MUTTER'S SPIRAL Podcast this week addresses "The Lie of the Land", the finale to the Monks trilogy, written by Toby Whithouse and directed by Wayne Yip. We were both less than enthused by this episode individually as well as in its role as the culmination of the three-part story. We will go in depth about what didn't work at all for us (as well as some stuff we did like - Missy, Bill's Mom). John also makes some good points about how and why the trilogy doesn't hold together for him (nor me). I lament the loss of the early-season momentum and express my dislike of the Monks in general as foes for the Doctor. There's also trivia, of course!

So this is what it has come to, the eaters of light have to die.

This week we decided to walk across a nice little moor in Scotland. We watched as someone just out of view got struck by lightning. It was really weird, there weren’t even clouds in the sky. We ran over and told us a story, the story of Helicon Prime, relayed to him by Jake Elliott. Apparently the story was first told in November of 2007. Helicon Prime can be purchased for $8 (or your local equivalent) on Big Finish's website.

    Show-notes:

This week, we look at a medium where Colin's reputation as the Doctor is second to none. To that end, Nathan is only pretending to be evil, Brendan has two peglegs, Todd is having a hard time assembling some shelving, and Richard is just a shadow of his former self. It's Colin Baker, in the Big Finish audio adventures!

    Buy the stories!

The stories we discuss this week are all available for download from the Big Finish website.

    • Jubilee, by Rob Shearman.
    • Doctor Who and the Pirates, by Jacqueline Rayner.
    • The One Doctor, by Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman.
    • The Brink of Death, by Nicholas Briggs, the final story in The Last Adventure box set.
    Notes and links Jubilee

Rob Shearman has written a number of Big Finish audios, and some books, including Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical and Everyone's Just So Special. These are all available from his page on the Big Finish website.

Fans of upsetting and occasionally funny near-future dystopias will enjoy Black Mirror, which is available on Netflix.

As usual, Philip Sandifer has an insighful take on this story, which Nathan is impressed by. Shearman himself comments on the article.

If you're in the mood for a much more harrowing patriarchal dystopia, Hulu has recently made a brilliant TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.

    Doctor Who and the Pirates

This story was written by Jac Rayner, who has written a number of Doctor Who plays and novels. She also maintains a blog.

    The One Doctor

Richard and Nathan both remember watching The Maths Show in primary school, which occasional featured a segment called Doctor Where, in which the Doctor and Sally-Anne explained concepts like scale and probability.

The hapless Fry drinks the emperor of the planet Trisol in the Futurama episode My Three Suns.

    The Brink of Death

Michael Jayston starred in a dramatisation of Geoffrey Household's 1939 novel, Rogue Male, in which a British ex-serviceman travels to Europe to assassinate the unnamed dictator of a major power. (Oh, okay, it's probably Hitler.)

The Third Doctor, currently still exiled to Earth, has to play ‘messenger’ for the Time Lords and deliver a ‘box’ containing something to someone on or around the planet of Solos – on the day they are just about to achieve independence from the Overlords of the Earth Empire in the 30th Century. Of course things don’t go as planned, with the Marshall of the Skybase staging a military coup, Jo getting kidnapped, and the planet’s population slowly turning into bug-like monsters.

@TinDogPodcast reviews THE HAUNTING OF MALKIN PLACE Whilst on the way to visit the birthplace of MR James, a chance encounter with a spiritualist on a train sends the Doctor and Romana on the trail of a ghost. It's the most convincing case of haunting he's ever heard of, he tells them. And so, on their arrival, does it appear to be. Things go bump in the night at Malkin Place. The voice of a crying child. Birds bursting into flight. Strange movements in a seance. The Doctor is determined there must be a rational explanation. But is science always the answer to everything? Written By: Phil Mulryne Directed By: Nicholas Briggs Cast Tom Baker (The Doctor), Lalla Ward (Romana), Simon Jones (Talbot), Denise Black (Mrs Mountford), Gunnar Cauthery(Maurice), Fiona Sheehan (Beatrice), Rikki Lawton (Tom), Phil Mulryne (Jack). It's a fun little Christmas special that really has nothing to do with Christmas - just a bunch of brain stealing aliens without pockets planning an invasion...with blue snot. Hey Who fans! The usual Who news, some merch from our friend Dalek Tat plus our review of The Pyramid at the End of the World.

    The News

Rachel Talalay (of Heaven Sent/Hell Bent etc) is to direct this year’s Christmas Special episode which would also be The Moff and Capaldi’s last outings and we we talk through the viewing figures for Extremis.

    Merch Corner

The guys at Fantom have released a new classic commentary – Who Talk- for The Green Death featuring Katie Manning, Richard Franklin and John Levene amongst others and the BBC Store is closing its doors on the 1st November this year.

“The Pyramid at the End of the World” Review

We’re into part two of the (not so) loosely linked “Monks Trilogy” and the fate of the human race is not looking good. Are we up for this one or are we left with neither love nor consent?

Thank you as always for sticking with us and supporting the show, your continued listenership and community spirit is awesome. We love you all! Next week it’s The Lie of the Land so get your thoughts in for that. Until then have a great week and remember – Allons-y!

So it's finally here. The bicentennial. The Big 2-0-0. The Oncoming Storm celebrates 200 episodes of Doctor Who books, audios, and comics by acknowledging that they won't get to talk about all of the best non televised adventures of the Doctor before they wrap up, so it's time for a list! Josh, Ashley, Jeff, and Rachel have come to the table with a list of their top five favorite Doctor Who spin off media that won't be covered by the show, and they're gonna tell you why they're worthy of being the best of what's left! At least, that was the idea. It's not long before everyone is cheating and expanding their lists to cover whole swathes of material. But when you have 50 plus years to cover, it's hard to keep it to a top five! Rounding out the episode, we present our special 200th episode panel from Wholanta 2017. It quickly goes off the rails and becomes a Who spin off media 101 panel, but we wanted to include it as a thank you for all of the fine people who woke up on a Sunday morning to come spend time with us! The Oncoming Storm... This time, we've got no arguments or infighting, and complement each other's picks! You'd think we gotten somewhat professional after 200 episodes or something.

On this week's show, Danica and Brandon are thrown into the deep end of Moffatisms as they try to swim through "The Pyramid At The End Of The World". It doesn't go well. They also get into Moffat really only using his own stuff unless an old bit of Who slots in, seemingly so he can take all the credit and be the best boy. Is that too harsh? Whatever. You love it.
