Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastIn this week’s episode of Flight out of Gatwick, we discuss Season 4’s last three stories, The Macra Terror, The Faceless Ones and The Evil of the Daleks. Farewell, Ben and Polly. Hello, Victoria. Work hard and happily! (We know you will.)
Buy the stories!
Another season 4 podcast, another three incomplete stories. Sigh.
The surviving three episodes, The Faceless Ones 1 and 3 and The Evil of the Daleks 2, are all available in the Lost of Time box set. (Amazon US) (Amazon UK)
However all three stories exist as BBC audios, and can be bought on Audible.
The Macra Terror is, bizarrely, narrated by TV’s Colin Baker. (Audible US) (Audible UK). Even more bizarrely, a second version exists, narrated by the delightfully elfin Anneke Wills. (Audible US) (Audible UK)
The Faceless Ones is narrated by Frazer Hines. (Audible US) (Audible UK). And so is The Evil of the Daleks. (Audible US) (Audible UK).
The Macra Terror
The Goodies episode “Radio Goodies”, to which we all so hilariously refer, has its own Wikipedia entry. Amazing!
More weird 60s mind-control concerns arise in The Ipcress File (1965) (which is amazingly good).
The Faceless Ones
Benedict Cumberbatch stars in the BBC Radio sitcom Cabin Pressure, in which he plays the only pilot of the single-plane airline MJN Air.
So, it was the Refusians from The Ark who lost their identities in a galaxy accident. According to Meadows, the Chameleons lost their identities in “a gigantic explosion”. Which is much stupider, really.
The Evil of the Daleks
Before there was Upstairs, Downstairs, before there was Downton Abbey, we had The Forsyte Saga (1967). Does that account for Victoria Waterfield?
Deborah Watling had starred opposite George Baker (Full Circle) in Dennis Potter’s TV film Alice (1965), which looked at the strange and weirdly suspicious life of Alice in Wonderland’s author Charles Lutwitge Dodson.
Altered Vistas is a website which chronicles the history of Doctor Who in comic strips. They have created CG animated versions of all the TV Century 21 comic strips. Take a look at them here.
Picks of the Week
Brendan
Anneke Wills’s two autobiographies, Naked and Self-portrait, are currently out of print. New and second-hand copies are available from Amazon, however. (Amazon US) (Amazon UK).
Anneke’s In Focus can be preordered for its re-release early in 2015. (Amazon US) (Amazon UK)
Richard
The Orton Diaries are playwright Joe Orton’s hilarious account of the last eight months of his life — candid, funny and outrageous. And he mentions Doctor Who! We own him! (Amazon US) (Amazon UK)
Nathan
Volume 5 of El Sandifer’s TARDIS Eruditorum contains essays covering Tom Baker’s last four seasons on Doctor Who. (Amazon US) (Amazon UK)

2MTL 363: "Dark Water" Reviewed
Two-minute Time LordSometimes the BBC can't help but spoil the surprise. Sometimes the reveals aren't all that revealing. Sometimes you dismiss the obvious because it's too obvious. Sometimes it doesn't matter, because the episode is brilliant and even wickedly funny because there's no surprise.

#29 - Flatline
Who's OnPeople have been disappearing and there seems to be something draining energy from the TARDIS. Can the Doctor and Clara figure out what’s happening before it’s too late?
Join us as we discuss an episode that introduces a cool new monster in our review of “Flatline”!
The post #29 – Flatline appeared first on Who's On.

In The Forest of the Night
PodcasticaJohn is joined once again by Ernesto to discuss this week's episode! What did they think of the child actors? Will Clara ever stop lying? What's up with that red phone booth that pops up in at least two scenes? What was with the final scene?!
-
101 - Childrenesque
Arrow of TimeJust what we needed, an episode that features one of our “favorite” things, right up there with the production “style” of Steven “Moffat.” “In the Forest of the Night” starts off on the right foot with a William Blake reference, but then quickly becomes full of children, likely with sticky Jammie Dodger hands. There are also lots and lots of trees (at least four), but mostly nothing happens, so we end up speculating wildly about the next episode. Missy is the Rani? The Rani is the Master!? Clara is Handles!?! We’ve got to be right someday!
For Mogli‘s Fantastic Book Break, Dave brings us the obvious once again with Songs of Innocence and of Experience by William Blake. Check it out at Project Gutenberg!
For this week’s spooooky BooTube we have “Doctor Who – Can You Hear Them?” from user 2Scribble: http://youtu.be/-u9KcSKyMZw

