• Verity! Episode 35 - Time Lords: Bureaucrats, Baddies, Rogues, & Reprobates

12 February 2014 (1:30pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 1 hour, 21 minutes and 31 seconds

Direct Podcast Download

This week’s villains hail from the Doctor’s very own planet, Gallifrey. Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Tansy as we talk about various Time Lord evildoers. Why are so many of the renegades so evil? Is it something about Time Lord society? The fact that they make their children stare into the abyss? Who’s the worst of the lot? Who’s the most interesting?

There’s a lot to cover here, especially since we spend some time oohing and aahing over the 12th Doctor’s costume before we get on with things. You’ll note that we don’t talk too much about the Master or the Rani. That’s ‘cause we’ve covered both of those fine miscreants in previous episodes. Do dip back and take a listen if you haven’t already!

Episode Duration: 30 minutes and 28 seconds

Direct Podcast Download

Happy 2014 everyone! We hope your first week of the new year has treated you well. We also hope you're ready for a whole new year, a new series if you will, of Verity! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Tansy as we let you in on what we have in store for you this year. You'll certainly get reviews of new Doctor Who episodes (whenever they finally air), but in addition to that, we've got a whole new theme to cover! We hope you're even half as excited about it as we are.

It strikes me that we're filled with hope. I suppose that's right and proper for the beginning of a new year and a new venture. So in that vein, we hope you'll join us!

It's official. 2013 is over, and so is the tenure of Matt Smith as the Doctor. Once again, join ALL the Verities: Deb, Erika, Katrina, Liz, Lynne, and Tansy, as we discuss Matt's final episode. Tansy's daughter Raeli wanted her to tell everyone that she got The Abominable Snowmen Target novelisation, & the one Tansy is reading to Jemima is The Ice Warriors. Episode Duration: 1 hour, 8 minutes and 55 seconds

Direct Podcast Download

Though it pains us to say it (some more than others), the time of our beloved Matt Smith's tenure as the Doctor is almost at an end. (By the time you get around to this, it may well be over.) Join ALL of the Verities(!) Deb, Erika, Katrina, Liz, Lynne, and Tansy, as we discuss why we think he's been so successful in the role and reminisce about our favorite 11th-Doctor stories. We're all excited about Peter Capaldi, but we can't help being sad to see such a wonderful Doctor say farewell.

It's another extra-long Extra! as our holiday gift to you. (Or maybe it's just that we have a lot to say, and when ALL SIX of us are together it takes even longer to say it!)

4 December 2013 (6:00pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 1 hour, 3 minutes and 31 seconds

This week's episode feels more reverent than most, which seems fitting, given the subject matter. Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Lynne as we have an almost NPR-style chat about what we enjoyed in this "love letter to Doctor Who." We all enjoyed it to varying degrees, but as you might expect, some of us had wee quibbles with it. Generally very wee, though. Think of this ep as a mellow way to ease out of the giant (sometimes exhausting) squee-fest that these past few weeks have been.

Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Tansy as we get happy about Who-things, gush about McGann, and find representative aspects where we least expected them. We cover our reactions to "The Night of the Doctor" and our impressions of "Planet of Giants" as a representative story for the first Doctor. Perhaps not a common choice, but one that made for a rollicking discussion!

Woo hoo! This week Deb, Erika, Katrina, Liz, and Lynne join the ranks of gleeful fans around the world as we celebrate the return of nine previously-lost second Doctor episodes! We just happen to have reached dear old 2 in our countdown, so we threw out the story we planned for and decided "The Web of Fear" is a great representative story. Though maybe not all of us were quite as squeeful about it as expected.

Of course we can't help but talk about "The Enemy of the World" a bit too. It's all just SO EXCITING!

Liz plays with Sutekh and her Pyramids of Mars playset!
Erika is in love with the new Sunspot song, "Arthuriana" (especially the Doctor Who bits)!
Deb is excited Traffic Experiment is releasing our theme tune on vinyl! And met Alisa Stern, aka The Doctor Puppet, at NYCC!

We're back to talking Doctors this week, but perhaps not in the way you expected. Join Erika, Kat, Liz, and Tansy as we discuss those actors who played the Doctor non-canonically! *gasp* Yes, there are plenty of performances out there that don't fall under the umbrella of what went out on BBC1. More than some of us realized! Certainly more than some of us cared about.

As you may have noticed, we're sans Deb this week. With no one (but the hapless Erika) to reign in the troops, see just how far things go off the rails. (Actually, we remain pretty much on track until near the very end.)

(And despite the title of this episode, I'm afraid we don't actually dip back into the Virgin New Adventures and talk about that shadowy figure from Gallifrey's ancient past who may or may not have some direct connection to the Doctor. If you want to hear about that, check out this episode of The Doctor Who Book Club Podcast.)

With the fandom explosion(s) over the announcement of Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor, it's time for another Important Conversation on Verity! Join Deb, Erika, Kat, Lynne, and Tansy as we talk (and disagree--surprise, surprise) about what it means to be a Doctor Who fan. We say "boo" to meanness, decry gatekeeping, and debate who gets to define terms like "fangirl". It's a great conversation and further proof that it is, in fact, possible to have a reasonable discussion of a difficult topic and still remain calm and friendly.

It's time to talk about companions again! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina (as opposed to Katarina--yes, we have some confusion there), and Lynne as we discuss companions who joined the Doctor from the past, the future, and other worlds. How do past companions stack up to those from the future? Does one type work better than the other? What about "alien" companions? How about robots? Do robots count? (They so totally do!)

Listen in as we compare Victoria's and Zoe's relationships to Jamie, ponder over whether Leela fits better as a past or future companion, disagree about which Doctor Adric works best with, and squee about Nyssa. All this and more...enjoy!
