  • Who's He? Podcast #84 And I live by the river

    18 November 2012 (7:28pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 1 hour, 26 minutes and 18 seconds

After a no show with the podcast last week, episode 84 finally gets made but not what was advertised in the previous episode. Oh no, they've gone and done an audio commentary instead and this month it's Dalek Invasion of Earth episodes 1 to 3. During this commentary hear, feel and hit Tony as he makes Phil deploy the dreaded swear beep for the second time in the podcasts history! Thrill as Paul wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, and gasp in horror as Phil makes jokes about onanism! But make no mistake, any diversity training they might have had went straight of the window!
And in the news this week, the Doctor Who Christmas Special prologue and trailer aired on Children In Need where we all found out the title of this years special, Doctor Who is up for a Peoples Choice award, Steven Moffat wins a Writers Guild Award (though none of them can figure out what for) and Alex Kingston reads the Angels Kiss that they all treat with complete indifference.

    4 November 2012 (7:25pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 1 hour, 0 minutes and 10 seconds

This week the podcast starts off strangely...there's no Paul! Yes Phil is left to his own devices to begin with as he goes through this weeks news items which include casting news for series 7b, the Live+7 viewing figures for series 7a, a BFI screening of a lost Doctor Who episode and a brief sojourn to Omegas Tat Corner.
But when Paul finally shows up, they get stuck into another audio story, The Ghosts of N-Space, a story so convoluted and filled with ethnic stereotypes, Paul can't help but have a Dolmio day, whilst Phil lets rip with his best Sandra Dickinson impression. Still they have a good time even if no-one else does. Now, you can put the dinner on, I'll be home in 20 minutes.

It's audio commentary time and this month it's the turn of Paul McGann in Doctor Who: The Movie. However, Tony was late to the recording as he hadn't had his dinner (and you don't want to be in the same room as Tony when he's hungry) so Paul and Phil cracked on with the news without him, which took all of 5 minutes as it was a very slow week for news.
Eventually Tony turned up and they got on with the task in hand. In this episode, you will find Smurfs, little known facts about Paul McGann, Popeye The Sailor Man and the hazards of transporting free range chickens.

This week, Phil & Paul cast their eye over The Forest Of The Dead, the conclusion to River Song's opening story in Series 4 of Doctor Who. It's another enjoyable story of the reviewing pair but it's not long before they air their gripes about where it went wrong. During the course of their conversation this week, they go wildly off topic and start discussing Steven Moffats overall contribution to Doctor Who and whether his writing was better before he became show runner.
However, all of this is tempered by the news that we have lost another Doctor Who actor in the form of Caroline John and the lads take the opportunity to celebrate her character, Liz Shaw.

This week Phil and Paul take a look back at the Agatha Christie murder mystery romp The Unicorn And The Wasp. This is an episode that neither Paul nor Phil were particularly interested in watching again even though fandom would tell them this is a good story. Has time changed their minds? Will the comedic aspects of the script cheer them up or will they remain their usual miserable selves? (Well, Phil is the miserable one really).

Episode Duration: 49 minutes and 52 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

In this weeks episode, the reviewing partnership of Phil & Paul take a look back at the ...ahem...well regarded series 4 story The Doctors Daughter. OK, I can't keep up the pretence any longer, it's probably one of the least well regarded stories in this series and Paul & Phil do little to change anyones opinion. But they go through the motions and try as they might, they can't help but be nothing but critical of this story, so don't expect many laughs this week!! However, after much analysis, they reach the conclusion that the only thing that thing that could have saved this story is......WILLIAM SHATNER!!
And in this weeks news, the first group of guests has been announced for Gallifrey 2013, series 7 production news and air date rumours and in what has become a regular feature Paul & Phil promise to listen to some Big Finish audios!

    Direct Podcast Download

Dim the lights, close all the windows and dust down your DVD players as it's audio commentary time! This month, Paul, Tony and Phil are tackling the behemoth that is Warriors Of The Deep. They've tried this one before and failed miserably, so they've deployed all sorts of lucky tokens about their persons to make sure this goes off without a hitch. Even then it was still touch and go. Also, in this weeks news Steven Moffat wants to keep the Doctors new companion a complete secret, a little bit of DVD news and the lads get angry at certain 'fans' reactions to the airing this week of the Blue Peter Script To Screen winners story, Good As Gold. Now stop laughing at the Myrka, you know how fragile he is!!

All this plus Phil tries to pronounce Pobol Y Cwm and fails abysmally while Paul laughs.

  • Who's He? Podcast #61 They got little cars

    14 May 2012 (9:08pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 57 minutes and 39 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

In this weeks show, Phil & Paul continue with their series 4 retrospective with a look back The Sontaran Stratagem. They both try really hard this week to be positive and for the most part they succeed. However, with a snivelling wretch of a boy genius the Doctors new found dislike for U.N.I.T., it doesn't take them long to start getting a little bit picky. But in this weeks news, the announcement that episode 1 of series 7 will be premiered in August and Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill have completed their final scenes give the two of them plenty to discuss and go off topic about. Please be warned that during the course of this weeks episode, the words "twunt" and "bukakke" are used with wanton abandon.