Big Blue Box Podcast - Episode 16
The Doctor Who Big Blue Box PodcastHey Who fans! The news gets us in both good and bad moods but then our review of In the Forest of the Night gets us even grumpier. It's not all bad though, let's do this!
[powerpress]
The News
After we hyped up the re-opening of the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff last week BBC Worldwide go and cancel a load of Tardis set tours and put everyone on a downer, meh. The set tour is closed from 3rd - 23rd November and if you've already booked and it falls within those dates contact Crowd Source (or whoever you booked it through) and request a new date or a refund. Thank you to those who tweeted us their experiences so far and we hope you all get something sorted.
Silva Screen Records are releasing a 2-disc CD soundtrack of The Day of the Doctor and The Time of the Doctor to celebrate the show's 51st anniversary (yes, it's now 51 years, didn't the 50th celebrations go quickly?). Keep an eye on the Doctor Who Music site for pre-order details.
Doctor Who bags another award! This time the show has picked up a Welsh BAFTA (British Academy Cymru Award) for it's special effects. Excellent news and always a good thing when the show gets awarded for it's amazing talent behind the scenes.
"In the Forest of the Night" Review
This one brings us a bit deeper down I'm afraid, we really weren't fans of this episode and in our opinion this throws up the series' first true clunker. What could have been a very good episode based on an interesting story the entire episode was let down by poor writing, poor performances throughout and other poor elements such as visual effects and props. We wanted to like it, we really did but it just doesn't work.
Thanks for stepping into the Tardis for episode 16. We look forward to chatting all things Who next time. Until then - Allons-y!

Episode 26: Mr. Hinchcliffe Presents
Stories From The Vortex: A Doctor Who Audio Adventures Podcast
Just in time for Halloween, Matthew Kresal and Mary Lang are reviewing Big Finish's hotly anticapted and recently released Phillip Hinchcliffe Presents box-set. With its promise of recreating an era (in)famous for its "tea-time horror", topics discussed in looking at the two stories that make up the box-set (The Ghosts of Gralstead and The Devil's Armada) include each story's extended length, calls back to the Hinchcliffe era, Tom Baker's performance and more.
You can find the podcast via our website storiesfromthevortex.blogspot.com or on iTunes. If you'd like to send in feedback to the podcast you can do so at feedback.vortex@yahoo.com and you can join the podcasts's Facebook group. We're a proud member of the Doctor Who Podcast Alliance.

PODCAST 023 - Nightline
Diddly Dum PodcastFor this double review of "Flatline" and "In the Forest of the Night", the Diddly Dumbers have repaired to a sylvan glade. But the peaceful location belies a lurking menace. Which of us hasn’t shivered at the idea of growling in the bushes?
Each new podcast seems to reveal another shocking example of shameless thievery on Steven Moffat’s part. You know that “how can I have been so blind?” feeling when the penny drops and something is laid bare which has been staring you in the face for years? That’s how our podcasters felt this week when The Him (Al’s eminence grise) pointed out what now seems so obvious – that the idea behind every Series 8 episode of Doctor Who can be traced back to an original episode of “Danger Mouse”. The Three Who Drool discuss this outrage.
Along the way, we cover the role of the Three Day Week in The Rev’s conception, Doc having to wait over 40-odd years for his scariest ever experience in Doctor Who, ten foots and snickleways, The Rev finding that the day can be as scary as the night, has normally lovely Sigourney Weaver ever been a more of a total bitch than her character in “Working Girl”, comics as a form of literacy, Al finding Judge Dredd standing next to him at the urinal, the best way not to be killed by tigers and “Peppa Pig” as a prequel to “Animal Farm”.
As an erotic climax, Al finally explains his theory of Doctor Who as Greek tragedy.

