PODCAST 027 - Andrew Smith
Diddly Dum PodcastThe Three Who Drool enter the New Year by inviting Andrew Smith into The Diddly Dum Whoseum. Originally famous as the teenage writer of Fourth Doctor story “Full Circle”, Andrew is once more writing Doctor Who and Blakes Seven plays for Big Finish.
The exhibits presented by Andrew to The Whoseum are the Radio Times Doctor Who Tenth Anniversary Special and Toby Hadoke’s “Who’s Round” podcast series. They provoke lots of chat.
Along the way, conversation turns inter alia to Police Box keys, how Norman Wisdom has informed The Rev’s image of the Police, dinosaurs at Crystal Palace and the UK’s first crematorium.
Please take the time to read about a charity Andrew is interested in, The Lily Foundation, which gives support to children and families facing the challenges of Mitochondrial Disease, and support them if you can. www.thelilyfoundation.org.uk @4lilyfoundation

The podcast ends with a tribute to our Whoseum guest in the form of a Blockbusters Gold Run. If you’d like to follow along with Al and The Rev as they attempt to go from Gold to Gold before the two of them lose interest, here’s a screenshot of the Gold Run screen.
SHOWNOTES
Fresh from attending the vile debauch which was Toby Hadoke’s birthday bash, this week’s special guest at The Diddly Dum Whoseum is Andrew Smith, the man who in his late teens wrote the Fourth Doctor story “Full Circle” which introduced the companion Adric. Andrew then took up a career in the Police – the Diddly Dumbers like to imagine him as a cross between Jack Regan and Inspector Morse with a long scarf. In recent years and since his recent retirement from guarding us while we booze, new works which have come from Andrew’s pen include the Big Finish audio plays “The Invasion of E-Space” (Lalla Ward), “Domain of the Voord” (William Russell & Carole Ann Ford) and “The First Sontarans” (Sixth Doctor) and the to-be-released-this-January “Mistfall” (Fifth Doctor). Andrew has also written for Big Finish’s Blake’s Seven audio plays including “Retribution” (The Liberator Chronicles, Vol 10) and “Escape From Destiny” (The Liberator Chronicles, Vol 11). Also to be released this January is a BBC audiobook of “Full Circle” read by Matthew Waterhouse.
Please take the time to read about a charity Andrew is interested in, The Lily Foundation, which gives support to children and families facing the challenges of Mitochondrial Disease, and support them if you can. www.thelilyfoundation.org.uk @4lilyfoundation
The first exhibit presented to The Whoseum by Andrew is The Radio Times Doctor Who Tenth Anniversary Special from 1973. Among the delights contained within this 68-page treasure were a new short story, “We are the Daleks!”, by Terry Nation, double-page spreads on each season, detailed plans for constructing a life-size Dalek and behind-the-scenes profiles. This 1973 Special famously inspired a 15 year old Peter Capaldi to write to Radio Times. Scans of many of the pages can be found here on the sfaction Tumbler page. A video clip of the pages can be found here on Youtube.
The Quarks were the robot servants of The Dominators in the Second Doctor story of that name.
The real Police Box on which the TARDIS is based has an interesting history. In 2002, The Metropolitan Police (London’s Police Force) unsuccessfully tried to sue the BBC for the trade mark rights to the design. The full case details can be found here. A map of the former locations of Police Boxes can be found here.
The Rev (and, to be fair, all decent and law abiding British citizens) gain our idea of how our Police Forces work entirely from films such as “Carry on Constable” (1960) and “The Belles of St Trinians” (1954) and “Norman on the Beat” (1962) and “Spare a Copper” (1942).
The Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, also known as Dinosaur Court, are a series of sculptures of extinct animals (including dinosaurs) in Crystal Palace Park. Commissioned in 1852 to accompany the Crystal Palace after its move from the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, they were the first dinosaur sculptures in the world. They were used as a backdrop for Carole Ann Ford’s photoshoot for The Radio Times Doctor Who Tenth Anniversary Special.
The Steepletone Blue Police Telephone Box.
Opened in 1901, the Hedon Road crematorium and chapel are thought to be the oldest municipal buildings in the country.
The second exhibit presented to The Whoseum by Andrew is Toby Hadoke’s “Who’s Round” series of podcasts. This series follows Toby’s quest to mark Doctor Whos’s 50th anniversary year by interviewing someone who had worked on every Doctor Who story. Notable interviews include Andrew “for it is he” Smith (#02), Waris Hussein (#06), Russell T Davies (#50 & #54 & #59 & #99), Uncle Terrance Dicks (#55), Richard Martin (#80), Lynda Belingham (#71 & #85), a Rev-pleasing Chris Jury (#86), Frazer Hines (#91), Mark Gatiss (#98) and Steven Moffat (#100).

