We're back... all proper like! In this episode... Series 9 is less than a week away, so what are our expectations? Can it possibly be better than its pretty stellar predecessor? We go in-depth on the stories we know something about a skirt gracefully around the ones we don't (which is most). Plus we leak some confidential text messages, an exciting announcement regarding The Twin Dilemma, and there's even an easter egg of sorts at the very end!* Joining Jono Park are Zeus Pod stalwarts Paul Scoones & Peter Adamson. *In a 'TARDIS Cam / it's not that great' kind of way

Well, Todd's enthusiastic, Brendan's cheerful and Nathan just wishes there was a Sontaran involved. We're off to the Duchy of San Martino in Wales, where cliched but gorgeously-designed things are afoot in The Masque of Mandragora.

    Watch the show

The Masque of Mandragora was released on DVD in 2010. (Amazon US) (Amazon UK)

    Notes and links

Famously, the location work for this story was done in Portmeirion in Wales, which is a tourist thing built last century in the style of an Italian village. It's probably most famous as the location of Patrick McGoohan's cult classic The Prisoner (1967). Which is really, really worth watching. You can book your stay in one of Portmeirion's self-catering villas here, but watch out for bouncing weather ballons.

The BBC Television Shakespeare ran from 1978 to 1984 and included adaptations of all of Shakespeare's plays. Yes, even Pericles, Prince of Tyre. It was almost completely studio-bound, with sets much like those created by Barry Newbery for Masque. The Wikipedia article is exhaustingly detailed.

Quentin Crisp was a famous twentieth-century English homosexualist and author, made famous by (among other things) his portrayal by Doctor Who's very own John Hurt in The Naked Civil Servant (1975), a TV movie adaptation of his biography, produced by Verity Lambert. Fancy!

    Episode 55: Vampire Science

The Doctor Who Book Club Podcast

    Direct Podcast Download

    21:33 (GMT) - 11 Sep 2015

After a month-long hiatus, we have returned with a discussion of Jonathan Blum and Kate Orman's Vampire Science, the second in the BBC series featuring the Eighth Doctor and Sam. From the back cover:

In the days when the Time Lords were young, their war with the Vampires cost trillions of lives on countless worlds. Now the Vampires have been sighted again, in San Francisco.

Some want to coexist with humans, using genetic engineering in a macabre experiment to find a new source of blood. But some would rather go out in a blaze of glory - and UNIT's attempts to contain them could provoke another devestating war.

The Doctor strikes a dangerous bargain, but even he might not be able to keep the city from getting caught in the crossfire. While he finds himself caught in a web of old feuds and high-tech scheme, his new companion Sam finds out just how deadly traveling with the Doctor can be.

Kate Orman wrote the Virgin New Adventure The Room with No Doors (for which her co-author and future husband Jonathan Blum was a contributor), and that's a tough act to follow based on our review.

Without further ado, sit back, relax, pour yourself a glass of synthetic blood, and listen in as we talk about Vampire Science.

Just over a week till Doctor Who returns as I type this but just enough time for a taster of this year's Whooverville convention. As ever Stephen Hatcher and his team put together a fine event, this time with even more dealers than before so I can home with quite a few target books for the shelf. But as ever there was room for podcasters to talk to the guests I was joined by Jean of The Staggering Stories podcast to talk to Richard Marson(TV Producer and writer of The Life & Scandalous Times of JNT and Drama & Delight: The Life of Verity Lambert), Nicholas Pegg(Dalek Actor), and David Benson(Actor in Dr Who: Robot of Sherwood and Big Finish's Iris Wildthyme series) with David Benson having recently played London Mayor Boris Johnson the conversion drifted from the BBC to Politics which certainly all three guests had a take on.

Also this week almost while we weren't looking another trailer was released to promote Dr Who Series 9.

You can watch video of this panel here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4JDuJN4YM4

and my photos of Whooverville 7 are here https://www.flickr.com/photos/tdrury/albums/72157658209772545

As ever Stephen Hatcher and his team put together a fine event, this time with even more dealers than before so I can home with quite a few target books for the shelf. But as ever there was room for podcasters to talk to the guests I was joined by Jean of The Staggering Stories podcast to talk to Richard Marson(TV Producer and writer of The Life & Scandalous Times of JNT and Drama & Delight: The Life of Verity Lambert), Nicholas Pegg(Dalek Actor), and David Benson(Actor in Dr Who: Robot of Sherwood and Big Finish’s Iris Wildthyme series) with David Benson having recently played London Mayor Boris Johnson the conversion drifted from the BBC to Politics which certainly all three guests had a take on.