SHOW NOTES
We mourn the passing of the sublimely lovely Linda Bellingham. From “The Sweeney” to “All Creatures Great and Small” and reaching her apogee as the Inquisitor throughout the run of “Trial of a Time Lord” before going on to show Peggy Mitchell how to be a proper gangsteress in “The Bill”. In her later career, she became stereotyped as a strong and versatile actress but it’s her work in the field of Oxo which is how we like to remember her.
The Rev pays tribute to the divine Lynda on his own blog.
Big Finish "Tom Baker at 80'' CD
“Diana” is an American sitcom that aired on NBC during the 1973-1974 television season that was created by Leonard Stern and starred Diana Rigg in her first American television series.
Leonard Sachs, as compere of “The Good Old Days” was surely the inspiration for Henry Gordon Jago.
The power cuts of the 1970s were his parents’ inspiration for The Rev himself.
Captain Mainwaring plays the bagpipes 27 mins into the “If The Cap Fits” episode of Dad’s Army.
Al has written a column in print issue #406 of Starburst magazine.
Lotte Lenya played Colonel Rosa Klebb who got frisky with Daniela Bianchi in “From Russia With Love”
A Spirograph is a geometric drawing toy that produces mathematical roulette curves. It was developed by British engineer Denys Fisher and first sold in 1965.
The form of pantograph which Doc was struggling to name was, of course, the Sketch-a-Graph.
Rising Damp is a British sitcom produced by Yorkshire Television for ITV and originally broadcast from 1974 through 1978. Starring inter alia Leonard Rossiter and Frances de la Tour.
Brian Sibley is a British writer and broadcaster who wrote the 26 episode radio adaptation of “Lord of the Rings” first broadcast on BBC Radio Four in 1981 and which starred Ian Holm as Frodo, later to play Bilbo in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy.
“The Land of Narnia” by Brian Sibley
Christopher Fairbank who played annoying foreman Fenton in “Flatline” is perhaps known best (certainly to The Rev) for his role as Moxey in “Auf Wiedersehen Pet”.
“Nocturnal Activities” by John Williams from “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”.
Aussie Rob@WhoWars, who delights in the Diddly Dumbers having three distinct accents, has his own Doctor Who/Star Wars crossover podcast which is a must.

“Theatre of Blood” is a 1973 horror film starring Vincent Price as vengeful actor Edward Lionheart (and Diana Rigg as his daughter Edwina). Among other Shakeapearian deaths, Lionheart punishes theatre critic, Robert Morley, by cooking his pet poodles a la Titus Andronicus. Vincent Price also used to ask people to pass the mustard.
“The Abominable Dr Phibes” is a 1971 British horror film starring Vincent Price who is inspired in his murderous spree by the Ten Plagues of Egypt from the Old Testament. It was followed by “Dr Phibes Rises Again”.
Dave Gibbons is appointed the UK’s first comics laureate.
Comics Literacy Awareness (CLAw) is an exciting new literacy charity formed by a group of passionate and highly experienced trustees from the fields of education and comics. The mission of CLAw is to dramatically improve the literacy levels of UK children through the medium of comics and graphic novels. CLAw will also aim to raise the profile, image and respectability of comics and graphic novels as both a valid art form and as works of literature.

Judge Minty – a not for profit fan film.
The Phoenix Comic contains Adam Murphy’s “Corpse Talk: Digging up history one hero at a time”.
“Here Come the Double Deckers” was a 17-part British children’s TV series from 1970-71 revolving around the adventures of seven children whose den was an old red double-decker London bus in an unused junk yard. Scooper, the leader of the group, was played by a young Peter Firth who would go on to play Harry Pearce in the BBC One show “Spooks“.
The Diddly Dum Podcast would like at this point to declare an interest. We hold no interests in Ted Baker. However, since Friend of the Show Tariq has suggested that Doc’s visit to the HQ might have been explained by his being on acid at the time, we would like to provide evidence that their front door is indeed in the middle of a giant lobster, visitors to their Reception are indeed greeted by a barking animatronic Golden Retriever, and their lifts are indeed just like Roald Dahl’s Great Glass Elevator in having fun buttons all over their walls.
“Danger Mouse” is a British children’s animated television series which was produced by Cosgrove Hall Films for Thames Television. It features the eponymous Danger Mouse, an English mouse who works as a secret agent. It is also clearly the inspiration for Series 8 of Doctor Who. Take a look at episode 5 of “Day of the Suds” where Nelson’s Column has been toppled. In “Time Slip”, Danger Mouse goes back in time to meet Robin Hood. Are you listening, Mr Gatiss? And do we need to say any more about “Danger Mouse on the Orient Express“?
“Doctor Who and the Song of Goats” – Al’s Greek tragedy theory from his own blog.
The Diddly Dum podcast thanks anyone we've pinched stuff from and respects the copyright of etc etc.