Episode Duration: 55 minutes and 45 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

Paul is back from his holidays feeling refreshed and gets straight back into the swing of things and joins Phil to look at Planet of The Ood. Phil finds this one a bit of a slog to review but livens things up for himself by doing a Sid James impression, while Paul concentrates on the plot and the social messages that this episode was trying to convey. Also as a special treat, Tony joins Phil & Paul for the news section which was recorded in the pub while celebrating Paul's birthday. However, Tony being Tony, he gets easily distracted and goes hunting for alien lifeforms in a bowl of wasabi peanuts and Phil gets in another impression, this time the Kinder egg advert from 1980's. Whilst Paul is on his holidays, Phil enlists the help of new friend to the show Stephen Prescott from the rather excellent A Madman With A Box Podcast to discuss The Fires of Pompeii. During the discussion, Stephen educates Phil on Latin textbooks and they both go wildly off tangent and delve into the merits of RTD versus The Moff and whether longstanding fans requests for classic monsters such as Ice Warriors and Zygons to return to the show would a be good thing. Also, in a very short news section, John Barrowman wants Captain Jack to return to Doctor Who, more Daleks and an actress who once appeared in Doctor Who nearly 50 years ago reaches the grand age of 100. It's that time of the month again when the Who's He? team turn their attentions towards another audio commentary and this month it's Day Of The Daleks. Once again Phil and Paul are joined by Tony for his monthly turn behind the microphone and as usual he lets loose with his little known "facts" on what really went on with the actors and behind the scenes stories that made up the production of this classic Doctor Who story. However, Tony took it upon himself to go through puberty again during the recording of this episode, which Phil and Paul constantly remind him of. Also during the course of recording, Phil gets misty eyed at the sight of a young Katy Manning and they also introduce what has to be the shortest news section in the history of this podcast.

This is it folks, the end of our 2009 specials retrospective with a look back at The End Of Time Part 2. And this week, Phil and Paul are once again joined by the excellent Martyn Havell from the Badwilf Podcast. They remain upbeat throughout this episode and talk about all the good things that this story......I'm sorry, that's a lie, they didn't like it then and they don't like it now. No surprises there then! Well, they do find a couple of nice things to say which usually involves Bernard Cribbins. Also in a very slow news week, Phil manages to drive away every listener the podcast has and Paul delivers the truth on what the Doctors voting habits are and how he is half the racist that Postman Pat is. Yes, it's a shocking tabloid style expose that doesn't include the words "romp" or "sordid".

After the highs of last weeks official convention, we hit the lows with The End of Time Part 1 in the continuation of the 2009 Specials retrospective. Unfortunately this episode contains nothing but Paul and Phil voicing their disappointment and frustration at this very woeful episode of Doctor Who but do find time to extol the virtues of having Bernard Cribbins to liven things up. They also go off topic and discuss how the Master has been portrayed over the years and in this weeks news, more series 7 production snippets, the bad smell that is David Yates and the Doctor Who movie and Daleks. Lots of Daleks. All this plus Paul takes over the show as Phil has been moonlighting rather a lot.

And after a slow start with the commentary, they get into their stride and Tony gives inside information on William Hartnell's on set demands (which could be complete lies) and all three of them do caveman impressions.

This week Phil and Paul travel back in time and give their opinions on the next 2009 special, The Waters of Mars. Do they think it still stands up as the classic that it is purported to be or is it another clunker following on from the Planet of The Dead? All I will say is that for once, they both agree! Admittedly this could make for a very dull podcast. Also, the news this week sheds light on how the production of series 7 is coming along, the casting rumour mill and the sad news of the passing of another Who actor.

The reviewing duo of of Phil and Paul press on with the next phase of their retrospective with a look at the first of the 2009 specials, Planet of The Dead. This is a most divisive podcast and Paul rather enjoys it and Phil detests it but all this makes Phil wax lyrical about the rich tapestry of the human race but veers dangerously close to one those awful episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation where Data explores what it's like to be human. And in the news this week, series 7 casting news, the end of the Adventure Games and Doctor Who tat.

Right, they're doing Time And The Rani this time. Ok? They're sorry, really sorry. The boys really suffer during this one, finding not much to be happy about but manage to keep their sanity by comparing the story's characters to long forgotten 80's pop groups, Rainbow and reminiscing about chocolate bars from yesteryear. And in the news this week, more guests for confirmed for the Doctor Who Convention in March, series 7 production news and fan slash fiction has become legit. All this, plus Bonnie Langford screaming.

