come to the table with a list of their top five favorite Doctor Who spin off media that won't be covered by the show, and they're gonna tell you why they're worthy of being the best of what's left! At least, that was the idea. It's not long before everyone is cheating and expanding their lists to cover whole swathes of material. But when you have 50 plus years to cover, it's hard to keep it to a top five! Rounding out the episode, we present our special 200th episode panel from Wholanta 2017. It quickly goes off the rails and becomes a Who spin off media 101 panel, but we wanted to include it as a thank you for all of the fine people who woke up on a Sunday morning to come spend time with us!
