This week's topic is one we've touched on a bit, but we thought it deserved its own episode. Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we talk about companions who were also soldiers (or soldierey or soldier-adjacent). Naturally, there's a lot of UNIT talk, but there are more soldier-companions than you might think.

What do you think of the military companions? And how do you feel about the Doctor's ever-evolving reaction to soldiers? Let us know in the comments!

Also covered [links on our site]:

As promised, we weren't quite finished covering Red Nose Day shenanigans! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Tansy as we discuss the longest, most involved, and most important(?) Comic Relief special of them all, "The Curse of Fatal Death". What did we each think of Mr. Moffat's first turn at writing televised Doctor Who? And what was it like seeing it for the first time back when we thought there was no more Doctor Who on TV ever?

What about you? Did you see this sketch back when it debuted? If so, have your views on it changed over the years? If not, what did you think seeing it out of context? Let us know in the comments!

If you're reading this the day it drops, the US is having its very first Red Nose Day tomorrow! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we explain just what that means and why it relates to Doctor Who. (If you live in the UK, that part may be a bit obvious.) We chat (and disagree--of course) about each of the Red Nose Day sketches that are (sometimes only just barely) related to the Doctor and his universe [inks on our site]:

    2007 - Catherine Tate & David Tennant

2009 - SJA: From Raxacoricofallapatorius With Love

2011 - Space, Part One and Time, Part Two

    13 May 2015 (11:30am GMT)
Episode Duration: 1 hour, 10 minutes and 10 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

Yes, we assure you this really is episode 74. Pay no attention to the wildly inaccurate introduction claiming we've gotten further than we have. This is what happens when Deb leaves us alone. Join Erika, Liz, and Tansy as we try to cope without our moderating maven. And what are we discussing? We stick to our 2015 theme of companions, but we take it in a different direction this week. We're talking about the companions of a different Time Lord. Yep, from Delgado to Gomez, we're covering the Master's (Missy's) companions! Why does the Master always seem to have lackeys assisting him? We discover the Master's reasons for picking up strays aren't always that different from the Doctor's, though his methods of acquiring these "helpers" is usually quite different.

What do you think of the Master's companions? Let us know in the comments!

Time for another silly bit of fun for the Verities! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we delve into Doctor Who: Who-ology, a book of Doctor Who miscellany by Cavan Scott and Mark Wright. Deb puts us through our paces with a bunch of DW questions that are tricksy as can be.

Episode Duration: 1 hour, 27 minutes and 3 seconds

We thought this provided some nice symmetry with our episode about companion arrivals. Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we talk about how companions leave the TARDIS. Many are forced out, some choose to leave, a few even die. We have some definite favorites and some just-as-definite least favorites. Also, Deb objectifies hair and Lynne wants to spray King Yrcanos with a spray bottle. It's lots of good fun!

What's your favorite/least-favorite way to see a companion take their leave of the Doctor? Which stories do you love, and which don't hold water? Let us know in the comments!

Episode Duration: 37 minutes and 24 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

For this week we had the opportunity to talk to the delightful Sophie Aldred, and we couldn't make you wait for that--especially because her Kickstarter for Strangeness in Space still has a few days to go. Do check it out if you're a fan of sci-fi, comedy, and/or audio goodness! She chats to Deb about that fantastic project, her time as Ace (both on screen and in Big Finish), and what it's like attending conventions and interacting with fans. It's a wonderful conversation, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we have!

No, that title doesn't mean we're fighting amongst ourselves (though it's true we're not in total agreement about this week's topic). Join Deb, Erika, Liz, Lynne, and Tansy as we talk about Richard Marson's new biography of Verity Lambert, Drama and Delight: The Life of Verity Lambert. Verity did an awful lot more than just launching Doctor Who. Her successes ranged from television to cooking to friendship. We chat about it all and discuss whether we thought the book succeeds as a biography.