Tis the season to be jolly!! Well, not really to be honest but there is a bit of snow on the ground, so it's a good time for Paul and Phil to have a look back at A Christmas Carol, the 2010 Christmas special. Fortunately after over a year, they both still really enjoy this festive offering and Phil tries to make connections to M.R. James Christmas ghost stories and The Eagle comic while Paul insists that they try their hardest not to pick holes in the story. Meanwhile in the news, writers and directors are confirmed for Series 7, guest news for the Doctor Who Convention, some Doctor Who tat and Phil plugs other podcasts.

Or EVAH as the youth of today like to spell it. And in this weeks news, Doctor Who tat and a fake Matt Smith proposes to his girlfriend. Who wasn't a fake, she's real.

Also, in this weeks news, Matt Smith & Karen Gillan triumph at the National Television Awards, toy and DVD news and the latest update to the Official Doctor Who Convention that has got Phil and Paul (and a few others besides) a little perplexed. It's audio commentary time again! This week, the lads bring part you the second part of their commentary for The Invasion Parts 5 to 8. This time, they run out steam as Tony was all facted out and Phil resorts to making sexist remarks about women of the sixties (and tries to justify it) whilst Paul keeps a dignified silence. Tony also does something that makes Phil swear which results in the use of a 'beep', the first in the history of this podcast.

It's audio commentary time folks!! This month the commentary trio of Phil, Paul and Tony tackle the 2nd Doctor story, The Invasion Parts 1 to 4. During this audio romp through this classic Patrick Troughton story, the lads discuss such weighty topics as Tobias Vaughn's unhealthy obsession with watching his henchmen on the toilet, Sparky The Magic Piano, action figures of the Queen and Tony's disappointment at animated skirts blowing in the wind. All this plus Doctor Who news from the last week where we also discover Tony's seedy private life.

After last weeks show, the lads are back in their comfort zone with their continuation of their series 5 retrospective and this week it's the turn of The Lodger. However, not all went according to plan, as they were beset by technical problems, which made each other think their connection had dropped which lead to a bit of confusion. But once things got back on track, they rattled though but couldn't help but keep making constant comparisons to Closing Time (well, Phil did anyway) and why discovering Matt Smiths comedic talents in this story was a slippery slope for the programme makers.

In a change from the usual programme, the Who's He? team bring you the Who's He? Podcast Awards 2011, celebrating the best and the worst that Doctor Who and Torchwood had to offer over the last year in a star studded show from the Norwich Theatre Royal (though this may be a lie). The lads apologise in advance for the tongue in cheek approach but unfortunately there are no refunds as they need the money to get out of the country. Thanks to: Josef Kenny for the Doctor Who theme remix.

Stuffed full of turkey and Christmas cheer (that means booze), Phil & Paul let rip on this years Doctor Who Christmas special, The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe. Did they like what they saw or were they not that struck on this years festive offering? As well giving their opinion on the special, they go wildly off tangent and start discussing Doctor Who Confidential (again!) and also announce the next podcast from the Who's He? team. All this plus the latest news that's now over a week out of date. So that would make it all the latest olds then.

They also give sound advice on what to do with the carcass of a dead giant Space Turkey that can feed an entire village for months. Also, in the news this week, the Ponds are leaving Doctor Who, no two part stories in series 7, more movie rumblings and the first classic Who DVD releases of 2012. This week, Paul and Phil take a look back at Cold Blood in the continuation of their retrospective of series 5. However, they are little distracted this week as shortly before they started recording, official confirmation came through from the BBC that two long lost episodes of Doctor Who had been rediscovered. And what with the announcement this week of a Doctor Who game for consoles and the PC, Phil was on cloud nine. Pity then that they had to talk about a bit of a damp squib of a Who story afterwards. It ruined the mood somewhat.

After two weeks of audio commentary, Phil & Paul return to reviewing duties with a look back at The Hungry Earth. However, neither of them can work up much enthusiasm for this story as not a lot really happens apart from some gaping holes in logic. So the result is an underwhelming and rather dull podcast. Sorry folks. But during this weeks news items, Phil makes his own entertainment by convincing Paul that he's always wanted to keep fish in a Doctor Who themed aquarium.
We also have to apologise for the sound quality in the news section as Phil had his microphone on the wrong setting. The berk.

And in the news, the final total on the auction of Matt Smiths Doctor Who costume for Children in Need and the continuing saga of the planned Doctor Who movie. It's that time of the month! The Who's He? 3 are back with an audio commentary for The Talons of Weng-Chiang, episodes 1 to 3. And as last month, Tony gets really excited with his facts but this time runs out of steam after episode 1. As Phil and Paul try desperately to calm him down, they valiantly try to continue with their own version of events. They also go through the news this week that a Doctor Who film is in the offing and also announce that the Who's He? Podcast will be attending the official convention next year and talk about the trailer for the Christmas special. And Tony gets to to hear Let's Save Confidential by No Touch Pod which fair takes his breath away.