Also this week almost while we weren’t looking another trailer was released to promote Dr Who Series 9.

Howdy Who fans! We have some cool news to go through then we’re back to Gallifrey for this week’s classic story review.

    The News

The UK now has a confirmed start time for the series 9 opener on the 19th September – 7:40pm. Make a note and don’t be late!

More Torchwood audio is on the way from Big Finish. This time Eve Myles and Kai Owen return to continue their adventures. Hopefully a complete Torchwood cast audio is on the way.

There have been a couple of extra guests added to the Doctor Who Festival in November. Regular writer Mark Gatiss and Big Finish maestro Nicholas Briggs will be there. There will also be photo opportunities.

The BBC, as part of the ongoing Male it Digital campaign, are launching a new game creator on the 15th September. They will provide the assets and tutorials to get you going then your creativity is your only limitation! We love that the BBC is encouraging creativity in the Who fandom and can’t wait to see what you guys come up with.

    “The Deadly Assassin” Review

After a precognitive vision we’re back on Gallifrey for a classic Tom Baker story. Companionless The Doctor has been framed by The Master so it’s all going on. Does this often liked story get us rooting for the Doctor or does it leave us wandering around the Matrix?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – Which story did Roger Delgado’s wife provide her voice? The answer is – Planet of the Spiders.

This week’s question is – On what planet are Voltrox found? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

It’s been great going through this week’s Who stuff with you and we’re getting more excited as series 9 draws closer. Remember to give us your thoughts on next week’s review episode – David Tennant’s Planet of the Ood. Have a great week and remember – Allons-y!

IT'S ALIVE! Galvanizing lightning has struck, the stars have aligned, the hecatomb of Daleks sacrificed, and despite recording with a bit of a scratchy-and-sore throat, a new episode is now in the can! It's debatable if it is a 'proper' episode, I suppose, as the format is a bit different from usual, so I've decided to just call it a 'mini-episode' (though admittedly, its not very short or anything). I'm just now trying to get back on the horse and rework the recording schedule going forward, since so much has happened between this episode and the last one. SO MUCH!

Either way, I'm back now, giving this another go, with a chat about the 10th Anniversary of the new series and a look back at the episode that started it all, 'Rose'. I also have some new station idents from Andrew Cartmel and Sylvester McCoy to debut as a little bonus, because, well, they make me super-happy!

Anyway, many, many apologies for the extraordinarily long wait, but also many thank-yous to those who've been listening all this time and cheering me on to return to my podcast again. Join me on this episode as I chat about ten years of the new series of Doctor Who and also the episode Rose, the latter of which I'm not very nice about, to be honest, so you've been warned!

And, as always, glad to have you aboard. Enjoy the ride!

First: EXCITING NEWS! Doctor Whooch will be weekly through the end of Series 9, and that's going to be a thing.

Now: as we count down to the premiere of Series 9, we're revisiting the first episode of Series 8: Deep Breath. And guess what. We have Moffat opinions. Also, we search for The Master slash fic (but generally forget to finish that quest), find out that we're not good with boats, and Danica swears at the cats and generally can't say words or names.

And hey, tune in next week for what's essentially the second part of this episode - and then it's straight on to NEW WHO. YESSSSSS.

Has it been two weeks already? Did you doubt we'd come back? Never fear, we wouldn't do that to you again so soon! And we still have so much Doctor Who to talk about from over the summer. We weren't just reading books and comics, there audios! Soooooo many audios! This week, three musketeers Josh, Ashley, and Jeff try to wade through just a little bit of what they listened to over the summer. And barely make a dent in the list. However, the do manage to listen to some of the best of Big Finish... and the worst. First up is New Adventure adaptation Damaged Goods, by Russell T himself, adapted by Jonathan Morris. Spoilers: It's really good. Then we join Ms. Bernice Summerfield as she, the Doctor and Ace try to fight against The Triumph of Sutekh! Back on our retro review list, we have Three's a Crowd by Colin Brake, and Catch 1782 by Alison Lawson. These reviews do not go well. Neither does the news for that matter, as Josh is missing something very important to him! The Oncoming Storm... This time, we don't have delivered Doctor Who books even though Amazon says they were! The Postman is gonna hear about this...