...Or as Deb so aptly put it on the Verity! spreadsheet: "Hey you! What are you doing in my TARDIS?" Join Erika, Deb, Liz, and Lynne as we talk about how the companions end up with the Doctor in the first place. There are lots of different ways and reasons folks end up aboard the TARDIS. It's April Fools' Day, so we thought we'd bring you something a bit lighter than usual. Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we discuss the totally-canonical (according to some) PR1ME computer ads Tom Baker and Lalla Ward did in the early 80s. Wait. I should be clearer--Tom and Lalla did these Australian commercials AS the Doctor and Romana. And they are a glorious thing to behold. If you haven't already seen them, do yourself a favor!

So what do you think of these commercials? Totally canon? Or just totally fun?

    25 February 2015 (12:30pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 1 hour, 8 minutes and 11 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

This week we focus on one companion--the winner of our Verity! companions poll! Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Lynne, as we talk about Ace! Our personal feelings about Ace as a companion are mixed, but we all agree (mostly) on her importance as a companion. It's pretty easy to draw a line between Ace and Rose, and we do just that! We also chat a lot about Ace: as compared to other women on screen at the time, as a character to identify with (or not), and as a tuxedo-wearer.

What are your feelings about Ace? Do you love her attitude? Or does she put you off as a viewer? Or something in between? Let us know in the comments!

Ok, it's finally time to talk about "proper" companions (whatever that means). Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we talk about the companions that started (and re-started) it all. We're focusing on Susan, Grace, and Rose--the ladies who ushered in each "era" of Doctor Who. We find more parallels than you might expect (certainly more than some of us expected!).

What do you think of these "first" companions? Let us know in the comments!

That's right! We're back with another edition of In Defence Of! (And yes, now that I live in Canada, I've started spelling it with a "c". Sometimes.) Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we try (oh golly do we try) to defend the topics and concepts our dear sweet CRUEL listeners have suggested. "Dimensions in Time"? The eyebrow agenda? The Dalek episodes with the pig people? And even more! This wasn't easy, but it sure as heck was fun!

  • Ep 66 - Companions Who Never Were

    14 January 2015 (12:30pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 1 hour, 16 minutes and 10 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

Our year of companions kicks off in delightful style! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Tansy as we discuss those Doctor Who characters who were almost companions--those who were slated to become TARDIS travelers but never did, as well as those who we wish had stuck around. Deb accidentally invents a new word*. Kat is thoroughly predictable. Erika unabashedly cheats. And Tansy has a list!

Which guest stars do you wish had become full-time companions? Let us know in the comments!

*comfanion, noun; a Doctor Who character not generally considered a companion of the Doctor, but whom a viewer loves so much, they think should have been. The viewer may even argue against popular opinion, claiming their favorite *is* a companion. (Examples: "Bret Vyon is my favorite companion." "He was only in one story! He's a comfanion, at best." -- "Sally Sparrow is my favorite comfanion. I wish the Doctor would've invited her onto the TARDIS.")

Also covered [links on our site]:

    • Erika appreciates Paul Cornell's 11th Blog of Christmas!
    • Kat receives a teeny tiny sonic screwdriver book! (book not sold separately)
    • Tansy is an emotional wreck after reaching the end of Hex's Big Finish run.
    • Deb
      • Looks forward to new Big Finish audios featuring Bernice Summerfield and Sutekh!
      • Enjoys Matthew Stott's interview with unofficial fifth-Verity Una McCormack!

It's mostly Christmas cheer all up in here, so if you're looking for a good rant, you're (mostly) in the wrong place. We talk Capaldi, Clara, Danny, Santa, and more!

What did you think of this year's Christmas outing? Was it Santastic? Or ho-ho-horrible? Let us know in the comments!

    Direct Podcast Download

This week sees the last entry in our year of villains. Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Lynne as we chat about one of the most interesting villains of them all. Who could it be? Why, it's the Doctor himself! There are more than a few times our beloved "hero" does things that are far less-than-heroic. We talk about a number of examples, why they are (or aren't) really villainous, and even slide into a conversation about the nature of evil! Deep stuff. Sorta.
