Radio Free Skaro
- Description:
- Radio Free Skaro is possibly the most popular, most prolific and charmingly irreverent (but never irrelevant) Doctor Who podcast around. Since August 2006, hosts Warren (in Vancouver, BC) and Steven (in Edmonton, AB) have provided listeners with their brand of amusing Doctor Who praise and punishment. A year later, Chris (in Amherst, NS) was added to the team, and The Three Who Rule were born. Recommended by Doctor Who Magazine, Radio Free Skaro provides an entertaining and diverting listen for the diehard or casual Doctor Who fan. New episodes usually appear on Sundays, following a loose magazine format of the three hosts discussing the news and events of the past week in the worlds of Doctor Who, Torchwood, and the Sarah Jane Adventures. They have also recorded special commentary podcasts for classic series and new series episodes of Doctor Who along with interviews of some of the brightest of the Doctor Who luminaries. Radio Free Skaro is also the official podcast of Gallifrey One, the world's largest and longest-running annual Doctor Who convention.

Radio Free Skaro #54 - the drums, the drums!
Episode Duration: 0 days, 1 hours, 21 minutes and 10 secondsWarren, Steven and Chris the Third Guy yandered on for a record-breaking 30 minutes before commenting on the Sound of Drums, the penultimate episode of Series Three and not a bad bit of adventure and mayhem besides. At the very least, it's better than Last of the Time Lords, coming up next week.

Radio Free Skaro #53 - Truly, this is Utopia
Episode Duration: 0 days, 1 hours, 2 minutes and 4 secondsA high watermark for both the classic and new series, Utopia is an hour of top-rate Who, and the Three comment on it mightily, including some off-color joking about by Warren (Mr. Jacobi, the remark was meant as a joke, so please call off those lawyers, there's a good fellow.) Listen to us gush over Utopia...and oh yeah, a bit or two of news might get covered as well.

Radio Free Skaro # 52 - The Art of Blinksmanship
Episode Duration: 0 days, 1 hours, 6 minutes and 56 secondsWith a surfeit of news, the premiere of the Sarah Jane Adventures and Blink, one of the seasons best episodes, as the subject of our commentary, the Three Who Rule had plenty to shoot their mouths off about. And shoot they did, though not always on topic.

Radio Free Skaro #51 - the Podcast of Blood
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 58 minutes and 54 secondsDespite Chris (the "Third Guy") being set upon by some sort of throat ailment, the RFS crew set forth and valiantly commentated on "The Family of Blood," the second part of Paul Cornell's season 3 magnum opus and a corking bit of Who into the bargain. We also miraculously rescued 14 minutes of news from the doldrums of between-season uneventfulness.

Radio Free Skaro #50 - Human, Naturally
Episode Duration: 0 days, 1 hours, 6 minutes and 34 secondsA truly momentous milestone, as we celebrate our 50th episode of Radio Free Skaro with...well, nothing really. Nothing, that is, except a corking bit of episode-ery known as "Human Nature," one of the highlights of Season 3. Join Warren, Steven, and Chris (otherwise known as the Third Guy) as they expostulate on the fine craftwork and Edwardian elegance of the first portion of Paul Cornell's masterwork.

Radio Free Skaro #49 - is about 42
Episode Duration: 0 days, 1 hours, 6 minutes and 32 secondsSteven, Warren and the supremely jaunty Chris tackle 42, a madcap romp through a spaceship hurtling towards a dying sun, for this the 49th episode of Radio Free Skaro. We also tackle the recent announcement of a "gap year" for the series involving three specials in 2009, along with confirmation of the fourth and fifth series. And of course we ramble off-topic as usual about matters of great import.

Radio Free Skaro #48: The Lazurus Meandering
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsThe Third Guy returns as Chris Burgess joins us once again for our take on "The Lazurus Experiment", a Seaon 3 time-filler redeemed by cool scorpion effects and the fact that it came right after a disastrous Dalek two-parter. We went pretty far off-topic in this one, even breaching the shores of the dreaded Coronation Street (at length), but hopefully our jib-jabber will prove somewhat entertaining nonetheless.

