Our weekly flight through Tom Baker’s first season continues with an episode made entirely of thirty foot thick reinforced concrete. That’s right, it’s time for that 1975 classic, Genesis of the Daleks!

    Buy the story!

Genesis of the Daleks was released on DVD way back in 2006. (Amazon US) (Amazon UK)

Commedia dell’arte is a genre of theatrical comedy featuring an array of various stock characters. It dates from 16th century Italy, but is based on a tradition that goes all the way back to Greek New Comedy from the end of the fourth century BC. So does that make Davros just the latest iteration of Pantalone?

Severin is the hero of Venus in Furs (1870), a novella written by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, who gave his name to something called masochism. Probably best not to look that word up on Google.

The Time Lord is dressed as Death from Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1957). Here is a version by French and Saunders. And this version comes from the first season of The Micallef Programme.

Fans of having no idea of what is going on will enjoy this article on Jacques Lacan from the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Sadly, I’m unable to locate the Parliamentary speech made by a Conservative MP in the 1990s, in which he quoted Davros’s virus speech from Part 5 of this story. Fact fans will be able to corroborate its historicity, however, by referring to Miles and Wood’s About Time volume 4. (Amazon US) (Amazon UK)

Episode 39 - Before podcasts, before cosplay, before the discovery of time travel, there was…NOTHING! Well, not entirely. In ye olden days, when fans went to meetings riding on the backs of pterodactyls there was…the (PAPER) FANZINE! Within those hallowed and now yellowed pages, fans would gather together in a papery, non-digital environment to express their ideas, love (and hate – some things will never change!) about the show. One of the very best of these was none other than TSV, the august fanzine from across the ditch in New Zealand. Mark and Rob chat with TSV editor Paul Scoones. In between bouts of inhaling duplicator fumes, we reminisce about producing fanzines before and after desktop publishing era. We examine how some contributors ascended to the realm of the professional novelist and put the internet in the dock for once again killing something that is fine and previous – damn its eyes! Plus we also touch on Doctor Who comics and Paul's definitive history of them in his book and his involvement in the recovery of The Lion and his work on the DVD Production notes. Paul Scoones's website: Features a blog and additional pages with details about the Comic Strip Companion and the DVD production information text. www.paulscoones.com TSV / New Zealand Doctor Who Fan Club: Includes Archive section featuring material from many past issues of TSV, and the fan novelisations. 00:00 The Who Wars Podcast Theme

00:48 The Front Page; Rob @WhoWars kicks off this episode with discussion of this being our biggest ever, from the point of view that it features an interview between Andy @skaromedia and one of the classic era Doctors from Doctor Who, Colin Baker, which is as big on the Doctor Who side of the fence as, say, a Carrie Fisher or Mark Hammil interview would be on the Star Wars side of the fence; San Diego Comic Con and the various Star Wars and Doctor Who announcements there; Doctor Who had a panel (includes audio clip), the announcement of a Lego game (includes audio clip), and a Series 9 trailer (which gets discussed in the following segment); Star Wars had a panel, a behind-the-scenes video (includes audio clip), the release of Dark Disciple by Christie Golden, based on unfinished Clone Wars episodes (reviwed later in this episode), and a symphonic concert of John Williams' Star Wars music (includes audio clip); Welcome to Who Wars #36.

11:00 TRAILER - DOCTOR WHO - Andy @skaromedia Al No @TheMeandTheHim Rob @WhoWars J.R. Southall @JR_Southall Kate @Kamiduu Lex @Lexerness Elizabeth Carter, The Face of Little Bo and The Him discuss the new Doctor Who Series 9 trailer. Do we want to kiss it to death? Listen in to find out. This is also a sneak peak of many of the people involved with the Who Wars Network's "Doctor Who Review Show" that's coming out later in the year when Doctor Who returns to our TV screens. Stay tuned!

26:26 BOOK REVIEW - STAR WARS - Matt Neve @swcanonrebel and Elaine Tveit @tveitlight25 discuss the new release Star Wars novel, Dark Disciple, based on unfinished Clone Wars episodes. This review is spoiler-free (depending on your interpretation of spoilers of course), and might help your purchase decision.