Big Blue Box Podcast - Episode 24
The Doctor Who Big Blue Box PodcastOur first show in 2015 and we kick off with landing the Tardis quite smoothly for a change to bring you the latest Doctor Who news then go straight in with our review of this much praised classic - The Web of Fear, but did it give us chills?
[powerpress]
The News
Sadly to start with, television director Fiona Cumming has sadly passed away aged 77. Fiona has been in the industry for many years and was a popular director around the Troughton era through to Davison's, putting her name to over 34 episodes. A sad occasion but good memories from some of those amazing stories.
John Hurt, the War Doctor himself, has been knighted. Yes, the veteran actor who portrayed the almost given up War Doctor in the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor is now a Sir! Well done indeed.
Filming kicked off on Monday 5th Jan in Cardiff for Series 9. Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman were back in the thick of it and starting recording block A. As we know Jenna decided at the last minute to stay on for series 9's entirety so we think and dream of all the adventures that await.
2015 marks the 10 year anniversary of the show's return to our screens when Chris Eccleston and Billie Piper changed the show forever. As a celebration we will be holding a competition nearer the time (March/April) with some cool goodies up for grabs. We'll reveal more as we get closer so stay tuned to find out how you can win.
"The Web of Fear" Review
We travel way back to the years of black and white to review this recently found classic story. Generally reviews very well did we agree with the general opinion or was there more to this story that made us think otherwise? Did the Yeti's scare enough? Was Jamie and Victoria worthy of companion applaud? Did Troughton give us his usual brilliance? All these and more in our retro-review.
Thank you for kicking off 2105 with us inside the Big Blue Box. We'd love to hear your thoughts on The Web of Fear so let us know in the comments below or on Twitter and Facebook. Until next time - Allons-y!!!

#32 - Last Christmas
Who's OnAre we awake or dreaming? Is there really a difference? Why does that roofer look like Santa Clause? Join us to see if we can find the answers in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, “Last Christmas”!
We ran into some scheduling (and weather) difficulties for getting this episode recorded in our usual manner so we decided to try something new! We used some open source software solutions (more than we usually do for the production of the show) to run a Skype-like three-way video call. Skype didn’t allow Rob to join a video conference call from his GNU/Linux machine so we had to use Rob’s XMPP server and accounts for the Who’s On guys to log into Jitsi and create a three-way pier-to-pier video conference call. The call quality was quite competitive to Skype and it was completely painless across Windows and Ubuntu MATE. If you’re interested in checking out the software used for this solution you can read about XMPP at www.XMPP.org and you can find Jitsi at www.Jitsi.org.

Episode 103 : The War Machines
The Untempered Schism PodcastThe First Doctor takes a visit to (what was then) present day London, to visit the new Post Office Tower only to find it home to a mad AI with delusions of world conquest. Though the machine isn't going it alone, it has a bevy of mind controlled servants to build robots to take over London. Of course the Doctor has his own allies, even if there is an unconventional switch in his companions.

TDP 442: Big Finish Main Range 193 - Masters of Earth
Tin Dog Podcast@BigFinish #DoctorWho #Mastersofearth #TinDogPodcast The year is 2163. Ten years since the Daleks invaded the Earth. One year until the Doctor, in his first incarnation, will help bring the occupation to an end. But for now, their reign of terror goes on. The TARDIS brings the Doctor and Peri to Scotland – enslaved, like everywhere else on the planet. But there are rumours of Dalek-free islands off its coast. Places where resistors and refuseniks are coming together, gathering arms and armour, preparing to strike back against the enemy. When the Doctor falls in with an unlikely group of freedom fighters making that dangerous journey to Orkney, he finds himself trapped – but not only by the Daleks, their robotised henchmen and their human collaborators. By history. Because history shows that for another year, resistance is useless... The rebellion must fail – and as a Time Lord, the Doctor can do nothing to help Written By: Mark Wright and Cavan ScottDirected By: Nicholas Briggs Cast Colin Baker (The Doctor), Nicola Bryant (Peri), Tracy Wiles (Moira Brody), Brian McCardie (Alan Weir), Sean Biggerstaff (Ross Nicolson), Hugh Ross (Kyle Inskip),Damian Lynch (Curbishly), Nicholas Briggs (The Daleks/Roboman) 193.