Radio Free Skaro #47 -Mehvolution of the Daleks
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsThe episode under fire in our commentary may be nothing to write home about, but this week's episode of Radio Free Skaro was indeed special in that it included Chris Burgess, our perennial silent partner and Fifth Beatle. Chris threw in his two bits on Evolution of the Daleks (three guesses as to how he felt about this snoozefest) and managed to inspire awe and fright in both Warren and Steven with his vast and sinister knowledge of all things Whovian.

Radio Free Skaro #46 - Daleks in Meh-hattan
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 58 minutes and 26 secondsWarren and Steven tear into what was definitely the lowlight of the season, Daleks in Manhattan, which had all the potential for greatness but failed to live up to its promise every step of the way. At least it gave us ample ammunition for slagging during our commentary, which we did with great relish and abandon. We also cover bits and pieces of news, including the as of yet unconfirmed (but oh so tasty) rumour that Ben Kingsley might play Davros in Season 4.

Radio Free Skaro #45 - Gridlock commentary and other sundry bits
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsOne of our favorites from Season Three goes under the microscope as Warren and Steven subject "Gridlock" to their witty, nay brilliant commentary. We also veered off into a few other topics off the top, including "Life on Mars" (which Warren is watching and quite enjoying, thank you very much) and the differences between the look of British and American TV. Fore more detail on that subject, check out the discussion on Metafilter, found here: http://ask.metafilter.com/63462/Why-do-British-television-programs-look-different-than-American-programs Next week, expect some venomous bile as we watch and comment upon "Daleks in Manhattan," one of the lowlights of the season.

Radio Free Skaro #44 - the Shakespeare commentary
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 53 minutes and 20 secondsWarren and Steven wax lyrical as they watch the Shakespeare Code...which came across as quite entertaining when it was the second episode of a new and exciting season of Doctor Who, but after an epic season comes off as a somewhat smaller tale of wordsmithery and witchcraft. No matter, as our intrepid pair use the time allotted to ramble on about things Who and otherwise. Hey nonny nonny!

Radio Free Skaro #43 - Smith and Jones jaunty commentary
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsWith no new Who on the horizon for a good long while, we've decided to integrate our regular podcastian ramblings with some rather jaunty (and as usual, rabidly off-topic) commentary to go with each episode from Series 3, starting with this one, recorded during a viewing of "Smith and Jones." Now you can watch Doctor Who with our deep and meaningful musings about the goings-on on screen...at the same time! What an age we live in. Next up, jet packs and robot butlers.

Radio Free Skaro #42 - Life, the Universe, and Everything
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 44 minutes and 14 secondsWith precious little in the way of new Dr. Who to chew over, Warren and Steven seize upon the fortuitously named episode #42 of this fine podcast to genuflect on Douglas Adams, not only in regards to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy but also his contributions to Dr Who to computer gaming and to pioneering work on what would become the World Wide Web. Stay hoopy, and don't forget your towel!

Radio Free Skaro #41 - Last of the Meh
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsOur mortal enemy the echo once again victimized us, at least for the first half of the podcast. But it was either re-record everything (not an option at this late hour, and our schedule won't allow another time to record for the rest of the week) or just go with it and beg forgiveness. So we throw ourselves at the mercy of you, our fans, and remind you that we do this show for free. :) Anyway, we jabbered on about Lat of the Time Lords, which was not so good, as well as took a look at the season as a whole and up and coming news regarding season 4. Next up, Episode 42 (two weeks hence, Steven is a busy man) where we'll look at Douglas Adams contribution to both Who and the culture as a whole. Sorry about the echo. Sorry.

Radio Free Skaro #40 - the Drums! The Drums!
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsThe drums! Glimpses of Gallifrey, the Master at his hammy finest, a Prime Minister gone mad and a wizened Doctor...the Sound of Drums was a chaotic grab bag of fun. And so was this podcast, as Steven and Warren ramble with little rhyme or reason and speculate wildly as to the future of the show, the nature of the Toclafane, and other ponderous matters. We even managed to throw a couple of promos into the mix this time. Enjoy!

Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsThe title says it all....the latest episode of Doctor Who was indeed blissful. Fast pacing, incredible character moments, a stellar performance by David Tennant...and the return of the Master. Words fail us.....or rather, they don't, for about 46 minutes and change. Jaunty ramblings ahoy!

Radio Free Skaro #38: Blink!
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 43 minutes and 7 secondsWarren and Steven praise the thrills, chils, and statuary of Blink, the "Doctor Lite" episode that aired over the weekend across the pond. We also genuflect about the excellent episode of Dr Who Confidential that followed it, directed by and starring one David Tennant, an actor of little renown whom I'm sure will fade into well deserved obscurity soon. :) Along the way we're sidetracked into a discussion of Doctor Who spinoffs and other such ephemera, as well as speculation on next week's episode, "Utopia."

Radio Free Skaro #37 - Bloody Family
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsWarren and Steven are back to heap unrestrained praise (or, in Steven's case, somewhat reserved praise) on "The Family of Blood", the concluding episode of the two-part Doctor Who saga that began with last week's Human Nature", which in itself began from the Paul Cornell novel of the same name some time before. We also discuss next week's "Blink," and the inevitable finale to the season, which is sure to be a masterly set of episodes (heh).

Slight delay for Radio Free Skaro #37
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsDue to both of the hosts feeling under the weather, we postponed recording the show by a day. But if all goes according to plan, we'll convene via Skype tonight and discuss matters pertaining to the Family of Blood.

Radio Free Skaro #36 - Human Nature
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsOne of the best episodes of the new season and indeed the series, Human Nature is the subject of this week's podcast. Steven and Warren discuss the episode for a solid 30 minutes, and only rarely descend into their trademark digressions and Who-trivia-oneupmanship.

Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsAfter a week of meandering discussion to fill time, we're back with an actual episode to ponder and pontificate about, and so we banter back on forth about 42, Doctor Who's stab at a sorta-kinda real-time episode. We also branch off into discussion of a couple of upcoming episodes, but stay remarkably on course, given our penchant for digression.

Radio Free Skaro # 33 - That's one big spider
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsDr. Who returns to the tried and true with a nice little monster romp involving fountains of youth, genetic tomfoolery and a bit of the ultraviolence. Not to mention a corker of a trailer for the second half of the season. Some Eurovision nonsense is getting in the way of broadcasting the episode next week, so we've decided to make this an all-request show. Email, send mp3s, or do whatever else you can think of to help us create next week's DYI podcast.

Radio Free Skaro #32 - Daleks, Manhattan..ehh
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsDaleks, Manhattan, and a 1930's setting would seem to be a potent stew for some good Doctor Who episodin', but unfortunately the latest pepper-pot epic doesn't really amount to much. Freyburg and I am Steven muse upon the missed chances and minor triumphs of Evolution of the Daleks in Manhattan, then veer wildly off course to discuss Freyburg's recent trip to New York and the listener gathering held last week in Edmonton. Next week, spider creatures and the fountain of youth!

Radio Free Skaro episode 31 - Gridlicious
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsWarren and Steven are back and waxng lyrical on the brilliance that is "Gridlock", an episode that had every appearance of being a throwaway bit of fluff but instead turned into a slam-bang roller coaster ride, with one of the finest bits of acting David Tennant's put into the role thus far. Great effects, imaginative characters, humor and some genuinely moving moments make for one of the best bits o' Who in the new series. Lovely! Next week, the Daleks invade Manhattan, as does Warren. We'll probably skip the podcast next week and double up to cover both Dalek episodes at once.

Radio Free Skaro #30 - Defeat of the Echo People
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsAfter getting beaten soundly by the Internet gods on both episodes 29 and the first take of episode 30 of Radio Free Skaro, we finally had a bit of luck and were able to get a decent(ish) sounding recording out of our respective compurobots. We covered Smith and Jones, the Shakespeare Code, and veered al over the conversational map to parts unknown, as would any two jaunty fellows faced with take 3 of a podcast. These are the lengths we'll go to for you, dear listeners! Enjoy!