53:50 FEATURE - CLONE WARS - Rob @WhoWars continues to watch the Clone Wars TV series in chronological order. Here, the chronology take him back to the start for 1.1 Ambush Have you seen it? Tell us what you thought: hello@whowars.net

    1:01:30 COMIC - DOCTOR WHO - 10th Doctor #12 (Titan) by Kate @Kamiduu

    1:05:31 COMIC - DOCTOR WHO - 11th Doctor #14 (Titan) by Lex @Lexerness

1:15:00 FEATURE/INTERVIEW - DOCTOR WHO - Andy @skaromedia helped to host the recent Hull Comic Con. Here, he speaks with Doctor Who cosplayers at the event; Derek, Robert, Melissa, Heather, Brian and Elizabeth (from 1:17:30) and rounds things off by hosting a Colin Baker (6th Doctor, 1984-1986) interview onstage (from 1:26:01). As mentioned in 'The Front Page' of this podcast, the sound for the interview comes from multiple sources. If you initially find it hard to listen to without headphones, do stick with it as a better sound source kicks in (1:28:43) for the majority of the interview. Enjoy.

2:07:05 - The Back Page; closing remarks from Rob @WhoWars, followed by a discussion of whether it's possible to have too much Star Wars in the decade ahead. This was a discussion Rob recently kicked off on Twitter - and was perhaps misunderstood in the process. At the end of this discussion, he reads an email from listener Baz Hood on the topic of the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG that Rob recently blogged about on WhoWars.net

2:27:36 The Who Wars Podcast Credits (including details on how to get in touch with the show).

Sadly, I'm unable to locate the Parliamentary speech made by a Conservative MP in the 1990s, in which he quoted Davros's virus speech from Part 5 of this story. Fact fans will be able to corroborate its historicity, however, by referring to Miles and Wood's About Time volume 4. (Amazon US) (Amazon UK)

Our weekly flight through Tom Baker's first season continues with an episode made entirely of thirty foot thick reinforced concrete. That's right, it's time for that 1975 classic, Genesis of the Daleks!

    Buy the story!

Genesis of the Daleks was released on DVD way back in 2006. (Amazon US) (Amazon UK)

    Links and notes

Commedia dell'arte is a genre of theatrical comedy featuring an array of various stock characters.

The Time Lord is dressed as Death from Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957). Here is a version by French and Saunders. And this version comes from the first season of The Micallef Programme.

Fans of having no idea of what is going on will enjoy this article on Jacques Lacan from the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

    06:30 (GMT) - 10 Jul 2015

Hey Who fans, it’s episode 49! Some really cool news items to go through then it’s pirates and treasure for this week’s review.

    The News

There’s been some initial buzz for Who fans since the reveal that Doctor Who is to feature in the upcoming LEGO Dimensions game. That news was trumped when this week a new video surfaced showing lots of Who gameplay, consisting of 12th Doctor malarky, Tardis interior (which looks awesome) plus a regeneration sequence showing all of the Doctor’s, right back to Hartnell, seemingly as playable characters. We can’t wait for this one.

We could be in for an episode with some cool Douglas Adams references in Series 9. Some pics have popped up showing some of the latest sets and one features three Tardis Blue coloured bottles with the words “Part 10″ but also the words “Answer to the question of life, the universe and everything in the galaxy.”, with some Gallifreyan behind them. There’s also references to 42, which we all know as the answer to the question of life, the universe and everything. These could be some cool setup’s for Series 9 or they could be just small hat tips to Douglas.

The official DW Instagram account has been putting up some very cryptic images of late. Blurry and out of focus shots with alien makeup being applied, haunted mansions, strange alien symbols and plenty of other stuff. They’re very good at teasing us right now.

“The Curse of the Black Spot” Review

We were looking forward to this one as hey, who doesn’t like pirates but do we get plenty of grrrr and sea shanty with this Matt Smith episode or is it a bit wet and damp?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – Which floor on Satellite 5 was Medical Nonemergency? The answer is 16.

This week’s question is – When the Doctor first met Amy where did he say the swimming pool was? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

Thanks me harty’s for sticking with us through episode 49 and thank you as always for your great comments, please keep them coming. Enjoy all the Who news still to come out of Comic Con and until next week – Allons-y!
